lipscombe and Meanringo...Spot on. The fact that these activities are illegal will have virtually no impact on the folks doing it, or the police. In fact, a J-person could probably crash into a koban while holding an umbrella, listening to an i-Pod, and speaking on a mobile phone, at the same time, and not face any punishment. The cops are too busy checking the ID numbers on all our bikes to care about this petty stuff.

Have any of these teams won any tournaments outside of Japan? I was under the impression that teams from the U.S., Brazil, and elsewhere dominated the pro circuit. But, I will concede, most of them have nice "hips". And it is also refreshing to see J-women with a nice, healthy tan, rather than that god-awful white, pasty skin.

Change the caption, and this could pass for a picture from North Korea or China. In fact, at first glance, that is what I thought it was -- gals hired as guides for the upcoming Olympics.

whatever11...You can't have watched much of Jack Cafferty if you have not seen him lay into: Bush for the debacle in Irag; Cheney for being Cheney; various U.S. governmental bodies like the FDA; or the U.S. Congress. I can recall him doing almost all of the above in just the past month. Along with snide remarks about all the major presidential candidates. As mtt says, he is sarcastic, in a positive way, not mean.

rjd_jr...Glad we disagree again -- because you totally miss the point here. I happened to see this segment as I was getting dressed for work. First off, Jack cafferty is NOT a news person, per se. He is on CNN to voice opinions. He is there to say things like this to make people think, and not just get spoon-fed politically correct pablum, like all J-news programs. He is supposed to be controversial. And, he attacks American politicians just as bluntly. Second, as noted, he was NOT speaking about the Chinese people, but their leaders. And, respectfully, he is right in his characterization. They are "goons and thugs". Just as assuredly as the J-leaders are dullards and weaklings. I completely agree with the other posters. Just too bad that Bush is so beholding to the Chinese that he can't be as blunt.

To paraphrase numerous posters of late -- "What kinds of low-lifes and sickos are they letting into the JSDF these days?" Or, "they must be really scraping the bottom of the barrel for recruits". Or, "keep them all on their bases so they cannot threaten the safety of young Japanese women." But, those rants were only about U.S. servicemen -- when they went astray. It's different when it's a 25 year-old Japanese military guy preying on and threatening a 12 year-old girl -- right? Then he's just one bad apple, not representative of the whole group. It must be, because this incident took place over 6 months ago, and is just now coming to light.

rjd_jr...This makes two days in a row that I actually agree with you. Child-abuse/neglect is not in any way limited to Japan. Nor would I agree with people who imply that it is worse here than in other countries. Selfish and/or immature parents are a problem in most countries. This is a tragic incident, and agree with your sentiment that we should just let this poor boy rest in peace, and not use his death as a basis for a Japan-bash.
Moderator: Readers, please stay on topic. References to other countries are not relevant to this discussion.

rjd_jr...interseting or sad? I saw part of an interview with Jackie Chan on CNN this morning, and his defense of China was pathetic. Just a bunch of platitudes like "Human rights is a global problem. Why just single out China?" I understand these folks natural pride in their homeland. Most people who immigrate to the U.S. still maintain a measure of pride in the country their family came from. And, the Olympics were supposed to be China's big "Coming Out Party". And, now their parade, or relay, is getting rained on. But, even the head of the IOC said yesterday that China had failed miserably in their commitment to improve human rights. To which China promptly responded by telling him to mind his own business. Maybe it is easy for these folks to want to be proud of China, now that they no longer have to live there. Personally, I'd love to see some Japanese people peacefully protest in Nagano. It would be refreshing to know that some folks here actually care about the plight of people in Tibet or Darfur.

rjd_jr...does reality have any place in any of your postings? Contrary to your predictably defensive post of Japan, the fact is that almost all major TV stations in the U.S., both national and local, require their weather people to have the seal from the American Metereoligical Society. Now, as you say, this may not require a Phd or a Pulitzer Prize, but it does at least require the person to have studied the field. As opposed to Japan, where all it requires is the ability to look kawaii. This gal wouldn't get a job as an intern in most news departments in the states.

rjd_jr and smartacus ...are those your standard lines whenever a picture of an attractive Japanese woman appears on JT? "She rocks"..."She's a real hottie". How original. Makes me believe neither of you have been closer to this kind of woman than these pictures. No question, she is very attractive, but bangs have never turned me on.

Disiderata1967 ... Is your comment about porn relieving the stress "when you are married to a partner who has given up their sex life for whatever reasons!" based on personal experience? I hope not. But, from someone who has been there and done that -- and got divorced as a result -- I say "Amen to that." Besides, how hard core can this have been if they were filming in Mcdonald's? No mention of animals or anything in the police report, and just two "cast members". Probably see the same on Sopranos.

gmygmygmy... "So stupid!". I can only presume you are speaking about the majority of your posts regarding this subject. The Chinese government represents the antithesis of the spirit of the Olympics. The fact that some people, who live in truly free countries, like the U.K., France, and the U.S., are choosing to use their rights to point out China's hypocracy is NOT stupid. It is freedom of thought and expression -- so long as it is peaceful. Were the thousands of pro-China demonstrators in San Francisco also "stupid"? Or does that knife only cut one way?

I have often commented that I think mothers of young children in Tokyo, or the other major Japanese cities, are amazing. These cities are hardly "mother-friendly", particularly as it applies to mass transportation. Many older stations/train lines lack elevators, or even escalators. So, you often see these ladies trying to lug a child, or two, up the stairs along with the baby buggy. (Yes, I do often offer assistance.) And, the trains are crowded, leaving little room for them. And, the tiny/non-existent sidewalks make their negotiating through with the buggy a constant challenge. My hats are off to them. No wonder more women don't want to have kids. I just wish more of them would put helmets on the children when they have them on bicycles.

eastokyo...very funny. Glad you said it, and not me. I'd be classified as just being "racist", but you can get away with it. One question though. If the event is held to "pray for protection against STD's" wouldn't it be better if the large pink unit had a condom on? I think most folks agree those are more effective than praying.

rjd_jr -- Apparently you like the Barbie-doll -- pardon me, Licca doll --look. Personally, I'll pass. I mean, seriously, look closely at the picture -- they look like dolls, not real women. (They even have their arms/hands posed identically.) If the caption wasn't there, I bet a lot of people would look and think that it is a picture of two new Licca dolls. They look like they would break if you got too "physical", so to speak. Purely a nice arm-accessory.

VoXman...Completely incorrect. Most of Harvard is made up of "regular Joes" in fact. If you knew anything about Harvard, you'd know that it has one of the world's largest endowments, and uses this money to provide financial aid to students of modest means. I believe around 50% of the students are on some form of student aid. Sorry to burst your steroetyped bubble.
