Agree with the consensus that the dog make-up comment is pretty amazing, but, I have to give her kudos for her "I like tanned skin color" quote. I get so tired of seeing the women here in the middle of summer with long black sleeves, gloves, and hiding under an umbrella. Give me a bronzed goddess anytime.

Is Tanihara-san going to work harvesting rice? Who tucks dress slacks into boots like that? Obviously some PR guy trying way too hard to put as much leather on him as possible.

meanmutha...agree. Saw an ad the other day for a new condo development, and the headline was: "Beyond The Premium". Premium has become a noun here.

An "unreported demonstration"? Why do you have to report a demonstration to the police? Aren't they smart enough to discover it for themselves? Or are they so incompetent that they could miss guys with flags and loud speakers?

"Police believe he tried to conceal the fact that he is married"...No, do you think? Wow, what could have possibly led them to that conclusion? Brilliant.

Maybe the worst they've ever looked. Not aging well -- for sure. As Bogi said, give me Aya Sugimoto anytime/any day.

smartacus...Simple, you simply close that box off in your mind, and get on with your life. Taking the attitude that things happen for a reason also helps. As does being arrogant enough to assume that it was her loss for not being smart enough to pursue the opportunity. Finally, don't revisit any places that make you think of her if possible.

Sarge...Like your candidates, you seem to have a tendency to mis-state the facts. Obama's latest lead in the CNN "Pole of Poles" is at least 5 percent, not one. And, he leads in almost very battle ground state. (The two exceptions being West Virginia and one other.) Given that all these states went for Bush in 2004, the fact that Obama is ahead in most says he pretty much has "closed the deal".

What's the old adage ..."Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer"? The opposite approach, heralded by Bush and Cheney, sure has not worked. Or are those thousands of cetrifuges Iran is operating and the missles NK keeps lobbing into the ocean simply signs of friendship?

"The new image GIRL"...How appropriate for Japan where everything is focused on girls. Personally, I would much prefer to see a sexy WOMAN once in a while in these ads. Isn't having men slobber over all the under-20's ever going to get old here? Sorry, retorical question.

Sarge...Guess we differ. I think I'm adult enough to be able to figure out how to get on and off and escalator without assistance. Besides, please tell me what VALUE they add to the retail experience -- since you are going to pay a portion of their salaries in your purchase? I'll take minimal help and cheap prices any day.

Any wonder why prices are so high here, and Japan has one of the least efficient domestic economies? Clearly just more overhead that we all will pay for in the end.

Speed...OK, I'll take that challenge. I am a notorious Japan-basher, but, my fiance and I have more or less "adopted" a homeless woman who sleeps near my apartment. We bring her food at least three times a week, and have given her spare clothes and things like a plastic tarp to cover her belongings. That does not in any way make us "better" than Japanese people, we just have different priorities and sensitivities. And, by the way, she is incredibly appreciative of our small efforts. Whenever we see her around the neighborhood she always smiles and says hello.

skipthesong...I actually believe ANOTSUSAGAMI's comment is right on target. "Folks like you" are just very defensive because you know you are backing a loser who has no plan, so has resorted to moves of desperation (Palin) and increasingly negative campaigning. If you took the time to read what Powell said (Who I happen to admire greatly, and would have voted for had he run.) one of his biggest concerns was the negative tone of McCain's campaign. Something along the lines of when the country was in the early stages of the financial crisis, all McCain and Palin could think to do was bring up Ayers. Guess the truth just hurst worse when you hear it from a fellow Republican huh?

Nice to see what the largest piece of green space in Tokyo looks like, since no one other than the Imperial family gets to enjoy it. Sure makes we want to keep paying my income tax.

I guess Palin and McCain want everyone to ignore the fact that the administration of GWB is "pals" with Libya now, and is likely to remove NK from the list of terrorist countries. This is just blatant desperation and character assasination. Which, coming fully four weeks out from election day, must show how truly bleak the Republicans own polling numbers are. They have already given up on Michigan. More will surely follow.
