yabits...Interesting quotes. One of the Republican spin folks, a woman, was just on CNN, and she said people should support McCain and Palin because "they are soulmates". (Honest to God.) Soulmates...who never met before a month or so ago. That is the most ridiculous reasoning for a ticket I have ever heard, and shows just how desparate they are to put some justification behind this debacle. This is simply becoming comical. Put a tent on this circus.

Romeo...The only thing "thick" here is your and other's desparation to try to find some reason to believe this woman is anything other than a shrill attack-dog. So she proved she can read someone else's words from a teleprompter. Her cheap shots at Obama were just that, and do not change the fact that all she and McCain are selling is fear. There is no plan. Name one significant issue that she actually proposed something specific on. Sorry, but fear ain't gonna work this time. Vision and change will win.

Can someone more up-to-speed on Japanese pop culture tell me which is more prestigious: The Lux Shine Award; The Beauty Week Award; or, the Best Jeanist?

What a silly country -- that there are these kinds of "awards" virtually everyday, and that they get huge press coverage.

mar4e0...Thanks for the laugh. Palin made "countless executive decisions"? Please. In two years as Governor of Alaska??? Are you counting the one where she had her ex brothet-in-law fired, for which she is being independently investigated? Stick with the God-fearing, Hockey Mom story line. At least it has some credibility.

mar4eo..."terrified"? I think not. Palin came off sounding like a 5th grade civics teacher lecturing a class on the U.S. government, but having no real idea what she is talking about. She paled in comparison to Mrs. Clinton, and everyone with any amount of objectivity could see that. She is a "hockey Mom" -- out of her league, but put there by McCain's desperation. Or, did you miss the latest polls that show McCain trailing badly in most of the key states? Respectfully, the "Dems" are just waiting for the next shoe to drop on her, and cannot wait to have her face off with Joe Biden. He will chew her up and spit her out.

ColAmerica ... I guess I don't have any sense then, cause he's got my vote. Has for months. Respectfully, I think the only Americans without any sense are the ones who think that the policies of GWB and Dick Cheney are the best America can do, and can somehow block out eight years of abject failure -- on every measure -- from their mind. And instead fall prey to the negative and devisive approaches of the like of Karl Rove -- mainly fear and prejudice. But, please enlighten us. Tell us a single significant accomplishment the Republican administration has to show for eight years in office, that would merit my vote for a continuation of that approach. Then maybe I'll come to my senses like you.

KnightsTemplars ... Silly comment:"Only patriots vote for McCain". That reflects the ridiculous implication that anyone who votes for Obama is not patriotic. Respectfully, there is nothing patriotic about voting for a man who simply wants to continue the disasterous policy of America as the bully of the world. The only difference bewteen him and Bush, is that he is not a "chicken hawk", but a hawk nonetheless. As a result, he completely misses the nuances that are at the heart of real diplomacy. And, his quote about Russia and Georgia demonstrates this perfectly. While he does not see any link between the U.S.'s unilateralism in Iraq, and Russia going into Georgia, everone with half a brain does -- including the Russian Foreign Minister who drew exactly that comparison when he said Russian withdrawl from Georgia is totally analogous to the U.S. situation in Iraq. We have had eight years of ideologues and governing with clever sound bites -- we need better.
And, his widely reported temper scares me to death. Just what the U.S. needs -- a stbborn old man with a temper.

Bilderberg666...You an count me as one "decent, moderate folk" who would NEVER vote for McCain. Respectfully, it is George W., and his Republican cohorts who have brought America to its knees, both domestically, but, most particularly, in foreign affairs. Russia just invaded Georgia with nary a whimper from Bush -- I guess he was too busy remembering what Putin's soul looked like. Iran is snubbing its nose at Bush's threats. And, the Iraqi's have gotten their timetable for troop withdrawl. Which is good, since the troops are desperately needed in Afganistan, which Bush forgot after he set his sites on Hussein. And all of these follies have helped push the price of oil up to astromomical levels, and put the U.S. trillions of dollars in debt. As a registered Independent, who has voted for both parties numerous times over the past few years, I believe the U.S. needs a change in direction -- desperately.

blvtbzk -- Great post. I had the exact same feeling. Especially when the 8 minutes and 30 seconds on the softball players was followed by another one minute and 30 seconds of team arrivals at Haneda. For pity sake, the "news" yesterday was that projections say that the pension fund will be bankrupt in 40 years if nothing is done, but that was not even covered. No, instead we got 10 minutes of hero-worship. Pretty amazing.

Highlight -- The Georgian and Russian athletes embracing on the medal podium only a couple of days after the war broke out there. That is what the Olympics is supposed to be about -- transcending politics and nationalism. Lowlight -- the predictably nationalistic coverage of the Japanese media and press, particularly in the second week, when Japan's results were at best disappointing. A 44% drop in golds, and a 33% drop in total medals meant we were subject to endless replays of the Week 1 successes and/or silly interviews with the medal winners, instead of showing other events. A guess they had to do something to try to keep ratings up, since the networks had paid Dentsu a fortune for the rights. But, the coverage certainly didn't reflect Japan's 11th place finish in total medals -- way behind both South Korea and China.

Fredrik2006...Your blind spot on this issue is as large as your obvious bias against the U.S. Agree, that this is insensitive. But, how is it any more insensitive than the Yasakuni Museum glorifying the "heroes" of Pearl Harbor, and justifying their actions based on some perceived U.S. provocation? Both acts denegrate the value of the lives lost by the respective countries. Granted, selling the sand for profit is completely tasteless. But, with respect to cultural insensitivity, they are virtually identical. Do you think the folks at Yasakuni give a rat's a@@ if their display would offend the average American? If you do, think again.

Steppenwolf...Bully for you. I have been here over 7 years, and can proudly state that I have never wasted so much as one yen in one of these clubs. I can "have a beer or two and relax" in my apartment or a restaurant with my girlfriend having a real/meaningful conversation, not some canned dribble the gals are taught to spew out. But, if you want to spend your money to have some young gal tell you how good-looking/funny/gently/smart/take-you-pick you are, then go for it.
