thepro...An educated guess would say at least half of Japanese salary men. And the half that doesn't, simply can't afford to.

Yeh, great. But all the posters promoting this new line in the Metro stations are just in Japanese -- including the stops. So, this wonderful Olympic city with the most "functional and punctual" transport system, once again displayed that it has no sense when becoming tourist friendly.

taka...agree. Good points. And you did not even get into the table manners of salarymen. My God, most are barely house-broken in that regard. Even when they are using a fork, knife and spoon, they insist on: lifting their plates so they can shovel everything directly into their mouths, refuse to cut anything, so they take huge/disgusting bites, and, slurp every kind of noodle/pasta as if it was cheap ramen. Luckily, most of the lady's table manners are inbecceble. Too bad the men don't learn.

Mizuno and the other J-suppliers were shown to be what many companies here are -- great copiers and slight tweekers -- but not real innovators. That is why the J-swimmers will wear Speedos, and listen to iPods between heats. And many Japanese will watch the swimmers on Korean flat-screens.

nigelboy...Why don't you read the latest JT update on Kato -- the knife-killer -- and tell me again how far off Spa is? His rants; "Oh, poor me, I'm ugly, so girls don't want me" and "I'm over 25, so therefore I cannot get a woman", are excatly what this article is about. Now if Spa could just suggest some positive ways to deal with these losers.

nigelboy...very witty. But the only "clueless" person here is you if you don't think such guys exist in large numbers here. The goverenment's own statistics say that there are millions of freeters -- with the number growing every year.
But, for the record, I quoted one figure. And, oh, I was being sarcastic. But I guess you missed that. You were too busy trying to be witty. But, even so, you can't refute my main point, or the article's -- that Japan has thousands and thousands of these under-employed, little mommie's boys. And who really wants losers like that having kids anyway?

Does Japan really want guys in their 30's: still living with mommie; making less than JPY 2.0 million a year; and, 20% of which are still virgins, having kids? I honestly think increased immigration starts to look awfully good.

A couple of questions: When was this picture taken? Do we know for a fact that this was last night, and is a direct reaction to the Akihabara incident? Or is that just JT posters speculation. This could just be normal police procedure in Shinjuku, as it is in Roppongi. Also, while they are at it, could they please confiscate that stupid-looking stocking cap the guy is wearing? It is an eye-sore, so therfore constitutes a public nuisance. Besides it's like 25 degrees out.

Norpinhead ...agree. But I also read somewhere once that one of the major J-companies does not give employees any real responsibility until they have been on the job roughly 15 years. My God. Fifteen years -- or until you are nearly 40 -- before you can make any kind of a decision. That is pretty depressing. Probably, why, as Patrick_Smash said, these blues may start this month, but they go on for years.

timorborder...for the record, I did NOT say the police officer "should have shot first and asked questions later" (Very colorful, but off point.) What I maintain is that the officer should have DRAWN his weapon as soon as confronted by an imminent threat. His attempt to subdue Kato proved fruitless, so all he did is subject himself and possibly others to more harm. It was only when threatened by the use of deadly force that Kato relented. And, cleo, there is nothing "Rambo" about that. Just common sense, and, in many places, standard police procedure.

nutsagain...Disagree about the "self-restraint and coolness" part. The fact is the officer only drew his weapon because he could not subdue Kato despite repeated blows from his night stick. In other words, he was neither restrained nor cool -- just physically incapable of handling the situation short of pulling out his gun. Which is not atypical of J-cops. And, while your "hail of bullets" characterization is colorful, it ignores the obvious fact that Kato had assaulted nearly 20 people, and, as long as he was in possession of a weapon, remained a threat to others. In those circumstances, I have no problems with an officer of the law making him "look like Swiss cheese" if he makes ANY threatening gestures. That is why you arm policemen and instruct and repeatedly train them on the proper procedure for choosing to discharge their weapon.

Wow, a country only 232 years old has the son of a Nigerian immigrant, and a white American woman, as the presidential nominee of one of the two major parties. Makes me proud. Sure, racism still exists in the U.S., no doubt. But at least enough people could look past that and vote for who they felt was most quailified. And, his strongest challenger was a woman. Compare that to the centuries old culture we live in here, that still won't grant citizenship to the descendants of Koreans forcibly relocated here decades ago, and has like 2.0% of women in key management, governmental, and ministry positions. Obama has had my vote since his speech at the convention four years ago, and I was fortunate enough to attend a fund-raising event for him last August in the states at which he spoke. As the woman in Erin Brokovich says: "A good day."

nigelboy...Wow, a little hot under the collar today? Respectfully, you are cherry-picking as well. You want to discuss only four crimes. I believe you measure the effectiveness of cops by ALL major crimes. And, if you read Terrie Lloyd's column today, you'd see that he quotes an arrest rate of only 31.2%. Arrest, not clearance. And, where exactly is the "biased rant" in my post. It is FACT, not rant, that Japan has a lower overall crime rate, so hence fewer crimes to clear in the first place. Second, it is FACT, not rant, that many crimes in Japan, especially things like sexual assault/molestation/groping/etc. go un-reported. But, please, defend your precious adopted-home against these "rants" if you must. Oh, and one final stat -- the homicide conviction rate for the Hawker's and Blackman's is 0.00%. Defend that.

diegameL...nice job of cherry picking your stats. The actual fact is that the clearance rate for Japan for all major crimes is only 23.6% in the latest statistics. Given that Japan has the lowest number of reported crimes, that means the Japanese cops are in fact inept. They have fewer major crime cases, and still only clear at the same rate as other major countries. And we all know this clearance rate is inflated, since many crimes in Japan go unreported.

Patrick_Smash...Disagree compelety. If you have ever raised teenage kids, you would know that the mental pressure on them is enormous. They do not have to have "mental problems" in order to at least ponder suicide. Being bullied or ostrasized can make it seem like there is no sense in living, particularly in Japan, where acceptance is everything. And, schools rarely pick up the signs. I was lucky -- one of my kids was the victim of horrendous rumors that went on for a couple of months, and put him under tremendous strain. But, he came to me in time, and with the help of the school counselor/administration, and a private counselor, got him sorted out. My sincerest condolences to this girl's parents. They will be asking themselves "Why" and "What if" for the rest of their lives.

cleo and other J-cop defenders...Why don't you ask Ms. Hawker's parents what they think, or maybe Ms. Blackman's? You don't measure the competence of a police force by how good they are at keeping bicycles from getting stolen. You measure it by how they do at solving and getting convictions in the really tough cases. In this area, the J-cops are pittiful. That is why their true clearance rate -- the number of reported crimes that actually end up in a conviction -- is incredibly low.
