@ harry _gatto, because the article is about japan, not other countries . also, the way the article is worded . doesn't seem as if months of deliberation took place ;-)

Japan has no natural resources . Which means they have no bartering tool. With rice at least they have something for self sufficiency in case there ever is a world war, natural disasters which destroys crops in other countries or countries like china who may decide at any moment to just stop selling rice to Japan for some reason or other . You have to protect your country & their people to a certain extent . You cannot rely 100% on other countries for everything. especially your staple food. of course, Japanese will continue growing rice, but the percentage of rice grown in japan will shrink yearly as prices will drop & profits will shrink. It's already becoming a problem as the younger generation does not want to farm . This will only exasperate the problem .
Allow the import of rice, but keep it very controlled . I believe rice is imported into japan & this control seems very reasonable . I know awamori ( Okinawa's local brew ) is made from Thai rice & I believe many of the convenience stores use imported rice . & although they're saying here tariffs on imported rice run at 800% the convenience stores sell it at extremely cheap prices . hmmmmmm . please correct me where i'm wrong as these are beliefs not sure how factual.

All Japanese i've spoken with on the matter are extremely pleased Tokyo won the rights to host the olympics. Though those same people are totally embarrassed at the way Abe lied to the world in such a blatant matter .

He also is the only major leaguer to have 10 consecutive seasons with over 200 hits & was 4th fastest in mlb history to reach 2500 hit. also japan season is over 30 games shorter. point being he would've most likely done ever better if he had come to the states sooner .

This is just wrong. That being said, I believe when people commit suicide on train tracks that they're families should be held responsible .

@ Ebisen. Exactly !! Other farmers are already producing less as many stores choose to import the cheaper foods . Other countries will then control Japan as they can starve their people at any time by cutting of the food supplies. Need something to be able to rely on.

excellent!! it's about time someone spoke up about this ! america is a melting pot, so obviously there would be many borrowed words from other languages . japan is not & the words that are used here, the pronunciation becomes totally different not to mention the fact that most people have no clue what they mean .
