well, look at the alternatives. alcohol. much much worse. tobacco. a big killer. wonder what the stats are worldwide for people dying from alchohol or alcohol related deaths. death from tobacco use. & death from marijuana use. marijuana gets such a bad rap & i'm not sure why . of course you shouldn't operate heavy machinery while stoned, but you sure as hell shouldn't use heavy machinery when consuming alcohol. tobacco even causes 2nd hand deaths. meaning you shouldn't even be near a person smoking tobacco.

not in the near future, but i would think 10-15 years down the road newspapers may be near extinction. much quicker & up to date news on the net. not to mention the growing worry internationally about the environment. see what happens.

well, they sure have to police their sites better. china doesn't seem to have a problem doing that, so why can't the rest of the world? ahhhh. it might cost a few extra bucks.

is there any study out there which says daylight savings time would reduce power usage ? if so, please post the link. the only complaints i hear is that the japanese salary many will actually work longer hours in summer as it will be light longer & they can't leave the office when it's light out.

i hope the japanese complain about not having tatami rooms when they travel overseas. then maybe everyone would notice how idiotic this all is.

well, if this would help or not is of course debatable. but, hopefully it would open people's eyes & more companies, offices & people in general would follow suit. You have to start somewhere.

compare the rest of the world's professional athletes or entertainers, as some have suggested, & you will see they are well underpaid. they have 6- 15 day tournaments a year. not to mention all the exhibitions throughout the year & strenuous workouts daily. only a 3% pay increase in 7 years? come on!! this guys may look fat & lazy, but they work their butts off. when sumo is in your area next time, go to a stable & watch a practice session. then see how you feel.

A little off the topic, but i wonder how many foreigners, who have been here for 2,3,4 years or more, can speak, read & write Japanese ? For the average japanese, there may be no need for English. But, in professions like banking, import -export, medical profession, just to name a few, English is most definitely needed. Picking thru the comments above, a few do hit the nail on the head as there is more than 1 reason why the Japanese are weak in English. The schooling system(mombusho) is obviously the biggest problem. Lack of confidence is another along with fear of making mistakes. It seems as these days more parents are taking the matters into their own hands & enrolling very young children, as young as 1 or 2, into English conversation schools. Still to early to tell if this will bear fruit. But, hopefully it will at the least, clean up their pronunciation & help with their confidence & start realizing it's okay to make mistakes. As we said growing up "you learn from your mistakes".

what i suggest to you guys is ask the japanese what the word means & why they use it. stop assuming what they think it to mean. you will also get different answers in the different age groups. but, if it really bothers you guys, then just go home.

most of the japanese who use the term "gaijin" have no clue what the actual meaning is. to them it just means someone other than japanese. there are many words or sayings out there which the japanese have no clue about the true meaning or connotations . like "half" to most japanese it just means someone with 2 nationalities.or the other horrible saying "bakachon" camera. again, most japanese have no clue as to the true meaning. just have to learn to ignore the japanese naiveness.

although i don't feel suicide is a bad thing, when used to escape some wrong doing is wrong. rjdjr states above that white collar criminals just get basically a slap on the wrist. this is mainly because they drag everyone else down with them . they should just accept what they've done as wrong & as they say " do the crime do the time" . or if you are going to rat on others because they have done wrong as well, then do not plea bargain. as for suicide, if someone is not mentally ill & they feel they've just had enough of life, or they are in such pain from a serious illness, it should be their prerogative what to do with their own life. so, if they want to "move on" then so be it.

as the old saying goes, "it's better to be safe than sorry" . especially after last weeks article when the police gave a man doused in kerosene a cigarette & lighter. don't want to put your children in their hands for protection.
