The presence doesn't have necessity, but it has its plusses.

I guess nobody is too worried about the senkaku islands these days.

Yeah, samsung is selling more units, but a look at web traffic stats shows iOS users dominate, in spite of their smaller numbers. So iOS people actually use their silicon in comparison.

Also, for who is 'winning', look up the pareto principle. Tho it may change (and probably will) apple has the profitable part of the market cornered, while android covers the commoditized part.

And also also, maybe android should not be viewed as a single entity. Because they don't number them, you get things like jelly bean, ice cream sandwich, and gingerbread. Another way to look at android is that "it" is really several different operating systems, that are so customized along the way that an upgrade will be anything but easy, if even possible. You're better off buying a new phone/tablet, and even then you may not get the latest android os, or be able to easily upgrade to it.

Meanwhile, iOS7 is available for immediate download on a range of older apple devices. Sure, that range of older devices could/should be bigger, but at least it's there, and almost automatic.

Perhaps this a naive question, but instead of these right-wing groups, how about if the islands were "settled" by some typical Japanese?

A group of retirees who could camp and be supported there by whoever?

    Equality:

I generally agree part of your comment--good that she got caught, and shame on her. But the fine/penalty does seem really excessive.

Also, I'm not a math whiz, but I think a billion yen (at today's rates) is about $10 million, not $100m.

Greedy governments? How about greedy rich widows? With $100 million in assets, she can't pay her share of taxes? Leave the tax burden to those of us with 0.2% or 0.3% of her assets? Shame on her. I'm glad she was caught!

Dr. Craig says, “In Japan this has been known for a long time, but raises the question: why would these mobile hunter-gatherers invest time in heavy, fragile pots?

“Our research shows that [hunter-gatherer] pottery was associated with processing fish—we suggest that these resource-rich water-edge environments meant that they could be slightly less mobile, thus freeing up time to invest in pottery production.”

Instead, I would offer that these were effectively fish-farmers, not mobile hunter-gatherers, living off a water resource, in the same way a farmer lives off the land. Same thing the US pacific NW, where for the indigenous there, the easy takings were from the water and not the land. Why spend time digging in the dirt, when the water is so bountiful?

My Dad's a long time mid-westerner, who's major life traumas were a smoking habit he finally ditched about 1980 and 19 months as a POW in Germany.

I don't think he's ever had, nor could I could get him to eat sushi, and he's now 94. It's not all about the fish.

Friday dinner is our temaki day. I'm stingy with the rice, generous with the fish and veggie toppings, and then switch about halfway thru to just eating the fish (as sashimi).

btw, buri is the best fish in the world, not tuna.

Yes, the driver is a negligent ass, but a five-year old, somehow separated enough from other members of her family, enough that a car can hit her and not the others...?

As a parent of two I find this surprising.
