He says as he denies Japan needs to make amends for what it did.

The only thing I see is non-Jomon people having occupied the peninsula now demanding from the descendents of the Jomon people (after having ethnically cleansed them from the peninsula no less), that they acknowledge and authorize the theft of more of their lands, and now money, and technology. It never ends. 3500 years of feuding. You should have stayed home Mumun people. Life would have been so much simpler.

Isn't this the monarchy that Koreans always harp about having ties to? Is that anyway to greet your long, not so lost Emperor? At his age the Emperor has probably had enough traveling for the year, especially since his trip to attend the Queen's Diamond Jubilee was just three months ago.

Japan should sever all ties with South Korea and the sooner the better. There's little to no benefit for Japan in maintaining ties.

The solution to understanding the Korean people is to begin at the beginning by studying the Mumun people and moving on from there.

A bunch of rocks in the middle of the water?? WHO CARES!!

That's exactly why it doesn't matter who controls the islands. The islands themselves have no economic value. Japan can go into the waters around Takeshima and begin surveys or what not and it will be the Koreans that will have the burden of keeping the Japanese out.

Yeah, not like the moronic Japanese who stomp on Russian flags and drag them in the mud before the Russian embassy. You 'find' what you want, it's still hypocritical.

Flag stomping Uyoku, another great product of Korean genes. About a third of the Uyoku are in fact made up of Koreans. Another 60% or so of the Uyoku are Burakumin, a class of "Japanese" that were more than likely slaves when they were brought over from the mainland and remained an underclass throughout Japanese history. Burakumin villages were only found in western Japan, areas that were heavily occupied by Yayoi/Toraijin. In Korea they'd be referred to as Cheonmin or Baekjeong. You won't find any Burakumin villages in the Tohoku region because Jomon people never kept slaves. The slaves class, another fine export from Korea.

All maps that predate the signing show Dokdo as clearly not Japanese territory. How does that foot taste?

It didn't take but 5 minutes to find an example refuting this statement. The 1875 edition of the Stieler Hand Atlas shows the Liancourt Rocks (Takeshima) to be a part of Japan, and in a very clear fashion I might add. See http://goo.gl/JrR0q for an image of the map.

This swim is just another publicity stunt in a long and never ending line of publicity stunts. Compared to the sort of stunts they've pulled in the past, this one is on the tame side.

South Korean citizens have staged numerous protests against Japan over the past few years, some with extreme demonstrations, including a woman and her son who cut off a finger each, and one man who attempted to set himself on fire.

See http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/02/dokdo_or_takeshima.html for images of past protests.

Smithinjapan, I was wondering if you had any links to information about the claims to the island as I genuinely am interested about what information is out there.

See http://dokdo-or-takeshima.blogspot.com/ The website/blog has more information about the Takeshima/Dokdo issue than any other website out there.

With all that rain coming down there soon, it is like a suicide mission.

Gwangbokjeol is celebrated annually on August 15 which is coincidentally the same day the Kamikaze (typhoon) destroyed the second Korean/Chinese (Mongol in name only) invasion fleet. Reminds me of a song by the Propellerheads... But to me it seems quite clear. That it's all just a little bit of history repeating.

The USS Porter was heading southwest into the Persian Gulf. The destroyer was exiting the Strait of Hormuz while the Otowasan was heading northeast into the strait toward the Gulf of Oman. The general rule, when two vessels are meeting head-on or nearly head-on, is for each vessel to alter its course to starboard (right) so that each vessel passes on the port side of the other. The USS Porter veered instead to port (left) putting the destroyer directly into the path of the tanker. The destroyer was hit on its starboard side around 1 a.m. Sunday. The only thing left to investigate is why Commander Martin Arriola ordered his ship to turn port side.

Congrats to Bolt and the Jamaicans for winning the gold medal and setting a world record. Too bad about Japan. Had they run as fast as they had during their semi final run at 38.07 seconds they could have taken the bronze.

Japanese and European companies spend heavily in research and development, for this see the Financial Times from August 8, 2012. Korean companies, cars and electronics do not; instead, they clone the parts and then start selling it as their own.

It's just not in the field of electronics. The difference between Korea and Japan can be seen in the difference between Hwang Woo-suk and Shinya Yamanaka. Both were hailed as great scientists in the field of stem cell research. One was eventually shown to be a fraud of limited value to the scientific community, the other a real innovator whose IPS cell tech is now being used around the world. In 2012 Yamanaka won the Millennium Technology Prize along with Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux. In addition, if you look at the Millennium Technology Prize winners there are two Japanese that have won the prize but not one Korean. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Technology_Prize

I agree that the Andy Gil was taking a dangerous rick by participating in the harassment of the whalers. But did the Japanese have to deliberately aim the ship at the gil? That was extreme behaviour. Much more extreme than anything the Sea Shepard's have done.

An inquiry by Maritime New Zealand came to the following conclusion regarding the incident:

"Rather, the collision appears to have resulted from a failure on the part of both masters, and the crew of both vessels, to appreciate and react appropriately to the potential for a collision."

There's really not much more to say about that incident.

But you heavily implied it and now you're backpeddling.

How would I imply that when I quoted that "they all claimed they came from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh and Chechnya." Most US contractors are former US military. If they come from Pakistan and Bangladesh and Chechnya then it doesn't imply US contractors. It just implies that there are foreigners from those countries fighting against Assad, many of them for money.

Here's an excerpt from a Reuters article stating that the opposite occurs as well, foreigners bringing wads of cash and recruiting Syrians:

It's little surprise then that battle-hardened fighters from abroad, with wads of cash from the Gulf, appeal to rebels. One opposition activist said that groups like Ahrar al-Sham get money from Gulf Islamists in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. "In a period of several months when I was checking, they sent about 3 million Kuwaiti dinars ($10.6 million) to hardliners like them," he said, requesting anonymity... "We're getting so many guests from the Gulf now, and Islamists from Europe too. Sometimes groups as big as 25 people. And if they get chatty they tell me all about the money they're sending in. One guy told me he alone brought more than $100,000," said a hotel employee who also asked not to be named.

The Andy Gil ship was not moving because it had no power (have you seen the videos?!?) The Japanese rammed a much smaller vessel that was not moving. Please check the video.

I've seen the video. So have a lot of other people. Here's a comment by an astute viewer that pretty much sums up the video:

And you can clearly see the prop wash from the Ady Gil increase from idle (almost imperceptible) to ahead speed (white foam) just as the bow of the Maru approached them. If they hadn't had done that then they wouldn't have been hit. Like I said, both were held at fault for the collision. The Maru for being so close and the Gil for crossing the path of an approaching ship. The Gil was there to harass and cause problems to the whalers and that's what they did until they forgot that fifty tons of steel will always win over 3 tons of carbon fiber and fiberglass. There was some speculation at the time by others that the Ady was near the end of her operational cycle due to cracks in her framing and so on and that the repairs were going to cost more than what the ship was originally built for and that's why they took so many risks with her. She was expendable.

Apparently you don't know much about PMC's or you'd know that the only English speaking country that allows combat ready contractors is the US, they're illegal in the rest of the west. And if there were US PMC's operating in Syria the war would look completely different.

I never stated that US contractors like Academi (previously known as Xe Services and Blackwater) or DynCorp were operating inside Syria, although I wouldn't rule it out. But the fact remains that a large portion of the rebels fighting against the Assad regime are not Syrian. Here's an excerpt from a NY Times article claiming members of Al Qaeda are now operating inside Syria.

The evidence is mounting that Syria has become a magnet for Sunni extremists, including those operating under the banner of Al Qaeda. An important border crossing with Turkey that fell into Syrian rebels' hands last week, Bab al-Hawa, has quickly become a jihadist congregating point.

73,000 cubic meters, if they dug down one meter would only be around 18 acres worth of soil. It could be more or less depending on the depth of soil removal. But let's just say for the sake of argument that it's 18 acres. Yet Agent Orange was sprayed over 5 million acres. So the project will cost $43 million to clean up 18 acres. A better solution would be to use biological organisms to break down the dioxins in the soil. A farmer could pollinate his crops using human labor but it's cheaper and more efficient to use bees. The same could be said of breaking down dioxins. This article is written in a way that makes it look like the Vietnamese were doing nothing while they waited for the US to act. The Vietnamese have been working on bioremediation since 1999. Since 2009 they've been working with scientists from the US to break down dioxins using bacteria.

In May 2009, scientists from the institute continued to carry out the project in coordination with the US Department on Environmental Protection from the expenditure of the Ford Foundation, piloting at the scale of 2 cubic meters with 11 different formulas in old military bases in Da Nang city.

This sort of thing has also been going on in Japan.

A research group led by Prof. Kosaku Murata at Kyoto University's Graduate School of Agriculture has succeeded in engineering "super bacteria" capable of degrading dioxin two to three times faster than wild-type strains. The research findings were published in the January 16, 2006, issue of the British journal Nature Biotechnology.

I wonder which company will get the contract to clean up the soil and whether any members of Congress that were on the committee to allocate the funds have ties to the company contracted to remediate the soil.

Many of the "rebels" aren't even Syrian. Two weeks ago Oerlemans, a famous Dutch photo journalist, and John Cantlie, another photographer from the UK, were captured by one of these so called rebel groups. These "rebels" were crossing into Syria from Turkey. Here's what Oerlemans told NRC Handelsblatt newspaper:

"One of the black jihadists freaked out and shouted: 'These are journalists and now they will see we are preparing an international jihad in this place.'" He said that none of the fighters was Syrian. They all claimed they came from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh and Chechnya and they said there was some vague 'emir' at the head of the group." About 40 per cent of the militants spoke English. In fact, several apparently talked with recognizable regional British accents, from Birmingham and London.

In other words, these rebels are just paid mercenaries and the only thing they're fighting for is money. It's a good bet that even the ones that claim to be Jihadist would demand to be paid when the fighting ends, that is if they live long enough to collect their payment.

That cigarette packaging looks like it was inspired by an MP3 player or a smart phone. My guess it that the marketing is going to be targeted at the iPhone and iPod crowd. Maybe they're taking a page out of Apple's product development book. If Sony were to design a cigarette pack, what would it look like?
