sums it up very well

at the end of the day, any notion of a "national beauty" ends up being a political construction, boiling down to what men expect women to be; oppressive at its heart. how murky do you want the waters to be? best to side-step the issue entirely and just do your best to make as objective a decision as possible.

whilst you could say that all the finalist will have certain characteristics in common (probably all tall, curvaceous) i also don't believe they have much chance of winning unless they at least in some way reflect the nation that they are representing. but in order to do this they don't have to demonstrate extremes of their nation's racial stereotypes. that's not what the contest is about. for instance, i doubt miss united kingdom is a red-head, and miss sweden is a brunette. perhaps it is good to celebrate that in some ways the racial differences between us a more blurred than ever?

there is a case to be made if the views are "higher" than what one would normally be able to see from the street. the nosey neighbour view is also valid, but i think that if the views are "passerby" viewpoints then most criticism becomes moot

what's the japanese for publicity stunt?
well everyone's so obsessed/neurotic about marriage that pretty much any business can create a product and call it konkatsu-something and it will get media attention. did any wars start anywhere yesterday?

@likeitis - you're just buying into the propagandist idea that all japanese are genetically identical, share the same ancestors and thus look the same. the fact is there are massive differences in skin colour, face shape, nose contour etc. that go beyond mere individual differences and down to actual underlying genetic differences. have a proper look around on a train and this is plain to see although not what most people are willing to accept. japan was populated from the pacific islands, korea, mongolia, china, russia etc. etc. unless you believe that they fell from the sky...

sigh looks like a large percentage of commentators on this page, and probably the public at large, would never be happy unless one of the tarentos themselves is nominated. would be fun to see someone like Becky competing with Miss Venezuela or Miss Brazil. it would be absolute carnage. but then at least "true japanese beauty" would be represented :/

well, commenting on the parallels with GTA, which i recently played through; none of the plot lines involve civilians, all the characters are underworld figures. you CAN shoot police but you can also avoid doing so, although not always easily... attacking civilians usually results in consequences (their own retaliation or the police). it's actually impossible to beat the police. etc. i'm not going to argue that GTA is squeaky white pure morality, but you have to bear in mind that in the average hero/villain adventure the good guy kills MORE people than the bad guys, but he plays the role of upholding some kind of conventional morality. it's not about violence as such, it's more about moral intent. in GTA you're never rewarded for immoral behaviour although you can get away with it. this rape game seems to actively reward immoral behaviour. i think that's the difference

i was reading an interesting thing on the net the other night. the argument was that heterosexual men should actively support the legitimisation of homosexuality. the argument was that the easier it is for men to come out, the more will, thus putting them clearly off the heterosexual market and thus increasing the value of "in the market" heterosexual males.
quite an interesting argument, i think!

most people will just say how "taihen" this must have been for the poor officer and the case is closed. people don't really expect anything of those in authority, it seems. they are just put there by god, i suppose...

i dunno... my impression of japanese ladies fashion is that for every time i see a girl dressed to the nines and looking fantastic, i'll see a girl wearing a long-sleeve t-shirt under a sackcloth/skirt with LEGGINGS/jeans tucked into boots/other ridiculous fashion disaster

it benefits from being somewhat low capacity. it's nice to come back to an empty narita, but if it was a major regional hub like heathrow it would be a different story entirely

i think another problem is that in japan people don't seem to realise the dangers involved, and might even be inclined to believe that it is better for a politician to come from a political family
Posted in: A politician who does the people good is a good politician, regardless of whether he or she is a second-generation politician or worked his or her way up to become a lawmaker.

selfishness is not quite the word i will use: i think people respond to incentives. there have to be adequate incentives offered to compensate people for their labours. in my opinion it is not valid to say that capitalism provides people with better incentives since many of the incentives people have dangled in front of them are false, illusory or unobtainable.
anyway, i think both capitalism and socialism are ideologies that are becoming dated. both are based around labour and we are fast entering an age, or in fact have already entered an age where labour might stop being the focus of most of our existences. read the bob black essay, the abolition of work
Posted in: The final goal is a socialist, communist society in Japan, overcoming capitalism. But before that, we are taking a step-by-step approach. The first stage is to solve problems of labor and living standards according to people's demand.
