this calls to mind a debito article from the japan times about all those rural communities which are dying out and in desperate need of a injection of youngsters, but it will never happen because no-one wants to move there and then have their family discriminated against for the next 10 generations
so at least when it comes to discrimination japan is an equal-opportunities employer

it can't because it is so deeply insecure about itself, but doesn't realise that dealing with your problems openly and head on is actually the way to self-assuredness. but unfortunately the dominate policy is "hear no evil, see no evil..." and just sweep it under the carpet and pretend that everything is already sunny and perfect.

i imagine the problem is the same for a lot of popular culture coming out of asia; artists just don't do their own thing so you either get a poor imitation of a western style, or a tacky take on "traditional culture"

i'd like them to be useful. whilst i'm a little suspicious of "loyalty" cards (companies should be working to secure my business, not vice versa) i do hear about people using the cards to their advantage. only problem is there are so many schemes and i'm uninformed about how to make best use of them

i don't think it's any surprise that immigration has a tendency to "fail" as quoted here; there is little political incentive to do it "rightly" and tolerance is a hard lesson to learn when for the vast majority of human history people haven't often had to deal with people who don't look like them. the point is, however, that the world is not getting any bigger and it is imperative that we all get used to the idea of living close to people we don't (initially) want or understand

asian popstars have the whole "idol" mould whereby music is just one part of the package that they sell. this doesn't really fly in the west, in fact its rather frowned on for an artist to work in multiple fields. so in asia a signer can hope to capitalise when they come to be seen as an idol whereas in the west the have to stand up as a singer alone.
