anyway, here are some simple maths:
current private premiums = cost of cover + cost of administration + private insurer profit
therefore;
cost of public health care = current private premiums - insurer profit
it confounds me how many people don't seem to be able to see this. take the profit of private insurers out of the equation and the cost of care can go nowhere but down. and don't fob me off about the "administrative blackhole" that a socialised system would be: how on earth anyone thinks it would be more expensive to administer for a single health care system, with a single set of costs, terms and conditions, vs. a system with numerous private insurers with a plethora of terms, contracts, conditions, costs, phone numbers, addresses etc. etc.
but i suppose at the end of the day if you use the prefix social~ most americans will be running for the hills before you have a chance to make any points about how a system would benefit them... it comes down to the fact that in america, private profit is everything, regardless of the damage it does in wider terms

how any "democracy" can ever justify having private inquiries regarding anything other than strictly internal matters is beyond me. as soon as a member of the public becomes involved, a public inquiry should be mandatory
needless to say i wasn't surprised by the news, although the anarchist in me wanted to see the plot of The Trial of Tony Blair acted out in real life

in a country so prone to earthquakes, to some extent it is understandable that buildings aren't thought of as permanent parts of the landscape. that said there is so much ugly, utilitarian architecture. legislation is desperately needed to start turning japan into an environment that's pleasant to live in

robots are great, but can we have them as a substitute for human labour, not human relationships, please?
Posted in: Nowadays, almost every family has a car. In the near future, every family would be having a humanoid robot that can help out various things at home.

more generally, there is definitely something wrong with the "developed" world. concepts like "the economy" and "industry" are supposed to be a means to end, not ends in themselves

possibly. i think it can be summarised as a disease of affluence, however. previous post war generations did the 80 hour weeks, but at least they could see real, tangible changes during the post-war recovery. now that japan has reached a high level of material affluence, the question should be asked; what are we working for now? why has japan gained all the material trappings of modernity but still requires its people to be slaves to the social models of the past?
i think a lot of young people realise this, if unconsciously. they aren't a different species to the older generations, they have just grown up in a very different mental and material environment

quite true. too much obligation and formality getting in the way of people actually forming relationships with each other. after my time in this country i have come to believe that japanese social dynamics are based on the assumption that people can't get along, thus it is best to build as many obstacles to real human interaction as possible

far too much make-up. at least she will succeed in selling more make-up, seeing as she is setting a standard for wearing a higher quantity of it at any one time. more generally a little bit of make-up is nice to enhance beauty, but it's a pretty fine line before it becomes a barrier
