odd, that considering the lack of young people in japan... could it be that tv is deliberated sanitised and intellectually insulting?

i any debate similar to this, you can replace the words "japanese culture" with the words "existing political status quo". "japanese culture" is a misnomer, the truth is that any change to the existing, perceived to be "homogeneous" thread of society would diminish the power of the existing political structure: people will elect officials that they feel represent themselves. but by using a nice, fluffy and intangible concept such as culture you can inspire anger at some perceived threat from outside. furthermore, cultural relativism has quite a strong foothold in other nations so it is also an effective way of scaring off would-be criticisers

nail applied to head. the agencies own the entertainment biz
a lot on this thread has been said before, but i'd like to add that the presence of no-one but tarento on tv shows is good evidence that rumours of the demise of japan's caste system were greatly exaggerated. it would be great if normal people did appear on tv, but i think Gaijinocchio's points are a little too familiar.

kim isn't an idiot. he took one look at what happened in iraq and realised he needed to cover his a*s. that's all that's happening here. why on earth would he want to attack any of his neighbours when it would surely end with his head on a stick? this is all just political chess. anyone attempting to make it into more than this has ulterior motives themselves

having a google, there are some much better pictures of her although there is something a little odd about her face. mind you, that might not be a bad thing for her modelling career.
this photo is very unflattering.

i think the thing that is odd about the maid scene, not that i can claim to be an expert, is the "safe" borderline sexuality, not to mention paying to have the company of women (hostesses? geishas?). after all, are we not seeing a slump in fertility in japan? is all this asexuality, or sanitised sexual attention a cause or effect of the slump in fertility?
basically, sexuality is a fact of life. either do it (healthily and legally) or don't do it at all and dedicate your life to science or something. treading a weird middle-ground of wanting women, but not having the gall to act up it healthily and instead being reduced to paying to safe titillation is not a good for society in my humble opinion

i think this statistic is rather distorted by a profiteering private health insurance system. yes, i also hope the obama administration will be able to return healthcare in the US back to the sane state it was before Tricky Dicky ruined it

not to mention war and lack of access to modern medical care
i would also like to see statistics of life expectancy of japan excluding okinawa. using okinawa as an example to reflect the lifestyles of mainland japanese is rather misleading, especially when you consider consider that it only recently became part of the country

it also makes sense to me that the tough circumstances the japanese lived through during the war years had a beneficial effect in the long-run for the generation that survived. easy lifestyles don't make you resilient

i can't help thinking that japan's much-trumpeted life expectancy has already peaked... watched an interesting documentary about okinawa's life expectancy and the basic point was that okinawans had evolved to suit a particularly strict and minimal diet of vegetables, but abundance had seriously jeopardised that in recent times

with regards to hygienic inconsistency, "the wearing of the masks" (and i suppose the hand cleaning as well) are just the socially proscribed ways of showing attention to ones obligations with regards to this matter. in fact, people are just serving the usual social expectations placed upon them, having little or no actual relation to the matter at hand (the spread of the H1N1 virus).
as such, just business as usual...

press turn up for the tarento. movie promoter hopes the movie poster will slip into a few of the shots. like that star trek promotion last week. the journalists get back to the office and notice there are a bunch of gaijins in the background of their shot
