The maximum sentence allowed under Article 14 of the Japanese penal code is 30 years. I commend the judge for giving this rapist 50 years.

Hm. I don't know if I would be so quick to say how "good" the judge did. After all, 9 rapes x 30 years is 270 years.

Canada was a very hateful place. Outside of a handful of major urban centers hugging the border with the United States it still is very backwards and racist.

While I agree that Canada has done terrible things in the past, I do take exception to this comment. First of all, unless you can tell me that you LIVED in Canada during WWII, I would ask you to keep your comments to events that happened. How do you know that it was a very hateful place?

Secondly, visiting a small rural area such as Kelowna (yes, I know it's a "city") is hardly indicative of the general attitude of Canada. Are you saying that other countries aren't the same in more rural areas? Also, for your information, the majority of the Canadian population remains in Southern Canada because as you go north, the climate is too inhospitable. (Thus the majority of major cities are close to the states).

However, I do agree that Canada and the State are quite different. Although many people will claim that Canada is an extension of the States, this is simple not true and in fact we often disagree with a lot of the policies from our southern neighbour.

@ThaiGirlDEC. 05, 2011 - 05:25PM JST How can you charge someone with murder for something that is only 11 days old? This makes no sense at all. Probably infanticide should be a separate crime. wow.....and this post is coming from a "woman".. Apparently, to some "people" a newborn baby has no value, same as an aborted baby.... unbelievable!

It's interesting that you took her comment that way. I actually thought she meant it should be a more serious penalty/crime than a "regular" murder.

I use a combination of IE, Firefox and Chrome. If one doesn't do what I want, or has some sort of problem, I try the next. I find Chrome works the most consistently though (for now).

The main reason to run Firefox for me has been the rikaichan... that's excellent. There is a port available for Chrome but it doesn't seem to work at all. I agree with the posters above. Firefox used to be great but now it seems to be not working so well. Chrome with working rikaichan would be my ideal...

Chrome DOES have Rikaichan and it works just fine. Also, it will automatically (or not if you prefer) translate any full site to English (or the language of your preference). I use Rikaichan when I want to learn kanji, but if I'm not in the mood, I just let the browser translate the whole page for me for convenience. It works way better than translation sites.

One cool thing that Firefox has allows you to download streaming videos and converts them quite easily (basically a one step process). With the other browsers you have to do too many steps.

This is a blight on Canadian history, and it shames me to think about what has been done. I would like to also comment that this article is NOT about a contest over which country treated it's prisoner's the worst during WWII, but rather a reminder about what happened in Canada.

I can't even imagine how I would feel if I were in the same situation as those prisoners.

If the European model is working better, why don't they just take a look into the possibility of copying it's system?

There are so many Japanese women who have international experience and medals in judo. Why do they invariably give such jobs to men?

There may be a lot of women with the proper qualifications, etc., but I'm sure that there are even more schools than there are qualified female instructors. They probably hire the best candidate for the job in their opinion. In this case, it sounds like he was not "unqualified" but rather "unfit".

The institute added that big sports wins often spark a consumer mentality in the local populace, Sankei reported.

That's only because they're having sales all over the place (up to 50% in many places) so of course people are going to go and buy.

Ugh, why couldn't a blood test be taken for suspected drug use. Seems way less invasive than putting a condom catheter.

I agree with one poster who said that considering the magnitude of the earthquake and the size of the tsunami, it's a wonder that Japan wasn't more devastated. I also think that it says a lot for Japan's preparedness. Another poster was trying to "satirically" state how poorly Japan is prepared for an earthquake and tsunami, but I believe quite the opposite. This earthquake was record breaking and the tsunami was enormous. Other countries that face earthquakes with several hundred times less intensity are more devastated. I realize that there are some cases which could have been avoided, but things like that happen in disasters. Some people lose their common sense (if they had some to begin with) and make stupid decisions. I agree that had these people had the slightest amount of common sense and USED it, these tragedies could have been avoided.

It appears that most people are thinking that the boy was breaking up with the girl, but I ask, "Who broke up with who?"

The story doesn't seem to provide a clear answer as it states they were discussing a break-up. It's interesting that most people think that the boy was breaking up with the girl, but at the end of the story, it said that the girl suspected the boy of cheating on her. Doesn't that sort of make you think that she was planning to break up with him and then maybe get a bit of revenge (via the knife)? Hmm. Makes me wonder anyway.

I've seen similar shoes with different brands sell for considerably less. Not sure what the difference would be though as I haven't seen any "Keen" shoes to compare them with.

I'm glad I never had any "violent" roommates in the past. I've shared a few places with a few people who weren't all there before, but never any violent ones.

@ gogogo Because it's not just about the athleticism. It's also about the other skills, the artistry, technicality and the form. Since much of skating is also subjective, it boils down to who is judging and what they are looking for.

Most people (young) don't realize how thin the line can be. When you're young and healthy, it's easy to maintain a job if you're willing.

At 22 years old, I would tend to believe his story. He is probably just too inexperienced to realize how to deal with a toddler and frustration may have gotten the best of him. Of course that doesn't mean I condone his actions. Arresting him for attempted murder will force something to happen be it much needed counselling on how to deal with toddlers or perhaps a forced separation. Either way, I hope the child is safe.
