Oh, I misread the article! I thought it said that the form was now 4 pages, but CrazyJoe is right. It just says that the company made a 4 page guide. How is that any easier for the claimants?

@ SmithinJapan. Nice summary of the diets :-) The best (and also saddest) part is your disclaimer at the end.

Even the government is giving out really strict guidelines on what is considered overweight. It's not so long ago that I read that the government requires men's waistlines to be less than 85cm (I think?) to NOT be considered overweight. WTF? Are they kidding? I think it converts to something around a 32 inch waist or less. No other mention of size either. So a big 6 foot tall guy has the same guidelines as a 5 foot guy. Ridiculous, not to mention a bit unrealistic.

Wow....sounds like every parent's nightmare. I agree that the hospital needs to beef up it's security, but prison time? At most they are negligent. I don't see any criminal intent there.

As for the woman, she definitely needs help, hopefully before something worse happens. I'm thinking that her boyfriend might be questioning himself on whether or not he wants to remain her boyfriend.

Hm, but just because they are only 4 pages long doesn't mean they aren't complicated or difficult. The simple tax forms are generally 4 pages long and for the average person, they aren't simple or easy to figure out. The help manual is usually around 30 pages or more.

It's a sharp reminder to all that no matter who you are, you can't escape the inevitable. It's sad that such a brilliant innovator has left us so early in his life. I can only imagine what he might have done had he lived a longer life.

I can't imagine anything that would justify what those juveniles did to the mother. It's pretty sickening and saddening to hear news like this. I doubt that there are many people out there who have not had dark thoughts about their parents when they were really angry and upset, but I'm sure those thoughts are fleeting. To actually put something like that into motion is just mind blowing. Although there is no information in this story about the daughter's part in this mad scheme, I imagine that she is involved in some way (even if it she didn't endorse anything).

It's another sad day for Japan.

My sister is a chef and she often carries her knives with her as it's very personal. The normal "case" if you can call it that looks like an leather apron. You insert the knives, blade first, into a form fitting pocket. Once they are all inserted, the apron is then rolled up and then snapped shut. I can't imagine a knife cutting through the case from it's own weight and even if someone where to get jammed up against it, I don't imagine any serious injury happening. (Maybe a bruise). Of course there are cheaper cases with different material. Chefs do not normally carry knives solo wrapped in towels. You spend more than 1万 per knife, you want to protect them.

As for the laws about carrying knives, it's basically against the law to carry anything longer than 6cm with you without a valid reason. If you can convince a policeman that you're a chef, then that would suffice I believe. That's just from memory, I'm sure the law is more detailed than that. FYI, 6cm is the average size of most pocket knives. My leatherman knife is about 6.2cm I think. I carry it around and use it as a bike tool. Hopefully, I'll never be stopped and questioned as I'm not sure it would be reason enough.

It seems that this treaty is aimed more at stopping internet piracy rather than counterfeit goods.

I think that they are really trying to save a dying beast, however. Times have changed and the life of CDs, DVDs and even Blueray is coming to an end. I'm sure that medium will be around for quite some time, but the emerging technology of the internet will radically change the way people rent and watch movies and listen to music. Even read books is different with Kindle, iPad and other equipment out there.

Counterfeit is a different thing altogether though, and I don't know why they are lumping it in with piracy. Imitating a famous brand and trying to pass it off as such is different than someone just copying an original product.

It sounds like any kind of food or dish that they themselves find difficult will be impressive as long as they also enjoy the dish.

It certainly sounds like this man doesn't have his full facilities, but that doesn't mean he won't be held responsible. If the court deems him to be mentally unfit to take trial, I would like to believe that he would still be held at some sort of institution that would try to rehabilitate him.

Either way, I'm sure he's not going to just be released back into the public.

Oh, I just wanted to add that when I first read the title of this article, I thought that it would allow anyone to put an X, not just people who had their doctors said that it was okay. Perhaps this might be an option that allows for no discrimination. The only problem is that a passport is a legal document that allows authorities to know for certain who that person is. Should we really be messing around with this kind of information to make it less specific?

@ soldave: No, you can't just change your gender on your passport. You have to abide what is on your birth certificate. If you put the wrong (ie, not what is on your birth certificate) sex in, your passport will be denied.

I have to agree with a few other posters here that I wonder if this is actually not going to create more discrimination rather than allow gender ambiguous people an option. I know someone personally who was unable to travel outside her country because she was by all normal standards, a woman, but her birth certificate still states that she is a man. For her to get a passport and have it say that she is male is completely unacceptable for her, so an X option might have been a way out for her at the time.

Currently, she is now finished her operation and by law is allowed to be called a woman. So perhaps, it's for people like her that this law was created. Hm, something to think about, unless your mind is already too small to fit in other views.

This is actually a good idea I think. I would love to subscribe to certain people to see what they're thinking or have to say. As for privacy, Facebook allows you to filter who reads what in a very controlled manner. In fact, I can set up my page to allow everyone but ONE friend read my page. Or, just have a few friends read my comments but not everyone. One of the things I don't like about FB, though, is the 3rd party add ons. Often, if you want to use them, they want complete access to all your information. Uhhh, NO, thank you.

Wow, so many skeptics!! This is actually very big news! Yes, there are machines out there that already do this, but they are huge machines in a laboratory where you have to lie still. There have been many experiments in which a subject must go to a laboratory and are asked different questions or undergo simple tasks to see which area of the brain is being active. It's a very sterile and fixed environment so the use is pretty limited. With these headsets, they can study subjects with a minimum of disruption and thereby get a much more accurate idea of the area of brain which is active. My guess is that there will actually be an overload of information and deciphering it will be much more difficult than previous.

Oh wow. To think that I've lived in Japan for more than 6 years but I've yet to have any of those particular dishes. I often try many new restaurants too! I have had chicken fried rice, but it was in a Chinese restaurant.

There are still long line ups in Fukuoka at the relatively new Krispy Kreme donut shop. If they aren't giving out free donuts in line anymore I suspect it's because people leave the line after getting the donut. Many people I talk to (about the donuts) say that they only wanted one donut to begin with so when they get the free one, they are satisfied. If that's the case, they should start giving out bite sized samples instead. Also, from what I know you will only get a free donut if you have to wait in line for more than 5 minutes.

Personally, I wouldn't to wait in line for more than 5 - 10 minutes, but here in Fukuoka, I've been told that the line ups are as long as 2 hours when they first opened. The line ups didn't seem that long to begin with, so I suspect really slow service.
