It's not the fault of the quake - The so-called government continues to obfuscate facts about Fukushima, so how can anyone make an informed choice? Obviously, tourists will err on the side of caution.

It really makes one wonder exactly what it will take to rouse the Japanese population from their political coma.
Words fail trying to describe just how unfit these politicians are to "govern".

As others have mentioned, service is good in Japan, but sometimes it goes too far; the way you are immediately suggested any number of other styles/accessories/colours if you even so much as check a price tag in a clothes shop, or the way you are followed around a shop (always at a discreet, but somehow still un-nerving distance).
"Eigyou smile" Many of those people wouldn't give me the time of day in the street, but are somehow my new best friend if I enter into their shop.
Trying to return anything is subject to an inquisition.

He swam across a moat, near naked, at 4.30am, in water that would have been colder than the 4 degree air temperature, to see the Emperor... And there's a question over whether he is compos mentis?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed them, but I went by one of those posters last night that used to have Hirata on them. Where his face used to be, was written, in large kanji, "Arrested". well... yeah, but only after his 3 attempts to surrender!
I don't know about you, but that doesn't sit well with me; it sounds like the police are taking ownership of a job well done, and as we know, that's about as far from the truth as possible in this case.
It should be changed to "Surrendered" to make it factually correct.

I just wanted a simple way to let everyone I know back in my home country how I am getting on here, share a few photos, some amusing anecdotes, etc, which is just what Facebook did when I joined a few years ago. But Facebook seems intent on forcing any changes it makes on even those who won't use them, nor have any desire for them. This new Timeline thing - they'll say that you have to change as they can't support both platforms, but being as it wasn't rolled out in one go (some people have switched to it, others are holding out before having it forced upon them), they clearly can.
Any cries of "if it ain't broke..." fall on deaf ears.
Facebook has become a monster.

Just going to show yet again, that a "good" education in Japan doesn't actually equate to being smart, and certainly what is learned, is never a transferable skill.
This week we heard Tokyo Uni will change to an Autumn school year. Forget that, just close the place; it's nothing but a civil servant/Govt minister prep school anyway, and clearly can't even manage to do that very well, as we have seen time and time again.
As for Mr Watanabe's reasoning, I'm pretty sure the Govt would have secured more support by being frank and open with EVERYONE.
Posted in: The science ministry should have told the nuclear disaster task force to pass on the data to the people. But we didn't think of that.

True, Not much in the way of alternatives at the moment, but Japan really needs to stop moving the goalposts on everything, and I mean everything.

Anyone know what the options are for paying off your credit card here in Japan? From what I have seen/heard, you have a choice to pay in monthly lump sums (revolving?), but as I only want a card to make international web purchases, I'd want to pay the credit off in one lump sum, straight away; can you do that here? I know it's possible in other countries. Perhaps a debit card may be better, providing it's valid on overseas websites.

Agree with those who promote castigating idiots; I myself wherever possible will take a Keitai using/red light running/parked over the pedestrian crossing driver to task. As others have pointed out, toleration of these numbskulls just leads to the perpetuation and proliferation of the stupidity, which can often be dangerous, and is at best anti-social.
@bicultural - have seen the "not looking at you as you admonish them" on many an occasion. They are like a guilty-looking dog that you come home to after the dog has done its mess where it shouldn't. It's a classic Japanese thing; not looking at a perceived problem, hoping that it just goes away. You either get that or the hollow "suimasen". Worst of all is the embarrassed smile/chuckle that some idiots give you. Nothing surer to ramp up the anger than someone finding an admonishment amusing...
As I have said before, many Japanese won't say anything to keep the "Wa" (harmony), but it's these idiots who are throwing the Wa out of whack, and so any admonishment administered by a member of the public should be regarded as redressing that Wa.

To Tokyo Metropolitan Police Dept - if someone called and said "I am Makoto Hirata, and I want to turn myself in", that wasn't a prank call.

SHOULD, but don't. Studies have shown this. Crime does not go down by any real noticeable amount in areas with lots of CCTV; the only benefit is identification of the perpetrators is better enabled.
Besides, the idea in the article above is to help catch criminals while they continue to evade police.
