magpie, I have read the book. It is a very good read. I was merely questioning the timing of the review. The book could have been reviewed at any other time of year.

This book was printed 8 years ago. Why are you reviewing it now? Trying to find more articles to keep those August war/peace drums banging?

katsu78, very good question, but recently there has been a lot of religious stuff here. It should be noted that Mr. Baldwin's degrees are from an unaccredited university that specializes in producing ultra-conservative ministers.

Romulus, I don't know if dubya can, but the Catholic Church and other denominations do also. They also condemn IVF.
I have no problem with surrogacy or IVF. I am, however, a little concerned that in Japan it seems that it is often the grandmother who is the surrogate and wonder about future possible medical effects on the grandmother having a child late in life.

rtr, thank you for your response. I appreciate your answer. However, until the possibility that an innocent person would never be put death is removed and the system is fairly used, I will continue to be opposed to the death penalty. If you really are concerned about cost, a bullet to the back of the head is probably cheaper than the rope.

Gentlepeople,
I have been enjoying your discussion. Very interesting. Just to let you know, I am against the death penalty. In an imperfect legal system, the death penalty should not be used. There are very few cases where there is absolute proof of guilt and in a system that relies on confessions, obtained by almost any means necessary, abuse can and does run rampant. Someone asked how the people who were against the death penalty would react if it was their children or loved ones who were killed, wouldn't they want vengeance. My question is: Would you support the death penalty if your child or loved one was the person who had a committed a vicious murder/murders? Or would you beg for their lives?

Sarge,
None of the scientists said that there was 'human' life on any of these planets. Simply that the planets were super-Earths. This could lead to the discovery of some form of life. Probably not very human in appearance. If you are talking about the possibility of humans from Earth visiting, we probably won't have to worry about that for centuries or, possibly, ever. What I thought was pretty sad about this article is that it had to mention the fact that the Earth orbits the Sun in 365 days.

They are Quiverfull Christians, who believe that the will of God is completely out of the control of humans. They aren't allowed to practice any form of birth control, not even the rhythm method. Good old boy Jim Bob has run for office as a Republican but lost in the primaries. Religion run amok again.

Great job on the divorce and finding a way to make a new and difficult stage in a relationship work for all. I mean that seriously. I've always found it unbelievable how horrible people can be to each other during a divorce, especially when children are involved. You and your ex-wife's attitudes are fantastic. I'm happy for you, your ex-wife and your child.

Papa,
Wholly seconded.
I often wonder if people who advocate beating their children as discipline would like the tables turned on them. What happens if the parent gets dementia or Alzheimer's and they become childlike again, would they consider okay for their children to spank or hit them to remind them what is right or wrong?

I am quite impressed that the daughter instinctively saved the son, knowing that in this present society he was more important than she. It is a wonderful example of sororital devotion to her brother. She learned to put her brother before herself. Her parents taught her right. When I read this story, my heart swelled with respect for this young lady. I know that in this world SOCIETY will praise her. Her actions will forever be enshrined as data flying around the INTERNET.

No, that part of my post was in response to redacted's post where he quoted Stephen Douglas and made a point of showing that he was a Democrat. I simply thought that it was fitting to quote a Republican, and the man Douglas debated, to show that the attitudes that Douglas expressed 150 years ago were not held only by Democrats, but also by most whites, including the Great Emancipator. No offense was intended and my apologies if offense was taken.

I have never struck my daughter. She is 10. I have felt like hitting her, but never have. From extremely early age, she has been taught what is right and wrong and what is expected of her. She gets punished by losing privileges, such as TV, DS, playing after school, or, her least favorite, sitting on the stairs leading upstairs for varying lengths of time.
DXXJP, I too never talk down to my daughter and also use a silent five count on my fingers. She knows what happens at the end. She loses something she wants to do. What I find most interesting is that, in my experience, my daughter and her friends whose parents don't hit them are much better behaved than her friends who do get hit. As an adult, I can reason with them and explain why there are certain rules at our house that are different from the rules at their houses. I almost never have a problem with these kids. The other kids are often shown the door after repeatedly breaking our house rules and are not often welcomed back. The only thing these kids seem to respect is a smack.

After all their arguing about who is the most religious, how about a science debate between these candidates so the voters can get an idea about how they stand on scientific issues since the public already knows their views on religion?
Oh, and for redacted.
A separation of the races is the only perfect preventive of amalgamation but as an immediate separation is impossible the next best thing is to keep them apart where they are not already together. Abraham Lincoln(R-Il) June 1857.
