as for Boris...I'm living in London and am not a fan of Boris at all. My initial reaction was of annoyance as I thought he was doing his typical idiotic actions. After finding out that he had indeed cleared his (button) attire with the IOC prior to the ceremony then I take it back. No-one should complain is its OK'ed by the people who run the show.

rekishika> I do believe that democracy is is the most suitable for society to operate under BUT it is not the only way and countries should be allowed to integrate its ideals in whatever fashion/timescales it believes are suitable for it. I am always frustrated by pro-democracy preachers who blindly force their ill thought-out views onto others.
I also believe that Japan will improve in the next few decades and I have always considered Japan as the youngest democratic countries amongst the developed nations. Sometimes people get frustrated with it as they can't juxtapose its global economic status against its social system.
God knows what such people would make of China lol

The problem is that the LDP IS the Japanese political system...the only hope is that a totally new political party (young or old) springs up and forces a change within.
Freespeech>democracy a supreme value? the way you analyse Democracy is close to being like a religious cult. Don't believe Bush & Co when they talk about spreading Democracy around the world....its just a trojan horse for their political and capitalist intentions (self preserving human intentions).
Seriously, I don't hate democracy and I personally see it as the better of 2 evils (Democracy or Communism)in terms of a system for humans to live under, taking into consideration all our faults in terms of how humans abuse such systems. BUT it is not an ultimate goal that all others should follow...It is not 100% faultless and some countries and their people and culture just do not adapt well/want that way of living.
democracy does not equate to progress!

SushiSake3> I'm not a big fan of Blair and the other 3, but your support of a sweeping generalisation by Zurcronium is abit too much....each of the 4 has done good and bad, it just how you view it and what the balance is between. Having a balanced view of the world is not sticking your head in the sand, for that would be thinking that theres only right/wrong.

My wife uses virgin between JP/UK and seems to find it good value and shes typically Japanese and very picky on service. I have used ANA the last few times but thats for mileage purposes....its still better than JAL, which I find abit rubbish (the planes are in poor condition and the toilets are hardly cleaned during the flight.
..as for the fuel charge apportioned between the classes, can we get a retrospective discount on economy flights with Virgin? logic implies that they've been over charging economy passengers since day 1? (yes this is tongue in cheek)

aside from the usual side sniping that goes on in these posts of "for/against", the real issue is whether the Japanese government and the Japanese industry as a whole will ever do anything to reduce/manage mental illneses that cause such suicides. I know for one that the Japanese media don't give a monkeys about such mental illnesses and just brush such people aside onto the rubbish heap, bringing in new young fresh blood when required.
