You know, I am all for trashing brainless tarento`s, but Kurara Chibana is DEFINITELY not one of those! I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that she went to Sophia Daigaku - a pretty high-grade university, plays piano, and speaks 3 or 4 languages. She is (IMHO)beautiful, accomplished, and absolutely the role model I would select for my own daughter any day above the other idiots on TV here. Hell, I would select her as a role model for Japan itself in an instant.

Every time I hear her speak or read an interview with her she has intelligent, educated opinions on things she knows about, and also seems to know when to admit she is not an expert on something - sadly lacking with many "tarentos". I for one would be delighted to see more of her on TV.

You know, if I didn`t know better, I would swear all these awards are just a cover for promotional activity. But surely not...

What`s a parent to do? Quite honestly, the best they can with the knowlege available to them. Which in many cases here seems to be zero.

I am still angry about the time I was considered the pariah who ruined everyones day when we were supposed to go out with friends in their car for the day but I refused as we didnt have child seats for our kids. Angry, but I don`t feel guilty for a second. That was me doing the best I can for my kids. Can my husband say the same? Safety was a higher priority to me than a day at a safari park - although it came a close second ;) !

What this woman did was NEGLECT - plain and simple and NOT justifiable. Yes, I am a parent, raised three kids, never left them in a car, and the car never moved unless they had their seatbelts on.

I`m with perspective on this. I also have 3 and no way does the car move unless they are buckled up. I would never leave them alone in the car. However, I remember my mum doing this often with us when we were kids and she was also a very caring, careful mother. She would run into the post office and leave us sitting there - alongside a busy road and with no child locks or car seats in those days!

I agree that she is neglectful and shouldn`t have done it, but the fact is thousands of very caring parents do just this every day and 99.9% of the time everything is fine. I think this woman was very unlucky.

Agree with presto345. If she is not comfortable with French law and French culture - why not simply return to Morocco? Covering the entire body head to foot in western culture makes us nervous. As nervous as I am sure it would make an arab if one of us were to prance down the street in hot pants and a bikini top in their country. Most of us wouldnt dream of doing something so disrepsectful - so why shouldnt it work both ways.

My God. I have a 1 month old. My blood ran cold when I read that headline. But yes, a few questions - like, how did he get into the car so easily? Smash a window? Or just open the door? How long was she gone? And most importantly of all, why did she leave her baby alone in the first place? In a cold car in the middle of Winter?

How funny, you can`t take a pic of an ice-rink in Tokyo, and yet, people are always trying to take pics of my daughter without my permission and apparently that is totally acceptable.

Wow! I obviously look dodgy! I had a guy come to my house and ask lots of questions, although he was very polite and friendly, but it was obvious he was checking out the gaijin in the area.

I got busted for a VERY minor traffic offense just the other day, switching from one lane to another because I needed to go round the corner and stop as my baby was screaming in the back seat and I couldn`t see what the problem was so I was worried. There were no cars near me at all, so I carefully reversed about 5 metres and switched to the left hand lane. Unfortunately I did it right in front of the koban, and within seconds there was a rap rap on the window. I apologised and explained that the baby was crying and I was worried, and he waved me on without a problem after wagging a finger at me and telling me not to do it again.

The worst though, was when a crazy stressed out salaryman kicked my pram with my baby in it because I had the nerve to complain that he had just pushed in the queue in front of me. He then stood over me (big guy) threateningly whispering at me. I had the two kids with me at the time, and I was so scared so I asked the supermarket to call the police to make sure I could get home safely. They arrived and the guy told them I attacked him, ran over his foot with the pram and he thinks it might be broken (no limp, patent leather shoes without a mark on them) and the officer automatically yelled at me, making my 3 year old cry, and then arrested me!!! They took me and the kids to the police station. The policeman was all puffed out and proud of himself for nabbing the foreigner. When we arrived a lovely old guy was there who could see exactly what was going on, and told the guy who had accused me not to worry, they were checking the CCTV footage for "evidence" of my "assault". He immediately dropped all accusations against me and basically legged it and they let me go! I asked the old guy how he knew the truth and he said "Simple, what 5`4" mother with two small children in tow in her right mind would attack a guy over 6 feet with a pram with the baby in it at the time?!"

    Nice police work!

Damn! Im on this stretch of road all the time with my kids (who by the way are always in their safety seats). I agree that the chances are the kid wasnt in a proper child seat, I see it all the time. But c`mon, that really is not the point here. Something needs to be done urgently if the law allows people like this to still be driving.

Then again, a lot of things need to be addressed urgently here...

Congratulations societymike! I have a 6 week old and its our third. Right now it feels like all the babies in Tokyo are round at our house!Mediocremummy is right - it is sheer hard slog here. But you know, a lot of Japanese women are to blame too, as well as the companies that relegate them to the cellar. Thye dont complain, and they dont rock the boat. What the companies are doing is illegal, they know it, the women know it, but they won`t do anything to change it.

@Shufu - totally with you. My personal opinion is that anyone who claims natural birth is like one giant orgasm is DEFINITELY on drugs of some sort but maybe not the type an OBGYN would prescribe!!!

My daughter is starting elementary school in April, so I ahve started teaching her the importance of "stranger danger", respect for yourself and others, etc etc.

ast night she came to me and said she didn`t want to live in Japan anymore because "there are too many bad people here". It broke my heart. Whilst there are bad people the world over, how do you balance giving your kids protection with not making them feel terrified?

Can someone more scientific than me explain what the point of all this is please? I can see how knowing how old the universe is would be interesting, but how does it actually benefit us in any way? Please forgive my ignorance but I just don`t see how spending billions on this is worth it.

It was a different guy that threw his wife off the balcony last week - they had a 4 year old and a one month old. Worrying trend though...

I don`t think this author is any kind of scientist or expert, more of an activist it seems.

But my instant reaction to the title was 2500???! Japan will be long gone way before then and it`ll have nothing to do with climate change...

I have to add I was sitting waiting in a restaurant for a table the other week and there was another family there waiting too. The kids were bored and acting up a little, but nothing major - the daughter (about 6) was just not sitting upright.

Suddenly, right in front of me, the mother leaned across and literally punched her in the face! I was SO shocked! The rest of the family saw my shocked face and my sons equally horrified one (he`s 3 and saw the whole thing) and just started laughing!

The girl didn`t even react - obviously used to it - and everyone thought it was funny! So my question is: is violence against children more socially acceptable here or something?

I just said to my son in loud Japanese the equivalent of "there but for the grace of god go YOU, buddy!" and threw the mother a disgusted look and walked away. She thought that was funny too....

He wouldnt listen???! Of course he wouldnt, hes 2! So you find ways to get him to do what you need him to. Its called "parenting". And last time I checked, kicking children in the head is most definitely NOT on the list of possible options.

My husband is 37. We have 3 kids. There is no way in a gajillion years he would ever lay a finger on them, never mind a foot (other than tickling them with his toes which they seem to love!)

So I hope this animal, and anyone else who abuses children like this burns in hell.

5speedracer - I am not sure if it is attempted murder or not but I see what you are saying and have to say I agree with you. Anyone with any sense would know kicking a child in the head could kill them. And there in is the issue - does this guy actually have any sense - my guess is not.
