Whislt I have every sympathy for any good fathers who can`t see their children (or Mums too for that matter) my sympathy dies a death pretty quickly when a guy who openly admits to bashing his wife around pleads his cause.

I agree with Taiko666. Whilst the typhoon may be very bad in other parts of the country, (they seem to hit the south and west worse than here) I have been here 7 years and in all that time the storms that have hit Tokyo have been nothing more than typical British November weather.

I DO have respect for nature - I was in the 1987 hurricane that hit SE England and we lost a car, the roof and had no power or water for 4 days. 3 doors down the kids were thankfully not in their beds when the wall collapsed on them. But I don`t have respect for people who freak out, claim this is the end of the world, go out with umbrellas, or go up on roofs to inspect tiles (I suspect this has a lot to do with scary obaasan wives and juicy life insurance policies!)

I don`t mind people peddling religion because I have the strength to politely decline. But I STRONGLY object to them standing at the entrance to our subway station trying to hook my 5 year old daughter into a conversation and give her literature to "give to Mummy".

I am so deeply ingrained in my religion anyway, no-one can sway me. I am a staunch, committed kirakira-ist! We are a very small movement. I have pamphlets if anyone is interested.....!

This is just making me die laughing! After such choice scandals in politics in recent years all over the world I hardly think anyone is in a position to say that these women shouldn`t be there.

In fact, they are probably more in touch with the electorate and their problems than the overstuffed overprivileged todai grads of time gone by. Which to my mind makes them far MORE qualified to be there.

...and yet, I am constantly being told that I should let my kids walk to elementary school by themselves or in a group of kids.

I dont even think 6th graders can be asked to take responsibility for 1st graders - it is asking too much of 12 year olds to be able to watch 6 year olds. Its hard enough as an adult!

The driver is at fault for not driving defensively. He should absolutely have been driving for the conditions, NOT the speed limit. On the other hand, if the kid stepped out from between parked cars he is also at fault.

    Very sad for all.

My (Japanese) husband has just suggested compact mini-tasers in hot pink, midnight blue or silver glitter in little designer handbags!

And I thought I was the one from the aggressive culture.....!

If i did this in the UK the woman would knee me in the bollocks, head butt me then call the police while stamping on my face.

Exactly! I am a British woman. Travelled on the tube in London to work for years. NEVER heard of this issue and London trains in rush hour can be just as crowded. Not saying London isn`t more dangerous in a lot of other ways, but most people know what will happen if they try and pull this crap with one of us.

Also - there is a culture in the west for people to stand up and support other people, rather than turning a blind eye to what is going on right in front of them. That has to be a major way to stop the problem.

As I type this our 5 year old daughter is sitting wrapped up in daddys arms on the sofa munching on toast and watching TV. He is turning a blind eye to the crumbs all over the sofa (he wouldnt do that for our son!) and is pausing occasionally only to kiss the top of her head.

I look at this. And then I think about this little 4 year old and her "Daddy". It makes me sick to my stomach.

My Japanese husband told me last night that in fact many Japanese are pressuring for the government to sign the Hague Convention as well, because they have problems with their own kids being abducted by foreign spouses back to their home countries and out of Japan.

My first reaction was "what is wrong with these kids?" swiftly followed by "what is wrong with these parents?" If one of my children ever did something so horrific I would be so ashamed at my failure as a parent I think I would want to be locked up too.

This is nothing short of torture and attempted murder and kids as young as 10 know exactly what they are doing. I really hope they don`t get to hide behind their "minor" status. Little b#$%"#&s deserve exactly what is coming to them.

My husband and I talked about this whole issue at length when he came home last night - he hasnt seen anything about it in the J media, but said there have recently been lots of reports in the J media of kids being kidnapped OUT of Japan by foreign spouses (whaddya know).

Anyway - I told him I would NEVER do that to him and no matter what we would work something out for the kids if it ever got that bad.

At that point, our 3 year old ran into the kitchen, and tried to bite his bum while out 5 year old took a pic with her new digital camera and the two of them ran off giggling hysterically to go and hide!

He rubbed his butt cheek gingerly, turned to me with weary eyes, and said "Please kidnap them back to the UK. I will pay for the plane tickets!"

This whole thing could be avoided with two things:

    1) Japanese law needs to accept the rights of BOTH parents. Children are not assets to be divvyed up in a divorce - but this is how they are often treated.

    2) This attitude of using the kids to hit back at the other parent (and this is not specific to Japan) needs to be stopped. Again, they are not tools to be used in a battle and such behaviour needs to be punished.

I think in this case - as in a lot of cases - there is far more to it than meets the eye based on scanty news reporting. As I sit and type here it is being reported on CNN again - but not once have I heard CNN mention (at least on their verbal reports) that he is remarried, has cheated, forced Noriko into virtual imprisonment in Tennessee, or anything else. I don`t know the whole truth - neither really does any of us.

The only people who know the truth in this whole affair are the parents themselves. What a pity they aren`t grown up enough to be able to work something out for the sake of their children.

The one positive thing that can come out of all this - I really hope for the sake of everyone else out there suffering in similar situations, that this issue is now blown up and addressed at the highest levels. Because something really needs to be done.

What on earth did she say to him to not only make him walk out of the store, but then turn himself into police???!

That is one scary lady! They should link her up with the Saitama anti-groping campaign - no-one will touch another skirt on the train after she`s finished training all the women on that line!

I`m really interested in the definition of a "mother-oriented device" as opposed to any other device -

Do they have a different kind of fridge and washing machine for married women and mothers as opposed to single men/women??!

Does the machine come with a built-in voice control that yells at you "I want.../wheres my../Im bored! every time you open the door??!

I agree with Timorborder and ratpack - zero tolerance. Bullying should just not ever be acceptable in any shape or form, and teachers that support it either overtly or covertly should also be brought to task. Enough is enough. Some kids can fight back but not all of them, and they need to be protected, first and foremost by their parents.

What a shame so many parents here just don`t seem to consider it part of their role.
