Very tragic, and I honestly believe no one is at fault here. Why wouldn`t the Dad go off and fish? Maybe the mother was due to go off on a walk by herself after he came back. Maybe she had already been. Maybe they were taking it in turns to shoulder the parental responsibility and have a quiet break by themselves. Anyone with two boys (or even one boy!) will know how hard they are to keep an eye on all the time.
Neglect would have been letting the boys go off by themselves with no supervision.
Sometimes - even in Japan - a tragic accident is just that - a tragic accident.

I really hope voters are "angry and looking for change" because I am not sure how much more of the same this country can take.

I can see why a pregnant woman would want to record her (hopefully!) temporary pregnant shape as a future memory. I`m 8 months right now, and it is a strange and wonderful feeling that transcends what many people would describe as "beauty" - like your body is fulfilling a higher purpose and suddenly the short fat legs that people seem to love to point out here are just so unimportant.
On the other hand, I am hot, tired, have appalling leg cramps at times, and have to go with DarkKnghtZ and his wife on this one - that sometimes it really is no fun being a "fat chick"!
But to all the people - especially the guys - who have made constructive respectful comments about this woman and the whole idea of pregnancy - thank you! I am doing my best against the odds to look and feel as good as I can right now, and people like you are giving me hope that I am not putting poor innocent salarymen off their counter ramen as I waddle past the shop!

Obviously done intentionally by medical staff to invoke a reaction? Grievious bodily harm? That`s a pretty big leap! I think you will find it is actually pretty standard procedure in cases where they are not sure what may be going on internally. Even if it was done maliciously that would be very hard to prove. As for the humiliation - I think he has pretty much taken care of that himself...

Great ploy but what was he thinking? That they would let him go if he was dead? That he would sneak out of the mortuary under cover of darkness?
Well, if I was a doctor and I thought the patient was faking that would be the first thing I would do!

Let me guess - he was visiting Aomori on a hot tip from Adam and Eve that it was a beautiful paradise and every apple coming out of Aomori now is descended from THAT tree?
At least he had the sense to avoid Tokyo. Murder on the Birkenstocks.

I have a 5 year old. The very thought of what must have gone on that night, and what that little one went through in his last minutes makes me feel sick to my stomach.

I totally get that murders and other such violent serious crime is lower in Japan than in the rest of the world - but when it does happen here it seems to be for the most inane of reasons. At least in the UK most violent crime is about drugs or money, not the bloody TV remote!!!

I don`t think there is an age limit for fireworks in Japan (UK is 16 or maybe 18 as I remember) but I think the fireworks here are pretty wussy anyway compared to the ones we can buy at home.
I can see both sides - no harm done, but on the other hand he should have known better. Would be interested to know exactly what he set off because there is a world of difference between those puny little sparklers and a socking great rocket.

My British friend was randomly punched in the stomach at 7 months pregnant on the train. On a crowded train with many witnesses and no-one did a thing. She also had a 2 year old with her at the time. Sorry, but however much some people like to deny it these nuts ARE everywhere. (The baby was fine in the end thank god.)

Could not agree more. My "incident" was 10 years ago. You never "get over" it but you learn to live with it as part of your life, what makes you the person you are now. I am VERY aware, always very careful, and yet it happened to me. It can happen to anyone in any situation. Please Please Please be careful out there.
For anyone who is struggling to come to terms with it - it helped me to know that the experience can be used to send a positive message to other people. I never told anyone for a long time - too ashamed. Felt maybe it was my fault. But now I am happy to talk about it - if my experience prevents even one other person getting caught out it somehow makes it seem less of a bad thing and more something that was supposed to happen somehow to make me who I am now.
And once you start talking you would be amazed how frequently this happens, and how many other women - and men - are out there not talking and feeling like it is all their fault too.
I have no memory of that night either. And proof is very difficult to find because the drug metabolises so quickly, and usually the perpetrators are very careful to leave little physical evidence, plus the fact that for a long time you feel so ashamed and just thing you got too drunk and did something totally out of character - until the flashbacks start at least.

I would love it if my son was gay. I have heard from other gay friends that gay boys have great relationships with their Mums! Sorry - don
t mean to be stereotypical! But it wouldnt bother me in the slightest. The only concern I would have is the same as if he were straight - that his partner would love and respect him.Posted in: 'Gayjin' find it tough going in Tohoku

Yep - have to say kudos to the cops for taking this one seriously. This is obviously not your average "how dare she reject me!" kind of dude. Brave lady too. I`d have been terrified if I was her.

I am painfully aware of the statistics in South Africa. I lived there. Half of my family came from there. However, those statistics actually mask major cultural differences between ethnic groups which are actually off topic for the purposes of this discussion.
I stand by what I said - South African police can be brutal. As I said before, he got off far more lightly being dealt with by his company, not South African law.

Lucky for him they didn
t - in South Africa you really dont want the police "dealing" with you.No such thing in Japanese working culture. And as per my comment above, far better for him that he was dealt with through work.

I have just come back from 2 fab months back in the UK and British food is NOT bad! It was wonderful - you just have to know where to get it and how to cook it.
BurakuminDes - yes, I saw the same article - but I think it might have been a Balti you are thinking of? They are trying to get it banned from being sold elsewhere (a bit like the champagne argument of the 90`s) because it was "invented" in a particular part of Birmingham. Although I am sure there are chefs in a corner of India somewhere who would beg to differ...

hmmm....like, dare I suggest it....pain relief, for example???!
Most caesarians are not performed under general, but with an epidural, and they are statistically safer, more predictable and yes, easier for the doctors. But either way is tough, especially in Japan where they favour natural birth with no drugs. However, there is a tendency to also schedule them through request because they are so much more predictable.
I had two natural births in Japan, and next one is due in November. My best friend had two caesarians. I went through hell each time with mine (Cleo's "trivial experience" comment is SO true!) but I recovered quickly and easily. My BF is still suffering the effects of her caesars.
I think Japan actually has the birth system down to a reasonably fine art here, but I would likie to see more choice for women, especially in terms of pain relief, and low bikini line cuts instead of those awful vertical cuts.
