I have not read all the comments, but did notice where people did mention that we have four years. It is obvious that predicting earthquakes is not a pure science, but when I read the title of the article the word 'within' four years stands out. To me that means it could occur anytime. I was visiting China when the last one hit and was on an airplane coming back to Calif. after visiting the earthquake stricken area of S. California the previous day I think it was 1994 .... and only hope that I am not saying where I was if the big one hits my area some time in the future.
We just do not know, but should try to live our lives to the fullest! I certainly hope we are all fine!! I do appreciate reading most comments written here.

Wonder what a one night stay would cost and if the rooms are Best Western size or Japanese Best Western size? Anyone know?

I wonder how CNN covered this story? They sure showed the earthquake in Haiti as it was and if a dead baby laying in the corner is not graphic, then what is? If these images portray the help that was needed, then it may be justified. I missed this replay and I guess that is the choice I would have had if I had known it was be replayed but decided not to look.

It is obvious that Okada does NOT have his strongest team on the pitch. Bring back the members playing in Europe and you would probably not be seeing the results that the National team has given. That is my two yen worth. It is still early in the season and the games in S. Africa will not be played in such frigid temperatures. It seems conditioning will play a major factor and a lot of 'fighting spirit' for the Japanese to move on in the World Cup. I have no idea how much the fans are paying to see these games, but I think it would help to play a game without paying any money as it is the fans who expect only the best out of the already NOT best team.

When I first read the headline to this story, I thought the person who was asked to leave the plane, actually left by someone pushing him out of the plane. Semantics as it may seem, I truly envisioned him being pushed out of the plane. I soon realized my mistake! LOL

And was there alcohol involved? This story just does not seem to show all the factors in the father's sudden outrage nor the pain that he may have had then or down through the years with a son that apparently has brought him a lot of pain. As a parent I can't imagine doing this to my son. NEVER!

Hopefully her meaning of 'kakkoi' is that of just his appearance and not the crime he did. I guess she was his type physically and hopefully she is truly disappointed in what he did.

Seems travelers are not worried about getting the new strain of flu as there are no tickets available and travel agents have jacked up their prices again .... so hard to travel in summer in Japan ... trips are scheduled for less days paying more money ... Any hints on truly getting a good deal out of Japan?

Wow, this story had me shocked on one hand and wondering on the other. Let's assume the woman who had her things strewn across the seats in front of them in order to save the seats for her friends. In fact, I have seen that often and even at a baseball game. Reading this I got the idea that the author thought the woman was doing this to hold all the seats for herself. Surely that was not the case! I also agree that the child might have been a bit out of control for that women to suddenly slap him. Either that or she was truly deranged. I have never heard of a Japanese person slapping a child unless it was her own and I have seen that quite often. I cringe when I see it. I would think the author would have gotten plenty of warning by stares from this woman first.
I have not been to a Japanese game in years and it is sad that the child did get slapped, but why would the author continue to sit there. I would have moved in a moment for the safety of my child. This is probably what bothers me the most about this article. How could the author have stayed there. I am sure the kind people around them that decided to be nice to the boy were doing it out of embarrassment for the child being slapped by the woman.
I was picked on by an older gentleman who was drunk when I was riding an afternoon train many years ago, and after the drunk left .. the people across from me (four complete strangers from each other) bowed to me almost at the same time to apologize for the drunk who had picked on me. To date this is one of the oddest but heart-warming gestures I have ever received.

I imagine there is a lot of effort to curb crime in the military but maybe the soldiers need to be told that if they commit a crime against a Japanese, they would be put in Fuchu Prison for a period of time, lose their rank and be kicked out of the military. Wow, that might get them thinking but I think they should watch a video of Fuchu Prison to get an idea that it is not a sweet place to go to. I knew an American civilian years ago who had a rather large amount of marijuana stashed in a locker in Shinjuku. He was caught and sent to Fuchu prison. I believe he was there about a year and later sent back to the States.
Another thought is if alcohol is not often a reason that crimes are committed at all. I know I did some pretty crazy things under the influence when I was younger. Do not think they were actual crimes, but I am lucky someone did not bop me a good one the way I acted when I had one too many.
I think we could go back and forth on this subject, but there will always be an isolated case or incident that will crop up no matter what kind of discipline is enforced. This goes for people in the army as well as not military people.

I still feel that there is too much antagonism going on about China and this will cause the Olympics to be postponed and could lead into other major problems ..... So what is next?

Pressure? The guy is the real deal and pitched in the pressure cooker of Koshien Stadium. Not many ballplayers marry that young, but his future is all mapped out for him. And his kids will be adorable.
