I also parted with my AMEX Gold a few years ago due to the ridiculous fees. I hear the Platinum one costs 80,000 yen a year to have!

Your take on suicide is rather narrow-minded and obviously based on your Western-style upbringing. Suicide isn't thought of in the same way in Japan so get used to it.

The question is, "Which of your favorite movies would you absolutely NOT like to see remade?" So smartacus is saying that "My Fair Lady" wouldn't be a good remake.

If the officer saw a guy in black crouching there and looking suspicious, surely that's when the officer would draw his gun and say, "Put your hands on your head and stand up slowly" or something like that. Isn't that one of the reasons why police are armed? I could maybe understand if this happened in the UK where police don't carry guns...

I think the idea makes sense. The employee gets a good product (hopefully), and helps his or her company by doing so. If it were my company, I would be proud of my employees if they did this. If such large companies do go under, the effects on their employees and the company's suppliers is huge. So a helpful cash injection from, say, 20,000 employees spending 200,000 yen is big bickies (4 billion yen actually). In the end the money will come back to the employees in the form of annual bonuses that may not have been paid if they hadn't bought their own company's items...

One line that I heard once that seems to stick in my mind as being true in many cases is, "Women need a reason to have sex but men just need a place". I guess if both these criteria are met, then sex on the first date isn't necessarily a bad thing.....

I agree with those who think that we are all "haafu" in that we are half from our fathers and half from our mothers. Where they are from is irrelevant really. Again, it's a word we use just based on a person's looks and, like it or not, that's how humans do see one another at first. There is no way around it. Someone maybe Caucasian, Asian or African-American and that is how we would describe that person. What simpler term could there be to describe someone who looks both Caucasian and Asian? If you can come up with a better word than "half", I'm all ears.

People are generally curious and asking questions like, "Are you haafu?" seem natural to many in Japan. Just like in other countries where people might ask a person with an Asian background, "Are you Chinese?" or "Are you Korean?" or "Are you Japanese?" or even, "Where are you from?"

Like it or not, people who grow up in similar circumstances naturally stick together and Corey above is sticking with people who "understand" him. Is it any different that he could relate to his newly-found "haafu" friends than if an Indian relates to another Indian or an Israeli relates to an Israeli or a gay person relates to another gay person or a Muslim relates to another Muslim and so on?

But it is the next step that is important. Crossing all those barriers of upbringing, culture, religion, colour and so on. Those Caucasians who do have parties at home or go out with people from other cultures and vice versa. Learning about one another and our differences and similarities. It's just a bit sad because we don't have enough time in our lifetimes to learn as much as me may hope.

There was an amount agreed upon ($2 billion) and Japan is keeping that promise. All developed countries give money to developing countries even though the developed countries themselves aren't always in good shape. That's the way it is. Budgets are planned, implemented and, ideally, stuck to. The bottom line is that money does help and Japan is still in much better shape than Afghanistan, right? I hope so anyway...!

I think tkoind2 is right on the money. The eye-for-an-eye supporters are showing their simple ideas on life and death. It's much harder to be an anti-death penalty supporter but, when one really thinks deeply about it, it really is the only way. It shows we are advancing as a civilization. Retribution and vengeance are for those who can't handle the more difficult way. Just for the record, I am not religious at all.

I also believe that it is the parents' decision. Hopefully they would agree but, if not, I think the mother should have the final say. It is her body and she is the one who has to undergo what I can only imagine is a very unpleasant and uncomfortable procedure. Also risking the possibility of not being able to conceive again. I don't think there are many women who have had numerous abortions so it certainly isn't some sort of generally accepted form of contraception.
