Pachinko parlours are taxed and the government would never shut them down because the owners pay vast sums in tax. The machines record all money put through them so it is difficult to under-declare the revenue. But so much money goes through the machines, the owners still make enough after taxes. But the owners' costs are high too. One machine costs up to 500,000 yen and they have to change all the machines every 3 months or so in order to have the latest models to attract customers. Most parlours have hundreds of machines. Do the math there. It's big bickies. My good friend, who is Korean-Japanese and whose father runs a parlour, remembers young tattooed yakuza guys washing his father's back at the local bathhouse.

Not interested in trying it and not interested in posting online what I have done recently or am doing now, even for family and friends. Email is fine for that. Definitely not interested in putting up pictures of myself either. If I want to show family members photos, I'd rather just email them. I also spend too much time on ebay so that may have something to do with it!

I recall you were waffling on about the "White Family" thing before. I personally know three African-Americans with the family name "White", just as there are thousands of Caucasians around the world with the family name "Black".
It isn't a big deal at all.

It isn't strange at all that Japan has detained the captain of the ship for supposedly ramming a Japanese vessel. Seem to recall China has done the same thing before with ships and even with US aircraft. China is embarrassing herself by using this currently minor incident as an excuse to pull out of other talks that are totally unrelated. Typical.
I read this interesting quote today:
"When the leaders express condemnation, it means that you're allowed to express condemnation," wrote Han Han, perhaps the world's most popular blogger, in a post that was mostly deleted from the internet. "When the leaders express regret, it means your time for expressing condemnation is over."

The companies were ordered to do so by the mitiary government so, as Tenney mentions, it is basically the government of the time who are to blame.

Fifty followers isn't exactly a large group of people in the United States. It's a pity that a man of the cloth (if he can be called that) wants to try and stir up emotions by burning things that others respect and thus creating more tension. But, as someone wrote above, we'd probably all be better off without religion. Buddhism is the only one I can think of that doesn't seem to espouse violence. Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism are all messed up in their own ways. I believe in me!

A friend of mine absolutely believes in homeopathy as it completely got rid of her 5-year-old daughter's severe atopic dermatitis when nothing else worked. It is quite interesting to read about homeopathy and how it was developed in the 18th century by a German physician. A couple of thousand different kinds of pills, all from plants like most medicine, for all kinds of ailments. Apparently safe for children, pregant women and the elderly too, with no possibility of overdosing. Like those Bose noise-cancelling headphones, or vaccinations that contain some of the bad stuff to make the body resistant, homeopathy works on the same principle as far as I know.

There aren't many movies that I can't get through all the the way to the end but "The Brothers Grimm" was one. "Oh, Brother" with George Clooney was another (although I usually like his movies). But my all time worst would have to be one of those flicks from the 80s like "Revenge of the Killer Tomatoes" (even though it was so bad that it was funny).

Well, how about prison as would be the case in a country with some sort of civilized legal system? I'm sure Saudi prisons are not fun places to be in. As I re-read the article, the part that reads "Those who are sentenced to death are often not informed of the progress of legal proceedings against them or of the date of execution until the morning on which they are taken out and beheaded. Crucifying the headless body in a public place...." is also extremely worrying. Funny how the West is much quieter regarding human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia. Wouldn't have anything to do with oil, would it? hmmm.

It's disgraceful in this age of technology and advanced civilization (well, one hopes we are) that such primitive punishments are considered. Unbelievable. I would be ashamed if my country discussed such punishments even as a remote possibility. Gandhi couldn't have been more correct when he said that an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Regarding Islamic law, the Saudis are living in medieval times. Also, doctors take the Hippocratic Oath and swear to help people, not intentionally paralyze them.

If only more people were more interested in actually learning more about other religions and cultures. The first reaction by most is to reject such a building, mainly because they don't actually understand what it is and why it may be important to some people. More exchanges between countries are necessary. More study abroard programs. More foreign language study. More homestays in the Middle East and so on. That is how this unfortunate, but understandable, lack of knowledge about one another continues generation after generation.

I agree with you. It is only natural that the US education system paints the US in a positive light. As you say only very few seem to know the truth but many of those who hear the truth don't want to believe it because it is too shocking for them and goes against everything they learned so far in their lives.
As for Japan Today's question above, I think there should be a separate day to remember other atrocities that were committed by Japan in her colonizing quest for more territory and resources.

Some say the Listerine regular mouthwash actually makes bad breath worse because it kills both good and bad bacteria in the mouth, thus making the mouth produce more of both.
Also, it is said that if you brush correctly, you don't actually need to use toothpaste. Toothpaste just gives your mouth a nice taste.
