I hear that the radio stations that the troops listen to (like VoA and AFN etc) are largely there to help make the soldiers believe they are doing a useful and important job in Japan. This is understandable of course, however, it is really just a from of propaganda. The problem is that when people are told they are unwanted and unnecessary, it is somewhat depressing for them. But the reality is that the new government sees them this way and with new goverments comes new policies. It's the same the world over.

Point taken but there seems to be this common misconception that if the U.S. left, Japan would be very vulnerable and the possibilities of outside threats to Japan would increase but I think they would actually decrease. Do you deny the fact that there is a U.S. propaganda machine that manifests itself through the media? All countries have one but, of course, some are stronger than others.

I agree that this supposed "threat" from China or North Korea is very overrated. The U.S. propaganda machines would have us believe that Japan would be in serious danger of being attacked. I don't buy it. The U.S. military needs to justify its position so, of course, keeps pushing and selling this idea. I ask, when has China or Korea actually attacked another nation? The last time I can think of are the Mongol Invasions of the 13th century. It is very likely that the removal of the U.S. presence here would actually ease tensions between China, Japan and the Koreas. Those who keep on waffling about Japan and WWII need to realize that that argument is, like the validity and creditability of the U.S. bases here, becoming stale and irrelevant. Sixty-five years is a very long time and the time for change is here. I hope the U.S. military people stationed here can return to the U.S. and do more useful work in that neighbourhood.

What a waste of money. Glad the new government has the guts to rethink this whole issue. Change is uncomfortable for some but necessary.

They made US$10 billion profit a couple of years ago in a single year and almost as much in other years recently so they still have a bit of cash to cover these costs. Not pretty for them but they will survive.

Of course peoples' first reaction is to blame the mother and wonder how someone could do it. But the point is that we can never be that mother so of course we can't understand why. Yes, it's sad but happens in every country and it is still relatively rare in a country of 127,000,000 people. Sadder is the fact that 30,000 children under the age of 5 die EVERY DAY in the world (that's 1,250 EVERY HOUR). That is truly sad. I empathize with the mother and I hope the baby boy never managed to breathe on his own which may well be the case.

Rather than an annual "Day of Conception", how about a weekly one? Or even a daily "Hour of Conception"?!! I will do my best.

The Ady Gil is 18 tonnes and the Shonan Maru 2 that hit her is 1000 tonnes. Surely the Ady Gil would be more manoeuvrable than the bigger ship. I'd say the Ady Gil got a bit too close for comfort once too often and it certainly wasn't stationary as they claimed. So, based on the video footage I'd have to say the Ady Gil was in the wrong (and I'm neither a whale meat eater nor a fan of whaling).

Dream on! It's laughable and sad that there are still many who think China or Korea (North or South) would attack Japan as soon as the US troops pulled out of Japan. Have China or Korea ever attacked another sovereign state without provocation? I don't think so. 60 years is a long time to hold a big enough grudge to warrant military action. Japan has learned her lesson from getting too militarized and wanting to colonize other countries.
Yes, the US bases create jobs but they also create a very uncomfortable climate for so many, and actually put pressure on other countries to build up their own arms supplies. Surely the goal should be to have no US troops here. It must be possible to achieve and any steps in this direction should be welcomed by all. I hope those who feel the US presence in Japan is absolutely vital can begin to realize that it may not be the case at all. Scary as it may be for some who would then have to question their own purpose here.

The age difference between the her two children is very small (just 16 months it seems) and that would be tougher for some to handle than others, especially without help. So the father lived separately from them but pops over for visits when he wants to? Or did he live separately because of work? We don't know but it was obviously too much for the wife to manage two little kids without, one can only assume, any help.

It may turn out that the one, single news service that continues to offer free access will be a huge winner. All the others would probably lose a large chunk of readers. I would search for free news and I'm sure it will be found.

Contrary to some comments above, I think the food and beverage prices in Japan haven't gone up much at all in the past 15 years. I always find Australia expensive when I visit. If you are taking your overseas family or friends to posh steak or deluxe sushi restaurants and so on then, yes, Japan will be pricey. But to be able to buy a lunch box here for 500 yen (sometimes cheaper if you hunt around) is amazing. I think you couldn't buy a reasonable sandwich in Oz for less than the same price. For cost performance and stomach satisfaction I'd take the bento anyday. A can of beer for 217 yen at a supermarket or convenience store is also very reasonable. Fruit isn't especially cheap here in Japan but mandarins, kiwi fruit and bananas aren't expensive. Cherries, strawberries and apples are a bit more pricey. As for the request above for English in the supermarkets, I guess the suburban ones just don't have the volume of overseas customers to justify it. The international supermarkets like Kinokuniya etc. have English but you need to pay for it!

This seems to be a case of Islamic leaders hoping to "protect" their religion by making it a punishable offense to criticize Islam. Losing followers means losing power and, like other religions, they are afraid of that. It is offensive to think that such a "blasphemy ban" could make it to the U.N. for debate. How many have been murdered throughout history for this so-called sin? It is shocking, ridiculous and it still happens in the world of Islam. Let's hope the evolution and enlightenment of the human race continues in a positive direction. We are learning, aren't we? Surely such a ban would fly in the face of the U.N. charter of protecting free speech. As technology and comunication has become so advanced and fast, religions (and not only Islam) will continue to lose their relevance in the world today.
