What's the relevance of this comment in the article?:

"You want two kids? Well forget about it—you need to either be rich or living out on a farm under the same roof as your parents and your foreign wife (statistically an Asian wife, if you’re a farmer boy)."

It Lloyd suggesting that the majority of farmers in Japan have wives from Asian countries other than Japan? That's a new one.

Have to comment on your Japan Post (Office) criticism. Name another country where you can pick up or send mail 24 hours a day. Or just call your post office to redeliver something within a few hours. That is real service. I don't mind if there is "one fat guy behind the counter counting something" if they can continue offering such service.

How do you know "...the woman had some sense when she conceived"? That is pure speculation. Well, I speculate that she couldn't afford to have an abortion so she delivered the baby when he was ready to be born. Babies don't all start breathing by themselves when born and, as the article says, died before breathing on his own. Yes it is terrible, but again, if we all sentence people based on three little paragraphs in the media, that doesn't really help at all.

Maybe the father kicked her out of his place in December last year when she found out she was pregnant. Or maybe she was raped by another person living in the park. So many maybes makes it hard to pass judgement on her yet as many like to do. It would be hard to get a lot of help if you're living in a park and have no friends or family willing to help out.

About 100 years ago it would have been the norm in numerous countries. These days, I guess some countries in the Middle East and Africa with monarchs would have similar laws.

love how you use the plus sign to try to explain Eurasian (European plus Asian) etc.!

    1 and 1 = 2 or

    1/2 and 1/2 = 1?

i.e. half European plus half Asian = Eurasian?

Or are the percentages different perhaps? Couldn't be 60/40 could it?

    No?

    50/50 maybe?

    Oh....half.

    Get over it!

I reckon "mixed" sounds even worse! It definitely sounds like it describes some doggies. "Mixed" has a kind of "mixed up" feel to it... e.g. the results got mixed. It almost implies a mistake of some sort!

Can you name a country that doesn't think it is better than every other country?

Wow, this topic always brings out everyone! Someone mentioned a few weeks ago on a similar topic that we are actually all "half", aren't we? Half Mum and half Dad. No matter where they came from. My daughter is officially "haafu" but hearing the term doesn't really bother me. I don't think the term is going to go away so get over it. It's a bit like those who think the term "gaijin" is derogatory. Maybe it is, but that's how it is. There are many more important things to fester about!

Regarding the article, I assume the loud scream was from the girl who fell/jumped? Do people usually scream whem jumping to their death? I guess some might but it would seem a bit strange. Perhaps she was thrown.

englishteacher: being bullied at 5 years old is better than at a later age I think because kids can generally get over such things at a younger age. Having said that, I still think you should try to talk to the teachers and/or principal. Keep track of the dates and times you talk to them and, if nothing is done and nothing changes, you can report the kindergarten to the Ministry of Education. I am sure there is a way. Bullying is bad publicity for schools and kindergartens.

Moderator: Readers, please do not focus the discussion on bullying as there is no suggestion that the girl was bullied.

The United States becomes the Untied States. How about reassigning just a little bit of the military/defense spending budget to healthcare? Everyone in the U.S. could have free (or at least very cheap) healthcare before too long...

Exactly that. Because it is what we do internally that makes us individuals. The external bits that you are talking about just make people show that they are part of a group.

I'm with you tokyokawasaki. Look at the problems religions cause...including this one! How dare people decide their children are (or are going to be) Catholic, Muslim, Jewish or Christian before the children know what it means. Strict rules about what one can wear and what one can eat are also ridiculous if penalties can include physical abuse. Long live cool biz and I hope there'll be a version of this for religions too someday! I think people should do their best not to wear anything that tells others in a sort of strong way his or her religion (or nationality for that matter. Little flags on lapels also irritate me.....)

Indeed a tragic thing to read about. The method used being so .....what's the word?.....primitive and planned. Just imagine the father (one would assume it was him) tying the knots for the three nooses. (If all three were murdered by another person then I take it back). If all three had been shot it would somehow seem more believable...and less brutal in a way. Not that I support gun ownership in any way but if it really is a murder-suicide, it would have to be one of the most shocking examples anywhere.

The Japanese are generally more closed than Westerners about all personal relationships whether heterosexual or homosexual. Gay relationships occurred amongst samurai a lot more than one might think. Sumo wrestlers too. Anyway, I agree that the writer does seem somewhat ignorant. That Tohoku doesn't have a large gay bar scene isn't really surprising. It's probably mostly due to the fact that such bars wouldn't have a large enough clientele to make enough profit. Comparing Tohoku to Kansai or Kanto is ridiculous when you look at the population difference.

Amazing all the "experts" here commenting without even having read this 128-page book! Who knows? Maybe after having read it, we'll find out that it is just a tongue-in-cheek work. Or that the author does actually have a case.

    Not a very exciting pic.

Shouldn't the title read, "A man watches his child watching a woman being watched by her chihuahuas as she picks up their doggie doo in Ginza"?
