One reason that human civilisation can be considered to have "improved" over the past few thousand years is that we don't always kill a person who has killed others. I feel that those who support the death penalty really have a simple view of the world and can't really handle considering other options. It will, however, be hard to abolish the death penalty in Japan because there is a long history of vengeance here. But, at the end of the day, the death penalty really is an easy way out. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "Just try and stay at home for 48 or even 72 hours and see how bored you get". That's at home with a fridge, computer, TV, private bathroom and comfortable bed. Just imagine what a week would be like...and then a month... and then a year and so on. That really is punishment in my book.

The only rather large problem that Nissan is cleverly avoiding is where all the electric power come from to charge these new cars. Oh, power stations fuelled by coal or nuclear power! So zero emissions from the cars themselves, but a lot more emissions from the power stations. Any experts out there care to tell us if that is actually better or not?

The simple people who say "honey is honey" and "rice is rice" and "wine is wine" live in a narrow little world. There are multitudes of all types of living things or things derived from living things. From "natto" to "sake" to "edamame" to "eggs", there are varieties that we don't even know about. The problem is that very few get to savour them all.

Maybe the boy was aware of the under 14 rule and thought he'd better act. But, based on the brief details above, it sounds like it was a serious father-son issue. I doubt he's going to turn into a serial killer.

As much as I love the bullet trains here in Japan and have always wondered why larger countries don't take advantage of such systems (imagine Sydney to Melbourne in 3 hours, not the current 9 hours!), it's a pity that it takes oil to generate a lot of the electricity needed to power the trains. So, on the one hand, the trains run clean but the power stations run dirty..... Still, I guess it's better than millions more cars on the roads.

I have a theory about the longevity of Japanese people. I've always wondered why it is one of the longest in the world when there are so many smokers and drinkers here. So I think it must be a combination of eating a lot of fish and rice (which many still do although I agree that fast food is putting up a good fight) as well as taking a bath every night. There is something about a Japanese-style bath (i.e. just sitting in the water after having soaped up elsewhere) that seems to cleanse deeply. The sweat you sweat is a good kind of sweat. Hard to get used to but once you do, you never go back. I am starting to understand why Japanese people always say that the main thing they miss about Japan is taking a bath (and eating nice sushi) when they travel abroad. Finally, the four distinct seasons in Japan also toughen the body up, I reckon... A cold winter and a hot, sticky summer mixed in with a rainy season. All the ingredients of a long life.

Criticizing someome you have just read ten lines about and have never met is rather stupid. Obviously the woman had mental issues and thought this was the only way out. I guess it is hard for anyone else to understand if they haven't been there but, then again, none of us can live anyone else's life so don't be too quick to judge. Some of the comments made above make me more worried about the human race than what this woman did!

Have to agree that it's a shocking translation. If someone forces someone else to stick a gun in his/her mouth and pull the trigger, is it forced suicide?! I think not but I wonder if it will become a new form of defense in court for such murders!
"Yes, your honor, he pulled the trigger....I didn't"
Anyway, in this case, there is no such thing as forcing a young kid of 3 or 4 years old to commit suicide. It's a very cruel murder, pure and simple. At least the title says "Murder-suicide".

Hey, if that's the kind of life you grew up with then that becomes the norm. For us "typical" people it's hard to fathom but it's all about your upbringing and way of life. Not so different from ridiculously wealthy movie stars or sportspeople, except that these were just very rich people who weren't famous.

Why would a mainland invasion have been necessary when Japan had almost no ships or planes left that could inflict any serious damage abroad? They may have wanted to fight to the end if there was indeed a mainland invasion, but, the point again being that such an invasion would have been unnnecessary.

My point was that the conscription of women and children was hardly going to have any impact on the outcome of the war and certainly shouldn't have contributed to the supposed justification of bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Moreover, conscripting women and children is completely different from indiscriminately killing women and children with bombs, isn't it?

Can you tell us of any documented cases of Japanese women or children attacking (let alone killing) Allied soldiers or civilians during the war?

What an achievement. Killing 40,000 mostly non-combatants in one hit and then another 35,000 later from the after-effects. Don't think I'd be too proud of that.

Yes, the Japanese were cruel to captured prisoners and others on a person-to-person basis but these bombs were even crueler because they didn't discriminate between soldiers or women or children. Can you really call that a legitimate method in war? I say that both bombs were unnecessary and the U.S. mainland itself wasn't under any real threat. Is a single Japanese soldier who is ordered to kill captured soldiers any different from a U.S. pilot who is ordered to kill a lot more innocent people?
