These guys don't make a lot of money. I have known a few guys that played in it. A good deal might be $2000 a month with free housing. So it is possible he did it for extra money. Or he could just be a big weed head stocking up for himself and a few friends.

The selection is limited but it is a new service. Plus all the content has to be either japanese subbed or dubbed which takes times. They also probably have to be release through regular means before it is available. American tv shows that air on cable are usually a couple of seasons behind. The service isn't really for expats.

Umm, where does it say that he pleaded guilty in a civilian court. Article clearly states he told a federal judge. I know a major hacker who had to go to that same court for bringing the Internet down
