A lay judge in Japan actually means a juror in the West. Her case does not have weight for her to be awarded financial compensation since she was forewarned about the murder case and what it ensued.

There is nothing wrong with living with your parents. I know of several Japanese friends -- male and female -- all independent financially who moved back home to help take care of their elderly parents. They are not maladjusted or pathetic in anyway as some portray such people to be. For this person who killed his 83-year-old mother, that is a different matter. Don't paint those living with their parents with one broad stroke of the brush. There are those who love and cherish their parents, who take them on overseas trips and so on. Just sayin'.

Glad my company years ago started an office policy ending this Valentine's Day practice. The women were relieved as they didn't want to waste their money on giving their awful bosses expensive chocolates.

Totally agree that this should not paint Guam as a dangerous destination. Loved it there and the people. By the way, Guam is not a NATION as this story implies. I hope that Japanese will not shun Guam as a tourist destination because of this tragedy but . . .

For many of those living in Tohoku and Hokkaido where heavy snowfall is part of life, so is the way they rid the snow off their rooftops. Unfortunately, the elderly probably live alone with no children to help them and thus need to do the chores on their own. Maybe no one will to do the work for them.

I was in a hospital for almost two months for a severe virus and the nurses were the best ever. It felt like I was in a hotel because they were courteous, hospitable and showed care in doing their job. They went beyond the call of duty. Totally different from what I experienced when I was hospitalized in the U.S.

How about her punishment be that she stays in a car with windows up, no water and no air conditioning in mid-day outside for three hours? I'm sure she'd enjoy that too.
