    Doesn't anyone find it obscene that the guy with the most money wins? shouldn't there be some sort of legislation that gives each candidate equal airtime and advertising space and no more than that?

    Agreed - The system is really messed up. Money should be mostly removed from the equation.

    In what universe is a declaration ("Universal Declaration of Human Rights") an "important law [ legal ] body"?

    OK I'll repost it with minor correction for the over-sensitive sematicists out there. I dont think the substance of my post - which you ignore - changes at all. But enjoy your LOL.

    But he doesn't like the military tribunals that have been set up for the detainees however the Nuremburg trials were military tribunals.

    The Nuremberg trials became the basis of several important law ****CODES**** including the Geneva Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The current kangaroo-court "trials" regarding US WoT detainees are a embarrassment to patriotic americans, an affront to the US Constitution, and a source of deep disgust in other democracies. And the SCOTUS has now agreed with this view (albeit slowly).

    Both of the above trials may liguistically fall under the definition of "military tribunal" but that is basically all they have in common. There is no comparison to be made. Your point is ..... um .... moot.

    Here - Ill spell it out further for the logic-challenged. Carrots and potatos are both "vegetables". But they are not the same.

    Inconsistent?

    Agreed. The sad thing is that a golden opportunity to do so was turned down. I dont mean the bungled Tora Bora incident. Afghanistan offered to give him up soon after 9/11 and the WH idiots refused.

    Of course he did. Along with so many american voters and vets and unfortunate enlisted who were forced via stop-gap to participate. He also opposed the whole "plan" cough cough to invade and occupy (illegally mind you) back in 2002. Its just one more of the many ways that he is far more qualified candidate than McSame - who has consistently carried water for the war liars. Even after they slandered his war hero status in 2004.

    I mean....wtf ? These GOP guys would eat their own young if no one was looking.

    LOL. Wrong analysis dude! The thread is actually about Obama's reasonable comments which signal the possibility that the US may actually be on the cusp of having an administration that can effectively use diplomacy, adhere to basic legal principles, and in so doing decrease threat of terrorism ... rather than increasing it and participating in it as the current square peg in the WH has.

    he said the Nuremberg trials for the prosecution of Nazi leaders are an inspiration because the victors acted to advance universal principles and set a tone for the creation of an international order.

    Its shocking to hear any mention at all of principles of Nuremberg trials in US mainstream political discussion. It would be a huge step forward if US started reasonably adhering to the standards defined in those trials. Interesting times ahead if Obama wins presidency.

    Face it - McSame is doomed. The writing is all over the wall. He cant even emit a coherent statement about ending this occupation fiasco (“…the timing of their return is not that important”). He is completely out of touch with what the US public wants and needs right now. His POW credential adds little to his presidential credentials, if anything.

    The US needs something new. No - Obama is not 100% optimal (what candidate ever truly is?), but Obama was critical of the war back in 2002 - so Obama is the candidate with the most credibility on the topic. (Ron Paul and Kucinich had even more credibility on Iraq issue than Obama at the time they were still candidates, but.....)

    Iraq is the key issue of this election. Maybe Obama can take the McSame’s challenge and go to Iraq and actually say something coherent about the troops returning home and the US getting the hell out of that quagmire. The troops there certainly deserve it at this point.

    Yes in this case its difficult to get beyond the emotional context. But what if there was some significant ambiguity about the case against an "unrepentant mass murder"? Perhaps one of the infamous "confessions" under dubious circumstances from the Japanese police as the key evidence? Would you still be screaming for the death penalty?

    The death penalty is no advance. 'Twas sarcasm - Fair dinkum. Perhaps I should have posted an official sarcasm label on my post?

    I know it will be an unpopular view on this thread about such an uncontroversial case (in terms of evidence and conviction) - but I dont believe any state has the right to take a person's life. Including Japan. Including US, etc...
