dpurcell84: These people mean business. They are ruthless, cruel and despicable forms of life. If we try and fight them with kid gloves (AKA the US Justice System), we will loose.

Fighting people -- torturing people. Two COMPLETELY different things. We are not handing anyone rubber bullets to fight with.

Age of consent is 16 in many states. This rule should at least match that.

And nobody has a leg to stand on against this except for a complete objection to the pill at any age. If she needs the morning after pill at 16 or 17, then you already failed to instill your values in her. Punishing her with a pregnancy or abortion is just hillybilly stupid. Its sort of like telling your teen daughter that she most certainly cannot use the car tonight, and ripping out the airbag and seatbelts, because leaving them there would just encourage her. Then when she steals the car, has an accident and bashes her brains out on the windshield, you declare that it serves her right. Get a grip. The punishment does not fit the act, except in the way of cruel Mother Nature, who we now have the power to defy.

Of course the other fun option is if she was raped. She might not exactly feel like telling papa what happened next morning. It might take a whole week for her to build up the courage. Too late. That means you either get to pay for an abortion or help raise a rapist's child. Again, hillbilly stupid.

Helter_Skelter: There's an appeaser in the White House now.

You don't even know the definition of the word "appease"!

    Seriously LFR, who's looking silly.

You. And you would look even sillier if you tried to define "appease" on your own (without doing a cut and paste or looking it up), and then tried to relate that to anything Obama has said or done.

LFRA, you not a student of history are you? Poor little Cuba, the island paradise that once hosted nuclear weapons aimed at the USA.

What, 45 years ago? The history is hardly relevant to today. Besides, the Cuban Missile Crisis was a DIRECT result of American aggression, not the other way around. Ever heard of the Bay of Pigs? The U.S. Congress's authorization for the use of force against Cuba? (quite similar to the more recent one against Iraq which resulted in, whodathunkit, an invasion of Iraq!)

And with Putin seeing a weak appeasing US president in the white house we would never think they might try it again would thay?

You could afford to spend less time in history textbooks despite your lapses there, and perhaps get a little more updated to today. The Soviet Union collapsed, Russian relations with Cuba are not what they were, Cuba no longer feels imminent threat from the U.S. (and I cannot tell you what a WHOPPER of a difference it makes when someone DOES NOT feel threatened. They are really less inclined to plant other country's nukes on their soil. Really.)

I mean just cause they started landing strategic bombers in S. America already means nothing to such an astute study of history such as yourself does it?

I cannot comment on this except to say that it takes two to tango. Even if that is true is some sort of real threat, we are far better off patching up relations with Cuba a.s.a.p. instead of continuing this bad joke of trying to destroy them by ignoring them. Anything we can do to prevent Cuba from joining into such a scheme as that is welcome. It might not work. But guess what? Staying the course will DEFINITELY fail.

And if this is true, I might remind you of three things: 1)The U.S. outspends Russia on defense by 6 times easy. 2) MAD is still in effect and 3) The U.S. has troops, bombers, tanks, you name it on three sides of Russia right now, a lot closer to Russia than S. America is to the U.S. So buck up little buddy and stop quaking in your boots so much about events a very long isthmus and a whole continent away.

    Unresolved debate: Does torture work?

Unresolved?? Who wrote this? Of course its been resolved! Its just that the Dick Cheney's of this world keep thinking they have discovered something new over all the experts but don't realize its impossible, because all the Dick Cheney's are idiots.

You could torture people like those, and demand they accept the fact that torture does not work. You torture them until they say the words "Torture does not work." at least one hundred times. Then they go home and tell everybody how torture works! Idiots.

Then you have the ones that really don't care if it works or not. They just like doing it. Look at Abu Ghraib.

Torture is for idiots and sadists. And this has been resolved for a long time.

Why were they using rope ? An S&M thing ?

Do you imagine that no one has escaped when handcuffs were used?

Usually when I see cops with a suspect or prisoner, they have a rope attached to him like a leash. Seems smart to me. Even a handcuffed guy cant get away from you, but no solution is perfect.

But, yes, I think it is an S&M thing too frankly. But its has good points. For example, its cost effective.

LFRAgain: How the hell do you wage a war and cut taxes?

    1) Make sure you are a rich government pulling in a LOT of money regardless. -- U.S Gov. Check 2) Wage war against a small country. It keeps the costs down-- Iraq is small. Check 3) Leave the infrastructure intact. Or, if you bomb it all out, don't pay to rebuild. -- Fail. And the American people were not paying attention as it all got bombed and, mysteriously, Halliburton got the lion's share of rebuilding contracts. 4) Secure oil wells and use them to pay for the war.-- Fail. Instead, the Bush Admin capped those wells so they and pals could sell oil to the military and soak up our tax money. Never mind what Wolfawitz said. He was somewhat correct in the statement, but they did not do that. 5) Pay a reasonable price for things, such as paper plates. -- Fail. We were charged too much for everything. Halliburton sold the military paper plates for $10 U.S. a piece. I don't even want to think what their rebuilding contracts cost us.

Holding up a few Serbs as an example of over-all typical European behavior and attitude is like holding up Rodney King as an example of typical American behavior and attitude.

Nobody but the Serbs are defending those Serbs.

    EPIC FAIL. Again.

Sorry DeepAir65, I guess you did read the article. I should have read the bit you quoted. My bad.

Anyway, I seriously doubt they talked the woman out of pressing charges, particularly after she had been beaten.

but did they talk her out of pressing charges? Why go to the police 5 times and not press charges - something smells a bit fishy

Well you are definitely on to something DeepAir. Now I give you and ESPECIALLY so many above a piece of advice: read the article.

“Since Ms Hayakawa stated that she didn’t want to make her ex-boyfriend into a criminal, we couldn’t take any further action.

That little piece there, that so many failed to read, is key to the whole God forsaken issue. Basically whining about the behavior of the cops is whining about having cops following rules. Maybe something needs to change, but there is no sense being down on the cops. They DID do all they could do. One guy even went BEYOND the call of duty and contacted the scumbag by telephone. Unfortunately, that did not help, but whether its because the scumbag is a scumbag, or the cop did it wrong, who can say? But the cop did try.

If anyone wants to complain that somebody failed it was three groups. The first was the woman herself for not pressing charges. The second was her friends for not being with her to protect her, and for not confronting the guy. The third group was her family for same.

“Mr Muse’s father’s testimony was not credible,” said Peck. “The court ruled that the defendant must be treated as an adult.”

I would take the word of the father over the eye-ball of the authorities any day.

No reason to get all vengeful on this teen or make some sort of an example of him. Three of his buddies got shot dead. Statement made. If a birth certificate or some sort of other evidence cannot be found, try him as a teen.

The incident was highly unusual because the unarmed, all-American crew fought

Unarmed eh? Then what is this about:

His left hand was heavily bandaged with white gauze, the result of an injury sustained aboard the Maersk Alabama when a U.S. crewmember stabbed him during a struggle for control of the freighter.

Maybe lightly armed would be a better description. I don't envy a man with a knife facing AK-47s, but a knife is still a weapon.

womanforwomen: likeitis, what do you really mean by this? Are you sympathising with this character?

Well, maybe if you read my post you would understand. What I meant by that is that that is the general viewpoint in Japan, and that explains why this sort of thing might be more common here.

The women here foolishly exhibit everything.

Foolishly? Look, you can practice your own brand of prudishness all you like, and think yourself extremely clever for doing so. But leave Japanese women alone. They are not bothing you, nor do I find them to be foolish at all. What I find them to be is not nearly as selfish as some women when it comes to relations with men. That may equate to foolishness to you, but I find it nice and refreshing. And I do not think I am alone, so I think Japanese women benefit for it. Which brings into question who the real fools are.

No one was hurt by his illegal hobby? You have to be a woman to know what it feels like when someone touches you when you really do not expect it.

Again, read the post. His hobby was collecting the clothes. I decried grabbing people as the part we need to be most concerned about and separated that from the hobby. But no, you don't really need to be a woman to know, but I can agree that it certainly helps. For than, I am most glad he was stopped. The stealing also had to be stopped, but I see no reason to get overly upset about it.

JoeBigs: Japan needs a few Carriers to end the Chinese threat.

Although your use of the term "threat" is correct in the sense that China will have new offensive capability, it is still an unfortunate term that some might find to be politically motivated.

You should simply be saying that Japan needs to match the Chinese, and leave the misconception that the Chinese are threatening Japan out of it. Japan's self defense build-up is quite adequate. And with Japan stationing the U.S. military, the number one most well funded military in the world, six times more than ANYBODY ELSE and known to get involved in random wars and invade random countries, if anyone has any business feeling threatened, I think it would have to be the Chinese.

Have you suffered blunt force trauma to the head recently??? Obviously, the question of selfishness is a whole different subject from what I was addressing. I was talking about your supposition on how the kid's life is ruined.

ca1ic0cat: Originally the idea of marriage was a religious one.

You cannot prove that, so you should not present it like its fact. I am inclined to believe that marriage began as less of an idea and more of a natural state of affairs in the female mind. Then I would say it became a matter of society and government far earlier than religion. Primitive societies don't seem to always link religion and marriage, yet marriage seems to be pretty universally present.

As far as I am concerned, if two people say they are married, they are. Government permission should not be necessary. The government should just recognize the will of the people and shut up. Same for all the naysayers. Marriage is not going to grant them some super rights that is going to change the world. What do they get? Joint taxes, right to alimony, car insurance discount, hospital visitation rights, etc. Big freaking whoopdeedoo.
