Gaze into your crystal ball did you? Might as well fear a 28 year old shop lifter will go on to successfully rob Fort Knox!
The article does not even say he had any. I guess you and Wakarimasen have a crystal ball too?
Look, all red blooded males get ideas like this all over the world, and they do not need manga or porn. The difference is that Japanese males are not discouraged from them like other guys are. The solution is to have their male friends making strong statements about this sort of behavior, calling it cowardly, weak, creepy and guys who do it losers and pervs and question their manhood. Most of us got this in our teens. But I think there is not so much stigma like that in Japan. Its just a simple crime, not a complete shame.
Even so, its not really all that common. Maybe more common than other places but not epic, nothing near in proportion to the poliferation of manga and J-porn either, so blaming them is pretty silly. And no one was harmed in the pursuit of his illegal hobby, so why so worried about it?
Far more worrisome is his robbery and assault of the woman. While it is possible he might escalate further, at 28 I think its kind of unlikely. But just the continuation of that sort of behavior is worrisome enough. I am glad he was caught for those reasons.

No doubt society WILL change. But you said "it will have to change". I got a completely different nuance from that.
Homosexuality and homosexual pairing have been with us for so long, I cannot say that it is not normal. What it isn't is usual. And I am not the least bit worried that it will become usual for allowing gay marriage. But even if it does, so what? Its still never going to become so usual that humity forgets to breed and we disappear.
Looking down on it accomplishes nothing. Not unless you think people need something to look down on to get by, and homosexuals are the perfect scapegoat that we just can't do without.

Because no one is being made to be gay in my place due to the fact that I do not want to be, that is what is different. Another difference is that gay marriage did not start with me or my support.
Besides, supporting a right to choose from afar is completely different to supporting a meat grinder of death and destruction from afar. There is something very faulty in your head for making that comparison. One is about love. The other is about people getting killed. Maybe someone can explain it better. But your error is so fundamental I cannot explain it well. Its like trying to logically explain to a small child why its wrong to kick the dog.

How will society have to change? I think it will still be legal to yell "queer!" as you drive either Adam or Steve. You will still be able to tell your kids that they are not "really" married, not in the traditional sense. Honestly, what changes?

I have been outside of America most of my tax paying life. I am a long term expat, but my passport is still valid. Feel free to tell me where I slipped up. Was it on withholding tax? Remember, it was the bottom 30 percent we were talking, so you can't just change it to the bottom ten or something and declare me wrong. Also, were the roads paid for by something other than sales tax, or was that state roads only?

Perhaps, but being gay is about more than sex. Or is being hetero and all of your relationships with women about nothing more than sex? If so, you might be happier settling into an asexual civil union with another straight guy and just go out and cheat on him for satisfaction. Then when you get home you can talk politics, women, watch some football together and the whole time cuss like a sailor. Could be bliss.

Anything that is NOT unconstitutional is constitutional. So actually, its up to you to prove it is unconstitutional. If you can't, then it is. Savvy?
But, yes, I would like to read the law requiring income taxes.

Nutz! Now I follow you teleprompter. Sorry about that.
But I think they do pay taxes. They just get a refund. Hardly changes the fact that the government had their money for a year. Also, they pay sales tax, and other taxes even if income tax is returned (a year later).
Plus they are following the rules we established. And if we decided to give the poor a break, then thems the rules.

Not sure why anyone would admonish a wage earner for being on the bottom thirty percent? I think all of us tend to admonish the unemployed or the fiscally irresponsible. But wage earners??? Should we admosh people for accepting a low or substandard wage now? It just seems natural to me to admonish the person who is intentionally shelling out the low or substandard wage. So, is that what we should admonish the wage earner for? Not admonishing the boss??? What if the boss doesn't react? Would you support a strike then?
Well, no matter what you say, there are only two ways the wage goes up: either the boss does it or the government makes him do it. We can go blue in the face asking, but that won't make the wage rise.

Know yourself. Know your enemy.
Dialogue with your enemies might be grinding on the nerves, but it can bear the fruit of avoiding out and out war.
Talks foster understanding. Silence fosters mistrust. (Bear in mind that there are those who benefit from mistrust and the conflict that comes with it. Yes, some people love conflict for conflict's sake too.)

Don't you get it? Necessity is the mother of invention, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. It took long enough for anyone to do anything at all about the pirates. There was finally action because of the need and the outcry. Sitting the sidelines generates no need and no squeak. Free enough pirates like this and belly-ache about that specific point for a while and maybe something will be done about. Sit the sidelines and nothing will happen.
Besides, we need all the help we can get on this one.
The Canadian Navy is well armed, armoured and trained. There is still a danger, but the pirates ran for good reason. Notice that no one died.

Anyof the above. I am not Chinese and I am no expert on China, or maybe I could choose better.
Common ground does not ensure peace and harmony. In fact, it can be a cause of violence and unrest.
In my life I have met many kinds of Chinese people. But two certain kinds seemed to be most common: the kind that would give you the shirt off their back just to make you happy, and the kind who would spend a whole week scheming just to get the shirt off your back. Every country has people like that last group, but China has too many from what little I have seen. I am wary of them. They do not seem to care about their neighbors or the country of China even, so they have to be policed from outside.
Positive, yet still wise words. And I especially agree with the "maybe" you wrote. I hope you are right, and if so, I hope that happens in China. But maybe Mr. Chan is right. I don't know. I only entered the discussion to say that right or wrong, Mr. Chan has a point and should not be treated too harshly for speaking it. I still hope he is wrong though.

TJrandom, maybe you missed the word "not" in the bit you quoted. Anyway, I doubt the U.S. has ever had any one day espionage trials. We have had some decidedly unfair and bogus espionage trials, yes, but I don't think they were one day. You actually have to scratch the surface to find the problems with our trials, that is the genius of them, because far too many Americans cannot be bothered to scratch the surface or, when they do, they just don't want to believe what they see.

If defeat is simply being thwarted from capturing ships and hostages, then we have to take that risk at least. We cannot just let them take more ships and hostages hoping that current hostages will continue to be treated better for it.
You are impatient. If this happens enough times, then international agreements will be worked out so that those who capture such pirates can be turned over to appropriate authorities. You need to lean back and take a breath every once in a while dude. Rome was not built in a day. If, in the mean time, no more ships or hostages are taken, that is great.
I do not want any more Gitmos and trampling of laws. There is no rush.
