Its about time they found this clown guilty. SIX YEARS! I hope he has not been out on bail. Now I wonder how long the appeal is going to take. And the next one.

Well, at least we know he will not rape his wife, and that was obviously the most important thing we had to worry about in Afghanistan.

The ante has been upped. What? You did not see it coming? And you have to hand it to them; this is much more clever than mistreating their hostages, like I thought they would do. Still, that might be plan B.

Well played. I am glad that Obama decided to wait, rather than go storming in like some people wanted.

Hopefully the remaining pirates will get the message that their buddies died for one simple mistake: pointing a weapon at their hostage. If they do not threaten their hostages so overtly, they will most likely live yet.

But, if they get the idea that this was a planned rescue utilizing lethal force, then woe to all current and future hostages. Their treatment could well become worse, maybe even fatally so.

It is interesting to note that the lifeboat with Philips and the pirates was being towed by the Bainbridge when the shooting was ordered. I can't quite make heads or tails of that one. But surely that means the pirates were not all that far away from the snipers who shot them.

It sounds like the snipers and also Philips himself are heroes in their own ways. Even Obama gets some credit. The commander of the Bainbridge would seem to be a hero as well, but I need just a tiny bit more evidence that he did not give that order rashly before I can say that will 100 percent certainty.

So is Obama still weak? He did not order the shootings, but it certainly could not have happened if he had not laid conditions. Seems to me he is neither weak, but he is not strong like some people imagine strong. What he is is smart. He may also be lucky.

sailwind: I'm really having a hard time how that is not exactly opposite of the families view.

Because you interpret my reason as being chiefly a means to shut this specific war down. Actually, it is chiefly a means to keep people informed of the actual cost of this and all wars, ie what we sacrifice. I would hope that if they knew this well much sooner, the war would have gotten shut down sooner or perhaps, not have happened at all, but it still would have been their choice. As this war is ALREADY GETTING SHUT DOWN, a lifting of the ban is hardly a victory for my side at this time anyway.

He wants people to know of his sacrifice because he specifically believed in this particular war. I want people to know of his sacrifice, because we cannot believe in ANY war if we do not know the cost. And knowledge of his death driven home by pictures of his flag covered coffin hardly does anything to prove the waste of this specific war anyway. Only the cost becomes known. And if that hurts the cause, then it was not worth it. I can only hope that people will learn and make the right choice next time.

I said: then that was a matter of choice by informed people.

That is the part you should focus on. It does not conflict. But if his reason had anything to do with taking away the choice of the people by keeping them uninformed...well enough said.

Madverts: So I take it your defending the Afghan slave/rape law?

Of course you do, despite the fact that I have clearly indicated that I can't see a viable alternative but that I do not like this law in any case. Far simpler to accuse me of defending it, and far easier to attack me from that angle. Never mind all those inconvenient nuances.

I think the only the option I left out is to not have this law while doing nothing about the current one, as in not troubling anyone about raping their own wife despite a law against it. And that is just the dishonest underhanded way of having this same law, and is precisely what will happen without it as I see no other viable alternative that Afghans will accept. But nobody seems to like honesty or the truth anymore. Far more comfortable to live in little dreamworlds of perfection completely detatched from everyday reality.

At a time when the country needs its men so badly (remember the Taliban?), I think it is quite irresponsible to even think of locking men up for raping their own wives or GULP stoning them to death for taking the recourse of adultery. There are more important things to deal with right now (Taliban).

Maybe you should have looked up the word "opposite" before you commented. My reasons do not conflict with his reasons and are not at all opposite. Nor do I have any issue whatsoever with his reasons. He and I may have different reasons, but there is no reason at all why they cannot go together except in a mind actively searching for conflict.

Obama is weak. The mullahs know it.

So they waited eight years, and after two months of hard work, hit a major nuclear breakthrough????

Or did they just wait eight years for the announcement? Because you know, actually possessing a nuclear fuel plant and testing centrifuges is nothing until you actually make that announcement.

Maybe if Obama had harsher words, Iran would quake in its boots so bad that it would give up all nuclear ambitions, such as happened under previous presidents.

Or perhaps you might conceed that te American president is not at the center of Iranian motive and action?

they may then barge into our countries and say "Close down all your brothels, girly bars and girly magazine puplishers - they dehumanize women!"

Sushi, they are free to comment. I will disagree with them, but they are free to comment. How bitterly I disagree with them will be in direct relation to hardness of their heads. But rest assured I will not start out by me telling them to mind their own business. That will only come as they time and time again fail to understand or accept the reasoning they are given and the details of the situation that they do not even understand.

I personally think this drift is going to cause more social unrest because I think we as a species NEED a fixed set of rules

I think the rules are important for the unenlightened. And surely the ME FIRST mentality is woefully unenlightened and I agree it will cause a lot of problems. When one is more enlightened, rules actually become a hindrance to do the right thing, as no rule is perfect.

In this topic there is a dilemma that no single law will ever properly solve. A man is supposed to get sex from his wife and his wife alone. So what do you do if the wife does not cooperate? I earlier suggested divorce, but in Afghan society where does that leave a woman? In order to implement that idea, a complete rehaul of Afghan society might be necessary. So what is the alternative? Expect the man to go without? Yeah, good luck with that one. Somebody is going to get raped in that situation. I think its a good bet that the woman did not get to choose her husband, and they sure did not date first so the man could get an idea of if she was cooperative in the bedroom. And if she isn't, then you have a pretty big problem on your hands. It seems to me that making sex an absolute duty of the wife is the only quick fix instantly available, but I do not like it at all. But I like the idea of having to completely change Afghan society even less. And I like the idea of locking up all the hoardes of men who WILL rape their wives anyway EVEN less than that.

So, something that we need to be mindful of (and you pointed this out) is that we ARE outsiders, and I am sure we do not even know the half of it. So how do we conceive of an alternative? If you are going to be against something, then you better have an alternative. If you don't have one, then you are just farting in the wind. Far too many of us do not have the humility to see that.

smithinjapan: Asking people not to make political comments is, quite frankly, being naive at best.

Yep, so naive in fact that they will support the next war, and the next war, and the next one. All the while whining about how we should honor sacrifices rather than try to prevent extreme waste of life.

I never met Air Force Staff Sgt Phillip Myers, but I will never forgive those who got him killed, particularly those that sent him off to war or even condoned it.

Unfortunately, pirates/terrorists often don't give a rat's behind about their captors.

Any make-believe sort of statement to justify violent action, eh Sarge?

First of all, pirates and terrorists are hardly synonymous (that means they are not nearly the same). Terrorists do not have a set gameplan of taking captives for profit. Second, these particular pirates tend to take good care of their captives when they can expect a ransom.

You know, I don't know anything about this captain. But I wish some people with brave words about how some deaths cannot be avoided would go trade themselves for him so we can attack the pirates guilt free.

South African media at the time said they were accused of trying to force students into relationships and to engage in sexual contact.

One of the other things Oprah might have overlooked is that the sexuality of her female wards has not been expunged to the extent it would have been had they been raised in America. Or, if there is any truth in the quote report, are we going to conveniently blame the matron currently on trial? Because you just know that teen-aged girls are not supposed to know or feel anything about sex, and thus, the question of their sexuality never needs to be addressed, and we can ignore it and never leave our comfort zones.

What an awfully round-about way to say that she turned herself in!

authorities said Saturday they still do not know the motive for the killing.

Obviously it was manga that warped her. I am sure that once her house is inspected, a huge pile of them will be found at her home, along with a bunch of other child porn, and maybe even a rape video game. Or can we rule those out since the suspect is a woman? (sarcasm off)

But I am sure the usual suspects will rule those out THIS TIME, because the suspect is a woman,

Anyway, very sad news from the murder capital of the first world, and probably also child murder capital of the first world.

I think I will stick with eradicate as I don't mind sounding harsh. Killing them is undoubtedly going to be part of the solution. But perhaps I should have said eradicate piracy rather than just eradicate the pirates. No reason to kill them all, but no reason to take any unnecessary risks with them either.

all the while expressing your "concern" for the plight of Iraqis under Saddam when you never did so prior to the 2003 invasion

Hey, that is not fair. I know a lot of people like Sarge, and the plight of the people of Iraq was always a significant part of their hate of Saddam.

Of course, it was not enough to justify the darn fool invasion IMHO, let alone all the unpleasant after-effects you mention.

Other than that, I am with you Sushi.

Liberals want to say they are only part-time pirates, -they only pirate after their part-time job at McDonald's to make ends meet, but the world knows better.

Bizzare comment. Sounds like you are trying too hard to scapegoat liberals.

Nobody condones piracy. Few are seriously concerned about pirates getting killed in the process of eradicating them. The only real concern among liberals I think is getting innocent people hurt in the process of apprehending or killing the pirates.

Now, liberals might comment about the causes of the piracy, as in the pirates on the lower part of the totem pole are doing it because they are poor. But that does not mean they think piracy is A-ok. They merely want an appropriate response. This is because it seems that the radical conservatives would just as soon nuke the whole of Somalia to solve the problem (thereby creating more problems) because they seem to completely not understand the root of the problem.

teleprompter: All you have to do is examine the life of Islam's founder. Were he alive today in any civilized nation he would be in jail.

So would Abraham and whole lot of old Testament characters. I find Islam no more or less troublesome than the old Testament, the solitary holy book of the Jews and the base of Christianity.

This is not spin. It is the observation of a cold eye. It is the observation of someone who is taking things in their entirety, and not splicing them up to suit a purpose.
