Crime? I do not care nearly as much about crime as I do death. If crime rates go up, I am willing to take the risk so long as the rates of premature death go down.
Besides, you want to protect your home? Get a dog. Heck, get a sword, because when guns become a rarity it will be dead useful.
Worried about some chasing you with a knife? Get fit. Take up jogging. Because you might be able to outrun someone with a knife. You will not be outrunning bullets even if you start taking steroids.

Who said anything about stopping them? What we want to do is reduce the number of incidents. Do you know the per captita gun death rate of those countries per year? Are they equivalent to the U.S.?

I am also American, and, ahem, pro-gun CONTROL. And I would like to hear what you and anyone else thinks about my methods of addressing the issue of gun control. I think I have presented some good ideas. I think our politicians present some lousy ones. They won't have any good ideas unless we give them to them. So lets start talking.

Sometimes Super, a person's sympathy manifests itself as passionate debate with the aim to prevent future victims. If we did not care, our posts would be quite different.

skipthesong, I think it is reasonable to say that American orphans receive far better care in general. Let Madonna adopt whoever the heck she wants. I would sooner complain about people who COULD adopt and won't than split hairs about people who are actually adopting.

I have not even read the thread yet, but I have no doubt that is as true as it is morbidly funny!

This is true, so far as your meaning of "jihadist message" is concerned, and what you mean is intolerance, extremism and terrorism, and good Muslims can be swayed. Just us some of us might be convinced that it is perfectly ok to drop fire bombs or nukes on a civilian center in time of war. Its not. But we have made such despicable acts a part of our Hollywood culture, and thus, people will do it and call it courage. Our Muslim friends suffer from a very similar poisoning of their culture and very similar succeptibility to do what is absolutely wrong and call it right, sorry to say.
But what we need to do WilliB is not to condemn Islam, but rather to praise its better points and call on the good Muslims to rise up and strongly and clearly oppose the extremist in the name of Islam and for the sake of the face of Islam, because the extremist is no true Muslim at all anyway.

The religion does not promise that. Only people perverting the religion do.
You do not know what jihad is. You seem to think it means holy war, as in a bloody war fought to spread Islam. You are wrong. Jihad simply means "struggle" as in to not sit on one's tuckus all day long when you can go out and better yourself and the world.
You only think it is, because you refuse to look in the mirror. A few of them do nasty things. A few of us do nasty things. They are just different nasty things chosen because of what we were taught to accept despite it defying all goodness. Here are some words from the movie The Kingdom of Heaven:
We ALL need to learn those words by heart. That will greatly help reduce the wrongs committed by extremists on both sides.

As did I. But you have to remember that some people here at JT never seem to leave their homes, and have not seen with their own eyes what security measures there are out there.
Anyway, your humility and patience is appreciated and a much needed example around here. Thanks for your input.

My understanding is that she is all plastic and liposuction now, so no. I liked her so much better when she was what she was that made her popular, her natural specialness, rather than the well-scalpeled conformist she is now.

I got a better idea. Let's keep the amendment and scrap the standing army.

I think that Nurse13 might be referring to doors that do not open without either some sort of access code, an access card, or somebody behind glass pushing a button. Those sort of minimun security would go a long way to keeping a gunman out, AS WELL AS keep patients in.

So we could read about dozens of incidents and accidents at nursing homes every single year instead of this one off bizzare attack??? Thanks, but no thanks.

This is highly debatable. Unfortunately only because the Second Amendment is slightly garbled. But if you look at English Common Law, among other things, you realize that the meaning is that everyone has a right to bear arms, so that they can form a militia if and when need be. You simply cannot respond to an emergency in this order 1)form a militia 2)apply for recognition of your militia 3) obtain proof of your militia arms ownership and purchase rights 4)go out and buy arms. The emergency will be long passed once you have done all that.
If the second amendment is going to make any sense at all, the people already have the weapons.
I don't like it either, but that is simply the way it is. Yes, something needs to be done, but it need not be high-handed.

You were more on the money when you said:
But it need not be so painful. What we need to do is convince the responsible gun owners to police themselves and license themselves. They need to view this as a patriotic duty. What we don't need is the government trying to forcefully disarm the country. We need those people working with us, and for themselves as well as us.
All the government need do is establish a framework for that to happen. Groups like the NRA could set up their own licensing and registration system totally independent of the government, with specific information on individuals only to be given to the authorities when a crime has been committed.

Most people who have engaged in the act of dropping bombs on civilian centers from the skies are probably also of a particuluar ideology/religion, not to mention, culture.
You have to be very careful, or it will sound like you are blaming that particular religion/ideology/culture.
And that was most certainly not being careful.

There are types of dates. I would share your view on one type. But I would not share it on this type.
Also, in my opinion, sex is a great way to get acquainted. The things you learn about someone during sex can be more important and deep than knowing some random piece of information, such as their middle name.

I think the problem with that statement might be the time frame, as in we are accelerating the process, and also the idea that we might be preventing the next ice age, and I don't advise toying with natural cycles just because the term "ice age" sounds bad. Cro-magnon man arose during the last ice age, and they gave rise to us.

Good luck attaching some logic to that one. As I don't think you can, I suggest going with the flow, because without logic, it becomes a majority rules type definition.
