Sarge: How about photos showing those prisoners lobbing off people's heads?

    via photoshop???

Well, Obama IS the president who needs on-the-job training.

When it comes to dealing with the mistakes of the former administration, every president does.

I would play the "we made a mistake but we are learning" card on this one, instead of Bart Simpson's "I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, can't prove anything!" card.

timorborder: Moreover, as the President has pointed out, any photos of abuse of muslim individuals is not going to win the US any friends in certain Islamic countries.

Which is why the next picture you show should depict the torturer sitting in a courtroom in handcuffs. And the next one, the same torturer in a prison cell. And the next picture, soldiers building hospitals and kissing babies.

Obama's waffling is going to be more dangerous than the torture photos. Like his waffling on Guantanamo.

I think this whitewashing can be used against us just as much as a display of the photos. So might as well be forthright, publish the pics, and be DEAD CLEAR that we reject torture and regret that that ever happened.

But this. This is like telling a lie to hide another lie. It becomes a proof in itself about what America is about. I would like America to be about truth and justice and openness. I am not getting my wish.

donkusai: Imagine if the previous administration had "flip-flopped" over Iraq, then thousands of lives would have been saved and we wouldn't have had the mess over there that we had...

Apples and oranges. Naturally, you stop a war when you have no proof that its necessary. But blocking pics when you have no proof its necessary, just a gut feeling? Completely different.

badreligion: It's not a "flip-flop" to change your mind after thinking deeply and considering all the angles of a decision. It's called wise decision-making.

He did not say he "would think about open government". He promised. Going back on a promise is to flip-flop. If he wants freedom from such criticism in the future, I suggest he NOT make promises BEFORE thinking deeply and considering all angles.

jinjapan: seems like a good flip flop as he felt the troops safety was more important & rightly so.

I don't think so. I don't think will have any noticeable effect on the troops either way.

But if he is so worried about it, why not drop leaflets over Afghanistan containing photos of U.S. troops building hospitals and kissing babies, instead of covering up the truth? I don't think enough Talibani have access to computers that they are even going to see the new torture pictures anyway.

Obama is over-riding a court decision and going back on his own word on the basis of what amounts to superstition and paranoia.

Only hold a referendum on the issue every two years

I don't know Yabits. That sounds too much like true democracy. I think they were playing for opportunistic imaginary democracy.

But I think we should be voting on other things every two years rather than whether or not to deny consenting adults their human rights.

Madverts: It almost makes Iran seem reasonable, until you think about that poor artist girl they hung last week.

23 year old girl? Who was naturally hung for being an artist right?

The little detail you don't mention is that the charge was no less than murder.

But I have no doubt the Iranian courts are messed up about the guilt though, maybe even in both cases. But unfortunately, I guess she did not have as much political value as Roxana.

Fax machines often have logging functions which would be able to show where it was sent. Also, it is possible to look up what numbers have been dialed. So, it would be more secure to discreetly pass it on.

Yeah, but don't spies have the kind that self-destruct? Oops! I am sorry. Obviously she is no spy, obviously.

Maybe a good old-fashioned scan and e-mail? Using hotmail of course.

Beauty Pageants are not "Most Representative Looking from your Country" Pageants.

Correct. But the big ones are "Single Cookie-Cutter Causasian style face or you don't qualify" pageants. Boring.

Posted in: What do you think about the "look" of women chosen to represent Japan in Miss Universe pageants, such as this year's Miss Universe Japan Emiri Miyasaka, and past winner Riyo Mori and runner-up Kurara Chibana?

Saberi admitted that she copied the document two years ago but said she didn’t pass it on to the Americans as prosecutors claimed.

Why would she pass it on? I am sure she knows how a fax machine works!

I have avoided commenting too much on this one until some evidence came along. Copying a confidential military related report is a whopper. And yet, those dastardly Iranians are releasing her.

I expect the usual suspects to, rather than admit that the Iranians are not all bad after all, tell us this is just further evidence of how crazy they are. Or, to just say silent until until the good gesture is forgotten.

jonnyboy: the fact is there are massive differences in skin colour, face shape, nose contour etc. that go beyond mere individual differences and down to actual underlying genetic differences.

I cannot believe kinniku agreed with you. I never so much as implied anything against that. I know perfectly well there are massive differences. Emiri is proof and she is staring me in the face. But certain features are abundant here, and certain faces are uniquely Japanese, maybe not 100 percent, but close enough.

It sounds like you could be describing someone from any one of a number of different Asian countries.

I don't think I can aptly break it down into a words, and I said as much earlier. A picture would be worth a thousand words, but I can't post a picture, and can't be bothered with a thousand words over this.

This woman is Japanese and she has a right to look as she does without people claiming she 'doesn't look Japanese'.

But you are mischaracterizing my real complaint, and its been happening little by little ever since the first reply to my first post. Its not that she does not look Japanese, its that there is no way she could become Miss Universe without looking so darned Caucasian. I want more variety. Instead, all I ever see is this cookie-cutter material. Even the black girls basically just look white with dark skin.

I think it can be hurtful to someone to have people insist that they don't look like that which they are.

Some people said I looked Asian when I was a kid and a teen. I did not care.

I think its more hurtful to tout these cookie-cutter pageants like they are experts on beauty, because their narrow focus tends to make other beautiful women feel inadequate.

MildredRoper: An adult interested in pre teens is a definite pedophile and should be removed from society until he is no capable of being a danger.

This is such an extremist opinion, and in my deleted post, I nailed it dead to rights. It is bizarre that this board allows such an opinion as jailing people NOT for what they have done, but for what they think, and that opinion cannot be completely torn apart for the backward and extremist opinion that it is. All my comparisons were dead on the money. But I guess we have a bandwagon to ride around here.

Moderator: You didn't nail anything except yourself. You (and other readers) have to learn to refute other posters' opinions without being impolite to them or going off topic.

T_rexmaxytime: Can you explain to me how she is representing a cookie-cutter caucasian style beauty?

Rectangular face and head, rounded and large eyes, long eyelashes, low cheek-bones, tall thin cheeks, a light curl in the hair, a wide mouth with somewhat thin lips, a nose that is long between eyes and mouth, and quite a lot of chin.

But I cannot believe you cannot just holistically see this, and need it broken down into parts. Also, I do not think I can break it down completely.

A look more representive of Japan would be a rounder face and head, smaller mouth, shorter nose, smaller chin and straight hair. Other things you can give or take. In my opinion, the most beautiful women Japan has to offer need no make-up whatsoever and still look stunning.

My mistress is like that. Her eyes are somewhat round but still narrow and large in comparison to her face, lips not so thick, small mouth, small chin, and fairly pale. Her nose I only see on Japanese people, a little angular with no bridge. Rounder face than this girl. And stunning, even crawling out of bed in the morning with zero make-up. The girl is an angel, and I would take her over Emiri and day.

teleprompter: So, uh, if the issue has leaped ahead, so to speak (nudge-nudge) in Maine, and in New Hampshire, well maybe Obama will be forced to give it the push to federal.

If that happens, I am going to blame the people who upped the ante by taking it to state constitutions. If it goes to federal, it serves them right. They never should have made it a constitutional issue. I sincerely hope it blows up in their faces as much as I wish it had never gone that direction at all.

If you did, you'd know "marriage" is between one man and one woman.

In other news, a Popular Mechanics writer was arrested in Oregon for describing a hybrid engine as a "marriage" between the internal combustion engine and an electic motor. His statement was a clear violation of the Oregon State constitution which, since 2004, has defined marriage as "a union between a man and a woman only." (sarcasm off)

She is representing Japan in name and by the virture of her being Japanese.

What she is not representing is the unique beauty of Japanese women. She is representing a cookie-cutter caucasian style beauty that the simple-minded pageants cannot seem to get over. Yeah, there are some Japanese women like this, and Emiri is proof, but not so many who are even remotely like her. And in case you don't see it, this one needs a lot of make-up to acheive the effect.

The Japanese women who I find to be the most beautiful need no make-up ever. That is the type of woman I would like to see representing Japanese beauty.
