why did they take this route? Passing through russia is shorter.

Though this is Japan's first one, I believe the US already has open-skies agreements with several other countries. The US has always been looking to make open-skies deals where its airlines could stand to gain (the other countries look to gain too).

I think it's more cowardly when fighters don't wear distinguishing marks that distinguish themselves from non-fighters.

If a fighter truly believes in his/her cause, then be proud of the mark that symbolizes that cause. Show the mark; don't hide it.
