    JohnBecker,

I think she's a relief pitcher, so even if she has to bat, they could just pinch-hit for her....... unless there's nobody left on the dugout. (Or she could just stand at the very far corner of the batter's box and not swing.)

It's basically Apple's answer to the popular netbooks at around US$499 - netbook size hybrid of iPhone and laptop and tablet and e-reader.

Toyota is taking a big hit (up to half their sales) for who knows how many days. But what Toyota has going for it is the good brand feeling that American people has for it (unlike some other brands). At the speed of their response (not many companies would've taken such a dramatic step or relatively as quickly - and they are doing the right thing, instead of playing with people's lives) and assuming they figure it out and fix the problem, most people who would've bought Toyota most likely wouldn't change their minds. Assuming they fix whatever causes the problem, of course.

Well, something Obama still has going for him is that among Ohio polls (a bellwether state), the leading blame for the sorry state of the economy is still Bush at 24%, followed by the banks, then Congress. Obama's poll aggregate approval rating dipped below 50% for the first time at 49% (for comparison's sake, the same as Pres. Reagan after his first year in office, before turning it around). His State of the Union address may not spike his approval rating back up (employment jobs is probably the one that could do that), but he may hope to level out the trend.

As for the banks, the American people's anger about it stems a lot from this situation: the banks insured their risky investments with AIG; when the loans went south, AIG could've defaulted on the insurance; the US government bailed out AIG and thus the banks but at 100 cents to the dollar (basically 100% of the bad investments); when regular Americans make bad investments, they lose their money; when banks made bad investments, they got all their money back. Thus the anger. A lot of Americans feel the banks shouldn't had been bailed out, or at least not at the full 100 cents to the dollar.

To even get into scientology requires a lot of money, of which Haitians don't have a lot.

Don't forget the anti-tax Republicans too.

Volcker's Rule wasn't supposed to be in Obama's plan but was included to get Republican support for the bill.

Volcker’s proposal, delivered with the support of top officials from past Republican administrations, did not result in the usual partisan reflex.

“When Volcker’s got something to say I want to hear it,” Republican Sen Bob Corker, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, said in an interview.

While the consumer agency has long been a cornerstone of Obama’s regulatory plan, Volcker’s proposal was not. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has argued privately and in congressional testimony that proprietary trading by commercial banks did not lead to the financial crisis.

The Democrats get something; the Republicans get something.

Heheh, maybe if the prosecutors waterboarded the prisoners, they would've gotten more out of them that would be usable in a military tribunal.

    fukuokajin,

I don't want to put all the burden on the parents, but at the same time, I don't want to ban everything on sight (different parents will always find something offensive on anything). Parents do have to shoulder most of the burden though - it's just part of parenting. That way, different parents having differing morals (e.g. what's innocent to some is porn to others) can raise their kids according to their own, within legal limits.

    michaelqtodd,

So no new China development then? Just watered down versions (inevitable when there's state censorship) of what others already developed. Waiting for the day a development there sets the techweb world on fire (of course, the China government would not allow that because that would mean loss of their control).

Don't knock the "moderates." They just elected Sen. Brown into office - there are only 12% registered Republicans in Massachusetts.

Technically, the astronauts are under company time 24/7, so even during "off-work" downtime, their internet is subject to company restrictions.

There's hardly any significant internet development in China. When's the last time a new internet-related idea has come out of China? On the contrary, many of their people are blinded from new developments like Twitter and public streaming sites. In that case, it's more like in the dark ages. China just uses what other people have developed, after watering it down.

    fukuokajin,

Just because "porn" is the 4th most common search term among kids does not automatically mean they will get it. A properly-managed computer environment by parents or parental-control software should be treated like any other regular parenting protocol.

Many powerful US corporations and entities are now owned or controlled by foreign governments (unlike the US, such governments can operate commercial businesses and NPOs). From oil companies to tobacco to environmental organizations. They can now more directly influence the vote of the American people. Get ready to be bombarded by election ads more than ever this coming autumn (if you think Super Bowl ads are overblown...).

Any court worth its salt would protect anyone against abusive spouses -husband or wife- regardless of nationality. Japan's government is insinuating that Japanese wives are protectionless against foreign husbands.

Seems a way for only online ads to support a business nowadays is for each webpage be comprised of 90% ads and 10% content, one webpage per paragraph, websurfers to keep clicking on the "next" link to continue reading, seeing yet more ads along the way. (Not for me though; my tech don't let me see any ads - sorry JT.)
