Yes shooting the ball a nd scoring a series of goals always makes for enjoyable eatching, but there is an age old saying that it is defence that wins games. The problem with Japan is that we lack the defensive tougness that underpins a world class team. Look at the last wrld cup, we lost to australia as a result of two major blunders in defence in a midfield.
Whilst I would love for Japan to bea ble to win games 4-0, 3-1 etc, I would hate for us to lose a game 5-3 or 4-3. Gladly settle for a 2-1 win if it means that we can secure 3 points against the top teams in the world!

Stringbeans is a bit of an exageration. To watch Peter Coruch play is not beauty personified agree, but the tall strikers (actually big strikers as I add Emile Hesky and John Carew to this group), can play a beautiful role when paired with a fast stiker who knows how to run.
Placing a big striker can really help to stretch defences and create space right behind for a pacy striker like Rooney or Agbonlahor to take advantage of. I wouldn't call it long ball tactics as the idea is that by playing up front, when the ball comes in as long as he can hold the ball, he's created space to play it to the wingers cutting in or the second striker running behind.
The J-League defenders can only improve by playing against a buig forward who's prepared to use a bit of elbow.

baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby sevens, softball and squash.
I still think that golf will have a high priority and when you consider the ability of the sport to bring in the likes of a Tiger Woods to the olympic mopvement?
7s rugby will be good. It is an exciting game and offers the lesser sporting powers of the likes of Fiji, Western Samoa, Argentina, Tonga a good medal chance. If they can bring in exciting new names such as James O'Connor of Australia (brilliant game against Italy!) all the better!

The global appeal enjoyed by golf has been rising for the last 10 years. An example is the explosion of its popularity in China. Mission Hills Golf Club, Shenzhen China is merely an example of the appeal of golf within that country. The depth of the fileds is such that even countries such as Fiji with Vijay Singh and Ireland with Padraig Harrington can aim for the gold. Whilst Woods will always loom large, many countries stand a fair chance of medals in this sport.
Definetely more appealing that softball and one that can add a lot of star power to the Olympic movement.

Some things are meant o be Ms Hoshino!
JT Thanks for the pic of the day!
societymike, of all people, Aki Hoshino would probably be one of the few ladies with the upper proportions to support that dress...that said I guess somethings were always supposed to be.

My experience has been that once you work for a foreign company overseas, it is impossible to go back to Japan to work in Japan Inc. I spent 15 years witha foreign bank and the sthought of working away in a Japanese financial company is torture. A Japanese friend who worked with me in HK and London found it impossible to fit in even with Nomura and deceided to work for a good old bulge bracket firm. There are its pitfalls. He got laid off last year after three years back in Japan for a US i bank. that said, he's never regretted it and has made enough. The morale of the story is that Japan Inc is a difficult place to work even for Japanese who have spent years understanding what its like at the other side of the fence.

tkoind, I think in many a case it is self inflicted. Many J males dont seem to understand the conspet of father, husband. They think that as long as I'm providing the income I am doing my job. Yes being a breadwinner is important, but it get's you no where from an emotional bonding perspective. I went 12 years in my marriage thinking of work, deals and bonuses till i nearly got divorced. Nowadays, I'm happy to let the wife control the purse. I get out of the office at a decent hour such and spend about an hour with my kids going through their day before they turn the lights out in the rooms around 10:30pm. I get up at 6am so I can have breakfast with them and go through the day's schedule before i send them off to school.
Many J males just don't seem to get it. For them, they work and then go drinking with their colleagues or clients. Get home and sleep for 5 hours and repeat the whole day. On weekends if they're not sleeping to recover, they're out playing golf with their mates.
Not saying that all are like that but many are. Can't blame the wife if there is a divorce after retirement you know...
