@maria - I agree, during one of my trips to Okinawa, we visited the himeyuri museum. The experience was... numbing, but in a good way. It really gave you an insight as to what was going on on the island during the closing days of WW2. And the story behind it was just so sad, not to mention the portraits of all the young girls along the walls who perished

@chibachick: pretty sure that is a tactic that j-lawyers tell the japanese spouse - deny access and get the LBP to pony up the child support with no guarantee of contact in the future. Its malicious and deceitful that its allowed to happen.
One thing that I noticed now, Air Line companies (at least Air Canada) now require a letter from the parent giving permission for the other parent to travel with the children and specify a return date - probably hoping to avoid any lawsuits that could crop up. No idea if this letter has any real legal bearing though.. and it could always be forged.
Funny thing is, my wife and kids just left for Japan to visit her parents, I typed up the letter and all, and the check-in desk didn't even ask to see it!!!!

The Hague Convention works if there is sufficient political will to back it up. The problem is Japan doesn't really recognize this type of kidnapping as a crime. To them, it just looks like J-Nationals simply returning to their homeland or some nonsense.
This is a good first step but when we need to actually see it in action

With Japan's points system and institutional racism.. why would any "elite" immigrant want to go there? Probably a moot point because large immigration levels ain't going to happen anytime soon

First class flyers basically subsidize the flight for the rest of us peasants
I've even heard of a scheme where airlines may start charging for window seats..
Posted in: Do you think airlines are sneaky about fuel surcharges, fees for extra baggage and other charges for various services?

I don't understand how a city mayor can also be directly involved in a national political party.. surely some conflicts of interest there.
That being said... if someone like Michael Bloomberg started spouting this nonsense, there'd be a riot in NYC

one quarter of positive GDP growth does not make a recovery - the key point is will this be a sustained recovery. An aging society, a collapsing pension system, falling birthrates, awful job prospects for the nation (just read that other JT article about the 59 yr old man and his 3 stay at home sons)... even if the currency is devalued to being worthless and Japanese goods are all in vogue again, I wonder how much of that will actually be produced within the country and not in Thailand or Vietnam were wages are much much lower than what a Japanese employee will demand.

what a stupid survey. My 4 year old son can come to the same conclusions as these "experts" - If only one company uses iOs and the other 95% use Android, which do you think will have a bigger number? No one cares about the OS market, people care about market share of the companies themselves and what it means to the bottom line and for shareholders.
Android dominance is great for Google because they can use the platforms for ad revenue... but is Samsung happy sharing the Android space with HTC, Motorola, and the others? I think not..
of the 156 million phones sold in the first 3 months, how does this break down? Because as an investor, this is key info!

surely there was a more secure location to do this psychiatric assesment - prison hospital? so if the prosecutor's office cannot be held responsible, should it be the prefectural police taken to task for not taking precautions?

Takuro Morinaga is same "tv personality and economic analyst" who proposed a tax on "handsome men"

and judging by the look of him, he won't be paying any tax any time soon...

The priests who run Yaskuni say that all the spirts there coalesce into one entity... which to me being the unreligious type sounds like a huge load of BS, but that's me being insensitive. On the other hand, it almost sounds too convenient that they can't seperate the criminals from the common soldiers..
and even on the third other hand, its about time China and Korea stopped throwing their toys out of the pram every time a politician goes there. Germany doesn't make a stink to the US when an official visits Arlington or any of the war cemetaries around Europe and vice versa when a German official does the same. We're talking about events that happened almost 70 years ago!!

my son learned english and japanese... he's 4.
I'd reason wtfjapan is successful in Japan is that because of his ability (or in this case lack of ability) means he can't be hired by a japanese firm, therefore saving his work/life balance and not being ko'd by having to work until 11pm every night.
I'd definitely call that a success
