    The problem with languages is that everyone translates in their minds before speaking. This is the biggest barrier. With any language, if you don't have the vocabulary, then you can't really say much. If you know all of the words but still can't speak and mess up the grammar all of the time, you are a cock. (not necessarily so if you only learn and use the foreign language in your own country - I am referring to those who live in Japan for like 6 years and still can't do level 2 of JLPT)

    I agree with moonbeams. The more kanji you learn, you can actually visualize the kanji when you hear a new word, and guess what they are saying. It takes a while to get that far, but it is helpful. Granted, there are a lot of kanji, but I hate it when people use that as an excuse. The more you learn, the easier it gets. Most of them just use parts of other kanji. You live in Japan. Become literate.
