Umm...Isn't not having a sufficient volume of business a "proper reason"? You can't blame the companies for not having foreseen the financial meltdown. Probably there are some bad eggs amongst them using it as an excuse but I'll wager that most of these companies can't afford to hire additional workers…

I agree with kakikaki: go to France and see how far you'll get speaking in English or any language other than French. You will be made to feel like an idiot or worse. Italy isn't any better. It's nothing unique to the Japanese.

Kafkaesque: she is barred from entering Japan for 5 years because she overstayed her visa, i.e. her visa expired while she was in detention. The logic of the Ministry of Justice is impeccable, as always.
