How about Toyota and other automobile makers announcing that they will completely switch from fossil fueled cars to 100% electric cars (not hybrids) powered by solar energy within the next 3 to 5 years. Now that something that's newsworthy. Otherwise who cares what this old fart does?

This is a stupid publicity stunt that no one cares about. As evidenced by the lack of comments.

Guess they must have read the "thieves manual" from the other JT article "Ready job opportunities await aspiring crooks".

> In Japan, even the thieves have to follow the rules in a manual. > It's so funny but true. Everyone in this country needs a manual to function as a human being. Now we learn that even crooks need a manual to tell them how to steal. Are Japanese just inherently stupid or what?

tokyocrawler: thanks for the insight into the world of hostesses. i honestly didn't know that the women have to incur the debts of their customers. that really sucks. i can see how this woman would have felt pressured. not to say that i agree with and/or condone her suicide, but i can certainly understand from her point of view how she must have felt. how sad for her.

This is why I'm happy for another story in JT that television may be on the bring of obsolescence. Not that Japanese TV programming is totally responsible for these kinds of things, but it definitely has an influence. Women on JTV are always bikini clad doing nonsensical things to make money. Girls grow up watching this and think that the only way to make a quick buck is by showing some skin and/or having no self worth. How many J-women have a dream to be Doctors, Lawyers, Business owners? It's a sad situation, but I think it goes deeper than just a mother prostituting her daughter. I think it goes deep to the root of J-women mentality that they think their only tool for making money is their body.

Haven't these idiots who supposedly know what customers want ever heard of H.264? It's audio and video quality is far better than flash compression technologies and it's scalable from mobile devices all the way up to HD video without losing picture quality. As Apple's CEO Steve Jobs pointed out so many times, Flash is dead. Adobe is still trying to force it's proprietary format. H.264 is the future, that's why Blu-Ray is based on this codec and why YouTube is now broadcast using it. We can watch YouTube on the iPhone and STBs without Flash because of it.
If these idiots really want to cater to the wants and needs of customers, how about making content universally available to anyone anywhere in the world and not limited by region. For example why can't a person living in Japan buy TV shows from the US on iTunes? It's just plain stupid! By limiting certain content to US customers only, they potentially lose billions in global sales. They are not curbing illegal downloads with this strategy, they are encouraging it. When a customer can't find the content he or she wants through legal resources, they turn to Peer-To-Peer networks.
Universally available content, that's the real future!!!

Police in Japan are only good for harassing bicycle riders late at night and foreigners in Roppongi; nothing else. Don't expect them to protect you.

So it's appropriate for Japanese men to fantacize about rape, but inappropriate for Americans? WTF?!!! No wonder the culture here is so screwed up. Rape is inappropriate behavior, PERIOD! For the software maker to say it was only meant for the local market really pisses me off. But even worse is that some local "Watchdog" cleared this game saying it was ethical. So rape is ethical in Japan eh? I really feel sorry for Japanese women.

Didn't bother reading the article because it's ridiculous to think Obama has to apologize for anything. The only thing that Obama has responsibility for are the decisions he's made since Tuesday January 20, 2009.

If the U.S. and Iraq are indeed secure, then why the need for secrecy? The fact that this trip was made in total secret, tells the true tale of how much BS the Bush administration has shoveled to the world over the last eight years. And now at the end of his term he has the arrogance to make a victory lap? If the region was truly safe (as Bush likes to proclaim), then he should have been able to travel freely and openly through Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is so racially typical of the world. Whenever a person of color assumes a position of authority, the first thing everyone wants to do is dump the entire world's problems on him so that if he does screw up something, they can all point a finger and say (or subconsciously think) that people of color don't belong in those positions.
Obama is a person, he is NOT the second coming of Jesus. I have never seen such outrageous expectations of any president in my 40+ years of living. It's like every country in the world is expecting him to be their savior. Let's not forget that Bush has screwed up things so bad that it would be a huge undertaking for ANYONE to fix not just Obama.
Give the guy a break. He hasn't even taken office yet and already he is being set up to fail.

I think this is a deeper social problem. Japanese aren't taught how to deal with stress nor are there any counselors here. With the economy going to hell, people aren't able to cope with the stress and I think we will start to see an increase in incidents like this and other crime. The scary part about it is the police aren't prepared to deal with serious crime either.

The ironic thing is that these are EXACTLY the kind of people who Obama is trying to help (the poor underclass). The McCain/Palin campaign could care less about this demographic; they are just using their poor intellect to stir up racial hatred and get themselves elected to office.

This woman is an opportunist and nothing more. Too beautiful to be a politician? She never wanted to be one in the first place you can tell by her callous remark to losing her support base ("I regret the break-up of the support group but it’s no use crying anymore”). She was just using her father's office to catapult herself into the limelight. As a young woman she could have done more to empower and inspire young women all over Japan to be more than bikini pin-ups for the chauvinistic boy's club. She chose to be (or is) the typical airheaded bikini model we see every night on J-TV. What a waste.
