USN: I agree with what you say. Japan and S. Korea have the full backing of the US military. Without it you might have seen both sides be a lot more agressive over the last 60 years. Its a great deal for Japan considering they don't have to "waste" billions of dollars on their military like the US does. All that money can go back into infrastructure or lower taxes
To use an analogy you don't have to fight on the playground if your bigger brother does your fighting for you.

He should go, no harm there. But if he makes a speech then he shouldn't appologize for previous US actions. He should stress how the US is leading the international effort to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

shit, i spelled "Nobel laureates" wrong, shit, now my argument looses all credibility. =(

Even as an American I don't think Obama is qualified yet to be a Nobeloreat. I would say however that if Obama gets everything done that he wants to get done then that would make him a great candidate. Opening international dialogue, setting up Iraq and Afghanistan as successful democracies, finding a better solution to the Israel/Palestinian conflict, launching the world into a new era of environmentalism, etc.
I can see where the Nobel committee was going with this "he inspires everyone" kinda attitude, but I thought the Peace Prize would be based more on results and not just pure potential. I seriously don't care though if as long as this award "inspires" him and others to help cooperate to solve some of the above mentioned problems.

That must be the strangest camera angle ever. Barack and Michelle are very tall and look the exact same height as the PM. =0

> It's not cut and run. It's cut and grow. We are somehow gonna have to learn to live with the fact that some people think differently to yourself, and live differently, >
You're confusing two totally different philosophies. Any two people can have a respectful difference of oppinion (i.e. not kill each other over it). As soon as you try to kill someone now that difference of oppinion is there business too, and they have the right to defend themselves. The Taliban and even Al Qaeda were left relatively unharmed by the United States until the acts of terrorism reached American soil. Look at North Korea! Kim Jong Il poses a much bigger threat to Japan/Korea/America than the Taliban. Thing is, no one really cares too much as long as he keeps to himself.
The notion that Afghanistan is "America's War" is irresponsible. The Iraqi War, yes, but not Afghanistan.

Why is the vote 50/50 still? The Afghanistan war isn't nearly as controversial as the Iraq war, and there is still a lot of work to be done in that country. Just think, if a strong coalition force helps create a foothold for an emancipated people and democratic government we would be doing a great service for their country, and people. Not to mention creating a strong ally in the region.

I don't support the ban because its a ban on religious freedom of expression. I do however feel that temporary identification should be mandatory, so a drivers license must have your full uncovered face, i.e. not a burqa that completely obscures your features. Covering people excessively hinders law enforcement, and public safety is the only thing that should be given weight when debating personal religious preferences.
Posted in: In some countries, there is a ban on adults and children wearing religious clothing and symbols such as burqas, veils, head scarves, skullcaps, turbans and crucifixes in public places like schools, recreational facilities and so on. What's your stance?

I looked up prices for the bullet train online and it was enormously expensive. Why would anyone take such an expensive ride?

USARonin: That's right that ad populum arguments don't work on CIVIL RIGHTS issues. If we were put minority rights on the ballot, then nothing would ever get accomplished without significant majority sympathy because, by definition, the minority doesn't have 51% of the vote.
Also you fail to prove that homosexuality is deviant behavior. I venture a definition of evil being any act that harms another person. Under this assumption hairy bear man love isn't any more evil than your dog humping your leg. I'd like to see your definition of "evil" or "deviant" or "equal", cause if it has anything to do with your religion then keep it to yourself as no one wants to hear it.
See, the thing you don't understand is that Gay Rights is legal equality. Gay people don't want to be a part of your witch burning crusade church, so leave them be. If they're religious they gays will get married in their own church and have no more desire to bring that into your unholy sanctuary than you have the desire to invite them. I do have to give in to your point, the word "equal" isn't always as such.
There is no equality between religious marriage and legal marriage, too bad that marriage is just such a convenient word for the situation...

USARonin: What are you spouting. "Traditional Marriage"? "Live and Let Live"? Just because its not politically correct to call for harsher punishment than this doesn't mean you should mask it. Honestly, what harm does being gay cause any one person? You can't say it damages "society" cause that's not a person. Bad banking damages a society in a concrete way (not in a invisible non-existent moral way), and no one is punishing the bankers. As an American I feel ashamed that my fellow countrymen would go out of there way to needlessly hurt our brethren.

@jonnyboy: Usually external evil helps similar cultures unite, so Islam won't fight many wars "within" itself if there is a war to fight "outside"
@mousepotato: Democrat in office = pretty good Islamic relations. Obama in office = best possible relations. Republican in office = hostile relations and possibly more wars with islamic countries
If you haven't seen Bill Maher's new movie Religulous then everyone should at least rent it. Its funny in parts, but he asks some really pointed and cynical questions to leaders of all 3 abrahamic religions and by far the Islamic leaders were the most intolerant. Could be movie bias sure, but the types of views they had are almost categorically not held by Christians and Jews.
