Hmmmm...back to the story. Im pleased that the house passed this. In general, I think there should be more regulations on wall street as opposed to fewer.

As for all the typical cynical attitude directed towards 401ks and wall street etc there is an easy solution. Invest your money however you want. Or dont invest at all. Invest your money in Europe if you think its better for you. Build up a 401k...or dont. Or keep it in a bank. Or put it in bonds. Or keep it in a shoe box under your bed. Or etc etc etc....The point is, its up to you the individual to decide how to manage your money.

There are risks to all avenues of money management. Some risks are high and some are low. But its your personal responsibility to manage your money as you see fit. Freedom of choice, right?

It's about time that Wall Street was reined in. I don't care who you blame for how it got to this point, but it's got to be stopped.

If you dont know who to blame, how do you stop it?

These video games are the work of the devil.

I thought devils were fictitious characters that only existed in things like video games.

Ive seen this type of thing in Japan for years and have often wondered why this is so prevelent. For some reason companies, hospitals, schools and restraunts are deathly afraid of complaints to the point of it being illogical. Most Japanese I know are very immature when it comes to dealing with conflict and social skills in general.

    Here is some unsolicited advice...

-Its ok to say "no" to someone. You can say "no" in a polite way, especially if you explain why you are saying "no".

-Set boundries in your relationships, personal and professional, and maintain the boundries when they repeatedly get tested. This means you might have to fire someone, quit a job, break up with someone, stop hanging around certain people, ask someone to leave your place of business, call the cops on someone, ask to speak to a manager etc when conflicts arise.

-Be fair and respectful but firm and consistant.

-Dont confuse apologizing with losing face/being bullied. Of course if there is a mistake apologize and show empathy. But everyone deserves to be treated with a basic level of respect.

Come to think of it...this advice is basically the same way to deal with children.

Its easy to complain about social problems...its much harder to offer practical solutions to solve them.

Maybe people should stop putting so much emphasis on the wedding day, which lasts a day...and put more emphasis on the marriage, which lasts a lifetime.

Dualta - Its great that you are happily married (yes, it is possible). But a few points...

A case could be made that you didnt need to get married in order to have kids and be happy with your best friend.

You also say "divorce is an escape hatch, if you ever need it". Im guessing thats in contradiction to what you and your partner promised on the wedding day. Which begs the question, why promise in the first place?

I dunno. Maybe marriage isnt for everyone.

Um - what vow in particular are you describing? I certainly don't recall any vows when I got married to my wife in Japan, the employee at the Ward Office just wanted the bit of paper. Different cultures don't forget.

Fair point. And a good point. But it begs the question, what is marriage?

I think most people would agree (vow or no vow), that marriage entails forming a union (legally binding) that involves a promise of staying commited and faithful to each other thoughout the rest of your lives.

But of course the reality of human behavior doesnt match the above...which again begs the question, what is marriage?

Firripusan - Your situation (very sad) and Ueharas seem to be quite different.

As for your debt, to put it bluntly, its your responsibility (especially if it was in your name). I dont know your details, but Im guessing this did not happen overnight all of a sudden. But I digress.

My previous point stands. Dont make promises you cant keep. Promising to be with someone (and only them) for the rest of your life is a very serious commitment.

To me it makes more sense to take the path of, "if you (or I) want to stay, stay...if you (or I) want to leave, leave." Because at the end of the day (week, month, year, decade etc) people will wind up doing what they want to do anyway regardless of a wedding, a ring, kids, a ceremony etc.

The number one cause of divorce is.......marriage. (joke)

Obviously none of you have been in an unhappy relationship

Personally speaking, Ive been in several unhappy relationships. But point being, I didnt marry them...thus giving me (or the other person) the option of ending the relationship.

If you get married, you surrender that option....or so they say.

It doesnt matter if you are happy or not. You are missing the point. If you get married, you surrender the right to change your mind.

Thanks SiouxGirl. But when you decide to get married, you surrender the right to change your mind.

Otherwise, why take the vow? Why not just say, "I love you and I want to be with you. But I cant promise to feel that way about you forever."

Americans (as a nation) dont have the patience to win the war in Afghan. They cant be bothered. They are too caught up in watching American Idol and worrying about Jon and Kate.

They got their butts kicked in Iraq by a bunch of guys wearing flip flop shoes with IEDs. The bad dudes didnt have airplanes. They didnt have aircraft carriers. They didnt have tanks.

Something is very wrong with the state of the American military.

Another case of, "I promise to love you and be with you for the rest of my life. I really really mean it.............except if I change my mind."

His movies speak the sad even tragic truth but are entertaing and with sense of humour.

Moore is clever and I think its good that his films get people talking about important issues. But if you do even a little research on his films, they are riddled with half-truths. Moore has an agenda his movies are propaganda. They are not fair or balanced at all.

I dont blame Moore as much as I do the average idiot consumer.
