This is the best case scenario for Japan. Bookies have been underrating Japan and Korea as well as their NT players in Euro clubs for years. Make some money and make a bet on Japan finishing second in this group. My odds: Columbia 8/11, Japan 7/2, Ivory Coast 6/1, and Greece 4/1. Greece are going to be whipping boy in this group. Ivory Coast is going to be tough but African team have a hard time with Asian teams.

Even in the racial boiling pot that is the US, it is inconceivable for people to be screaming into bullhorns in public that jews/blacks/hispanics should be killed. That has happened in Japan with regularity with little to no resistance from the Japanese public for years and years now. Counter demonstrations and court cases are positive news but in drops in a bucket. There really is no other developed country in the world where such behavior and sentiments are accepted as part of the social political discourse as it is in Japan.

No islands that Koreans have been staring at and fishing on for thousands of years wasn't somehow miraculously claimed terra nullis by Japan in 1905... cough cough few years before I suppose Japanese then "discovered" the Korean peninsula. LOL.

I would be convinced if they finally stopped bleeding radioactive leaks into the ocean and secured the site... which TEPCO and Japanese government has been lying and under-admitting the entire time. The site needs to be given over to international commission of specialists.

Good grief. No one claiming that hate speech should be illegal. But this level of hate speech in a public arena where Japanese crazies are shouting on bullhorns to kill Koreans should be condemned publicly and loudly rather. Instead the hatemongers are given silent consent by the Japanese society. The fact that 2,000 protested these hatemongers is a boon to Japanese society and national pride.

What's sad is that the entire nation isn't telling these crazies to shut up. What other modern civilized country do you know where's it's socially acceptable to publicly scream into a bullhorn to kill ethnic minorities? Japan has a lot of catching up to do.

Seriously Japan can you just deal with this so everyone can just move on. If Japan presented a united front apologizing for the past instead of over the top whitewashing everything the good will and economic boost to the region would be immeasurable.

I don't hold Russia in high regard except their food, women and booze but... really not everyone is going to agree with your Western European, North American sexual mores post circa late 2000's. The entire concept of tolerance presumes genuine differences in opinions. Let's learn to respect each others' stupidity and stay civilized.

Japan can pay off these grandmothers and earn itself some valuable good will from all these countries including Korea. The cost would be pennies and the benefits would be immeasurable.

Is it really ANY surprise that a Japanese politician makes a comment that sympathizes with Nazi's rise to power? No. That same fascist, racist underbelly is squashed and dead in Germany but it's alive and well in Japan. It's a societal cancer in Japanese society the same way that Deep South racism is alive and well in the US.

Rising Sun flag is the same as the Swatstika. They are symbols of WWII fascist, imperial aggression and represent war atrocities committed against other nations and peoples. The difference is that in Germany it's become an illegal symbol whereas in Japan they reminisce, whitewash, deny and claim they've already apologized for the very things they deny all at the same. This kind of unrepentant racist, whitewashing of historical atrocities is a societal cancer for Japan.

Union Jack is the national official flag of the UK. That's just a bad analogy. What's considered to be political of offensive in a soccer match per FIFA rules depends on context of that political issue. Given Korea and Japan disagreements over WWII history, you would have to be delusional to think that the Japanese fans waving the Rising Sun flag is an expression of their support for the Japanese navy. Let's all call it what it is and move on. Let's be reasonable. You can't expect to fly WWI regalia associated with war crimes and expect the Korean fans to not respond.
melonbarmonsterAug. 02, 2013 - 12:59AM JST
If Japan thinks it has the right to wave a symbol for WWII imperialistic aggressions in 2013, Koreans reserve the right to retort. KFA and Korean fans have endured the occasional Japanese fans waving the fascist flag for few years now, not just at the game in question. Here's a crazy batshizz idea: how about we just get rid of ALL political speech including the imperial flag and political banner by KOrean fans.

It's pretty much accepted fact in international media that Japan has a problem acknowledging its historical atrocities. You can criticize Korean football fans all you want but there is a substantive, underlying problem that Japan has to face about its own demons.

Considering Kpop is heavily represented by Korean-Americans, the US Korea connection isn't really surprising. That and the fact that many Korean kids grow up in churches singing and playing instruments similarly to how many African-American performers have.

This was a great win for Japan but Korea won't be feeling too badly about the loss. They dominated for most of match, had more chances with a highly experimental team that had probably 2 hours practicing together before the tourney under their spanking new manager after a total disintegration from previous managers' systems.
