there is no such thing as government prize mate. In Japan, athletes shoulder all training expenses (unless they got sponsors once they become famous) and after they win they will be given a pat at the back. Maybe they will have some TV exposure once in a while but thats it.

extended family you say? this is Japan mate where people look after themselves. They will not go to their relatives and ask for help, it is meiwaku. Leave the children to live by themselves? what kind of life? The father has to work, who will watch after the kids? The government has no support system for the abandoned kids, orphaned kids and so on. Maybe the father is just doing a baito, its no longer unusual here in Japan to earn less than 150,000Y per month, then lessen the taxes, plus the house rent and you will see how bleak is the future. So the mother thinking all of these commits suicide, and bring the kids as not to suffer. Stupid idea? its their culture mate, its their belief. Shame campaign? Won't work. Because leaving the family burdened and kids without parents is more shameful for them.
I just pray that the family will find peace and eternal rest.

the question is very vague. What kind of TV program are we talking here? the endless talk shows? the family idiotic games? the slapstick jokes and nauseating comedians? the dumb and dumber quiz shows? the edited heavily influenced documentaries? I think the Japan TV system is brilliant? It kept people docile and sedated from the reality. A pretext of freedom and democracy but a country ruled like North Korea. Try making real comments and it will be edited by self appointed moderators. No, you don't need to tell them what to do, they are already programmed to do it without resistance. Can you find a healthy discussion about the perils of one day baitos, the lack of real jobs, the balooning budget deficits, the extent of politico-legal corruption, falling birth rates? Heck, even dentists are being paid 5,000Y per day and they wonder why such a working poor!!! The lists are endless yet you get only comedies and more comedies and more travelling. Never surprise me, media-politico-socio-legel system are held by the same powers that run this country.

I had experienced being harrassed by 2 newspaper delivery guy. Normally they come alone but things have changed. They come in pairs (young and chimpira looks) and threatens/force everyone in the building to subscribe to their newspaper (Yomiuri). Nevertheless, when I retorted in calling the police they decided to back off but went to the other room next door and kept on forcing their newspaper for more than hour. The other guy also keep on knocking on all doors and finding some poor victim to open their doors. They are obnoxious and very arrogant.

there is no way to control a class when the kids know that the teacher can not do anything to punish them, its a total anarchy. Second, a nonperforming kid as in not studying, not coming to class, never listening, always causing trouble will be promoted to the next level the next school year because they are guaranteed to pass no matter what they do. So how can the teacher instill discipline, law and order and teach at the same time? I am glad there is such thing as insurance to protect the teachers so that they can do what they have to do...teach.

the title of the article is misleading. It said somebody stole the truck with flour in it. The truck is more expensive than a 270,000Y noodles i suppose so the title should be truck stolen in Saitama. Flour black market my ass, these people can be really so imaginative. I mean are you going to steal 270,000 worth of flour to sell in the black market? What? For a profit of 270,000Y? Has anybody heard of flour black market? You can get more cash by robbing a combini (convenient store) than this.

smythe, she did not let him in. The doors which are automated will be kept open for a certain time frame once you enter the code or swipe your card on the security slot. The old man took that chance to enter the building and so the story goes. Some people will act like they live in the building, make a phone call (fake one) and wait for some people to enter the door and take that chance to slip inside. Quite easy.

The Japanese news said when the woman entered the building, the man followed her and asked for money...it takes few seconds before the door shut so the guy used that time window to evade security. Now older people in Japan when they steal they are usually only after the money...younger generation uses deadly force (of course some foreigners too). The generations born after Showa period are usually the problem kids who became the problem parents and now having problem kids (32 years and below). The guy want money so the girl gave her money. Is life worth 40,000Y for some people to insinuate that she fight the attacker and be a supermom? I am glad she used her brain. People who have nothing to lose are dangerous, and people who are desperate are more dangerous. The old guy maybe seems agitated and so she calmed him (is she a psychologist?) by giving a cup of tea. Nice.

I am just wondering why the police did not ask the witnesses during that day. Foul play no...it was an accident. Shame for the lack of investigative capacity of the police force in Japan.

prostitutes have rights as far as I can remember. Rape is rape. Condoning the guilty and dismissing the victim as whore or scum is not right. Where are the Greenpeace anyway? Sorry, I forgot, all they wanted to save are whales.

yup, the service for bedridden is quite expensive. Unless they have enough money, there is nothing for the elderly here in Japan. There was a case few years back when an old man tried to get support from the government welfare but he was refused because he has a son who is doing baito at a convenience store. Of course the son does not live with his parents and besides baito pays 980Y per hour. To cut the story short, the old guy died from hunger. The gov't has no concrete plan on how to deal with the growing problem of aging population as far as I am concerned.

unless you don't know, a japanese girl once discharged from the hospital after 4 or 5 days after giving birth, she has to resume work at home like cleaning, shopping, taking care of her in-laws and plus taking care of the baby. And that she usually does not recieve any help from anybody.

thepro Olympics is not fair to start with. Having the best nutrition, best coach, best support system, best gear, best exposure, ability to compete to international events prior to olympics, name it; against those who don't have these advantages. This is not really an issue. who usually dominates the swimming arena anyway? Have you heard third country nations excelling in it? Let the Australians, Russians, Americans, Europeans, Japanese (never a powerhouse anyway) compete...they all have the advantage. Peace.

There was a case in Cebu where these guys went to the open beach and started filming their sickening movie...too bad for them, Phil police are not that forgiving and made sure they were placed in a Phil jail with all thugs and criminals in it. Hehehe, thats what I call daring.
