Given all the revisionism regarding WW2 history, couldn't the USN of at least towed the Mighty Mo back to Tokyo Bay for this anniversary? Now that would be a great spectacle, and the Japanese would have probably appreciated it as well.

Yea... That would be something to see! Although I highly doubt any Japanese would "Appreciate" it in the manner which you suggest... It's more possible that the History Revisionist would have a field day though... I'm sure some-where along the lines they would get it printed in the new History texts that the Missouri actually started the war by shelling innocent Japanese in some beach resort town in Okinawa or something to that effect...

What in the hell is wrong with you people? Can't you see that the Japanese are actually the Victims of WW2...? (LOL...)

    That was just good-ole-American racism

Yea, the 1940's 50's and 60's were plenty full of racism.

But America has had very very tough anti-discrimination laws for a long time now....

I am wondering when, if ever, Japan will grow up and out of that 18th century mindset and join the international community....?

Until then, they will remain a country of 3rd rate.

Being in an accident where a pedestrian is killed typically results in a prison scentence... whether they are inebriated, infirm, elderly, or a teenager talking on a mobile phone whilst listening to an I-pod and playing on a PSP as they wander into the road on their merry way

I don't know what cave or what country you've been living in, but what you stated is absolutely ridiculous. I'll be the first one to say that Japan has some pretty stupid laws, not to mention the people have very little, if any common-sense and act like a bunch of 7 year olds...

Come on dude.... If somebody walks out into the middle of a busy road, expressway, highway, etc and gets nailed by a motor vehicle, "provided the driver did everything he could to avoid hitting the pedestrian."

Then he has nothing to worry about...

Now of course if he was drinking, taking drugs, speeding or driving with reckless and wanton disregard...

    ALL BETS ARE OFF!

Come on dude, use some common sense.

Even if a pedestrian is drunk and running onto a busy road, the driver that hits them would still be considered guilty in Japanese law.

Not True, unless that driver is doing something illegal, such as drinking and driving or speeding, etc...

I can tell you first hand, having hit someone on a bike, they weren't hurt, but I wasn't even given a ticket. I know of two other instances, one in which an old lady was killed after she stepped into oncoming traffic.

But I do think they need to re-educate the driving populous in Japan. They seem to think that motor vehicles always have the right of way!

Especially bus drivers, these clowns think they own the road, after a couple of near misses, I always make it a point to follow the drivers to their next stop and "physically" Instruct and Educate them, that they do not own the road and they must give ample room when they pass runners, sharing the road with them.

They are all so big and bad behind the wheels of their 20 ton Buses until you meet them face-to-face...

    LOL...

(Been there, done that, will do it again in a heartbeat!)

I bet this was a "class one" emergency, a full swat team called in, the situation room at the diet was activated, JASDF F-16's were placed on alert....

I bet he was just stressed out...

And Gaijin's are the strange ones.... LOL....

Koga was found about 200 meters away from the scene sitting

200 meters....? Come on now...? I dislike and distrust Jcops with best of them, but 200 meters might have been closest safe place to sit down.

Now for him denying that he was driving, this is another matter altogether.

Thank god no one was killed!

In any case, it's one less 'stupid' Jcop that will be stealing, taking pictures up HS girls skirts, groping women on a train, harassing salarymen / obasan's on their bikes or falling asleep in their station because they drank a drug laced tea provided by the person they were interrogating.... (LOL....)

Or maybe he'll just get promoted! He's now shown upper management that, "he's a player!"

Think about flying across the ocean to your home land. Really think that your pilot is staring steadidly out of the window to avoid collisions? is actions

I can't say I am really surprised by his actions, actually I am more surprised he wasn't caught photographing and exposing himself through the window, while driving the train...

But this isn't him driving the family car, or joy-riding on his bicycle, this is him operating a 1,000,000 plus pound killing machine. Just a year ago, 33 people died in L.A. when that driver was texting...

And planes are a different story altogether... talking apples and oranges.... For you to make that same comparison, you would need to specify that the pilots weren't at the controls or paying attention during take or landing... I guarantee you, no aircrew (pilot / co-pilot) would ever be texting or taking pictures during take off or landing....

During cruise / flight there's a thing called TCAS, and thanks to a couple Jal planes a few years ago, and several stained pairs of Japanese underware, they now know what to do to avoid other aircraft.

I'm waiting for the people who feel the cops should have shot a 74 year man

Nobody needs to shoot a 74 year old man, unless he's wielding a loaded firearm, but there's about 20 different techniques to use which don't involve bare handed, karate or judo style grappling, with a knife wielding man. Only idiots, dead or soon to be dead idiots do that.

I'm just dreading the day we read, cop(s) die of fatal stab wounds while taking on drunk knife wielding man bare handed.

I sure hope it will be worth saving the life of some deranged drunk with a weapon or firearm, maybe somebody else will go another slashing spree in Tokyo, because they know the cops won't use deadly force. We'll never know. We can only hope not.

    Piss poor training, PERIOD.

It's not a question of "IF" one these JN under-trained cops is going to finally die going to a knife fight bare handed, it's only a question of "When."

    God help them.

But unfortunately this is the mentality of the average 40 year old Japanese male, females have more common sense than to pull something so stupid.

Who needs a knife or a sword..? A baseball bat in Japan is just as good as having a 44 magnum.

I wonder when they will amend the "Firearms and Swords" Law to read, "Firearms and Swords and Baseball Bats" Law..?

I wonder if it took 10 cops to arrest this guy, and in the process the cops stuck their heads out to absorb the impacts and swings of the guy wielding the bat, rather than, accidentally "harm" this nice man during his arrest...?

Cleo... Care to weigh in with your Informed and so Astute opinion...?

    Where's my buddy Cleo...?

    JCops at their finest!

This story speaks for itself, Incompetence, Incompetence, and Piss-Poor Training, glad no one was injured!

I'm sure it's only because this fool with the sword didn't have the balls to use it, that no JCops got injured or killed.

I am still trying to figure out why they needed 5 more Jcops to finally subdue this fool, almost 15 minutes later....?

But then again, if your only training is how to hand out parking tickets to Obasan's and Ojisan's on bicycles, it understandable they wouldn't know what to do.

i believe gogogo meant by the bs comment is that a japanese in the same situation would not get a life sentence. which i also believe to be true. yes. it should be a life sentence, but it should be the same for all, not just the gaijin.

    Yes, that's very true...

This ruling is based upon public sentiment, ALL American's or Foreigners for that matter would feel the wrath.

That said... I have no sympathy for scumbags like this waste of human life, who go around killing innocent people, he got what he deserved...

How can you say such a thing...?

He may have even been one of the guys that took a stab wound to protect a drunk knife wielding crazy man at that liquor store!

How can you trash him so easily...?

    He's one of your own!

Kind of shooting yourself in the foot there, Champ.

I don't remember mentioning firearms training there brains... But that's ok, I'm sure all you english teacher's and salary-men Know all there is to know about law enforcement and self-defense techniques and tactics... (¬_¬)

Oh... and wasn't it a year ago or so that just one little scrawny 45kg geek killed like 6 or 7 people up in Akihabara...? Oh... but that was different huh...? These were just minor injuries....

I think NOT, anytime a knife is involved, it's NOT a trivial matter, these SMART Jcops are just lucky, AND I mean, L-U-C-K-Y that none of them had any serious injuries...

Like bringing a Knife to a gun fight... Jcops and REAL crime, Not A Good Idea!

Nobody is saying those cops should have gone in Guns Blazing, but to try to engage a drunk guy with a knife with only self-defense tactics and their 12 inch little plastic ASP's, (is As Chris Rock so eloquently says...) "Is just Ignat"

Need to use common-sense here people... Please... I know it's in such short supply here in Japan...

I don't want petty criminals thinking my daughter is going to 'drill' them anyways so they may as well get the first shot in. Nor do I want her to have unnecessary blood on her hands.

I don't know what planet you are living on, if you've ever ventured outside of your home, let alone your prefecture or even visited another country for that matter. I don't know, nor do I care for a second about you, But I truly hope to god your daughter never gets to face a REAL criminal, NOT for their safety, but for the safety of your daughter's.

I don't believe JN cops are totally incompetent, they know how to give directions, they know how to stop old people, kids and salary-men on bicycles to check their registrations, but that are in not any way Trained to handled anything more than giving out tickets or directions, nor should they be trusted to.

Whether you believe this or not I do not care, but for the sake of your daughter, I would hope she finds another line of work, one in which they actually train personnel for the actual tasks' at hand.

I would never ever rely on JN cops, NOR does the U.S. gov't here in Japan, we actually give them training. But I'm sure with your "Nihonjin Pride" you could never in a million years accept that fact...

cleo You think it's a good idea to have a military presence patrolling the streets? I don't. The police are not military, nor should they be.

You sound like you want to sound like you know what you are talking about... but just like your buddy "MooKoo" don't have a clue.

Do you actually know any JCops... Have you ever worked with them...? Seen them first hand in action...?

I think not.... I have, and they don't train for that kind of stuff... Matter of fact it wasn't until just a few years ago, that they actually started handing out REAL guns to JCops in Japan... You see they use to have only a limited number of REAL firearms mixed in with Dummy guns that they would circulate between the stations.... The cops themselves didn't even know if they had real guns or not... Now they are real though...

And with proper police training for one, you never allow yourself in the first place to be put in a situation where one guy can slash 5 cops... That's juts flat out PISS-POOR training!

And any REAL cop would have given that guy about 2 seconds to drop his weapon... You see, in REAL life it isn't like the movies, where you are going to pull some "Jackie Chan" crap and harmlessly and instantly disarm him and it all works out perfect... That's why, no REAL cop is going to give a wacko half a chance... They'll tell them once, maybe twice and that's it....

Maybe you and MooKoo have been watching too many Japanese police drama's...?

Obviously the JN Clown cops have too!

Maybe they should just take away all their guns... They certainly don't know how to use them... Except they sure know how to fire warning shots around kids and people in crowded tokyo areas...

    Have a nice day!

And nobody thought to shoot him? Maybe the cops should just leave their weapons at home if they don't intend to use them. And before anyone mentions it, I am talking here about "shooting him in the leg".

Oh... but that's what I use to say... But you have to remember, they are not real cops... they are JCops...

JCops do things and don't do things the way Real, Law Enforcement agencies around the world do them...

For instance, no police force in the world uses warning shots, except maybe the Philippines, or one of those third-world, anything goes countries... And especially not in front of Roppongi-Hills with hundreds of people streaming by...

I'm not even going to mention a year ago when that wacko went on a stabbing spree in Akihabara... I guarantee you... Had that first JCop actually knew what to do, when he received a NON-Life-Threatening stab wound, he should have immediately shot that wacko... He didn't necessarily need to kill him, but he could have saved at least 4 or 5 lives... But he didn't do anything... You don't attend to injured when there is crazy fxxx running around stabbing people and you are a cop with a gun... It defies logic and common-sense...

Either he was a coward OR He didn't have the proper training... I think it's the training... They train these guys to harass salary-men and obasan's riding bicycles...

More ridiculous crap... But should you expect any better... Unfortunately, I doubt it, at least until more real crime happens and these bozo's are forced to learn real policing the hard way...
