FWIW, I work at a big Japanese IT company and the employment rules say "In the event that the employee has not used all of his/her leave when the employment terminates, the unused paid leave shall be considered forfeited."
This kind of goes against what Terrie wrote above, in that the company is neither obligated to allow me to take the leave nor to buy out the accumulated leave. Don't know whether that's legal or not -- any opinions?
