I saw some of that. But I mostly watched the big building in front of the fireworks.

Do your friends read novels in Japanese? Do they discuss the present political situation in Japanese with their co-workers? Do they know what 皆既日食 means when it suddenly comes up in a conversation? I would be VERY surprized if they did.

I read novels daily, discuss politics and know "solar eclipse," but I wouldn't dare call myself fluent. After all, I post here.

Not meaning to criticise HD, but the speaking is the easy part. How can you be able to read and write but not speak? Surely if you can write a sentence down you can simply say it? Listening is another matter, and normally requires a lot of exposure.

I can read books in Japanese, understand movies with subtitles, passed 2kyu, studying for 1kyu, write a blog in Japanese, etc.. but I can't speak either

Unsure of gender? check for hair on the toe knuckles!!

I thought so as well, as male and female feet have different shapes, but a prepubescent boy could resemble a young woman. Could be a child's foot :(

Ha, ha! It's odd how some people take themselves so seriously. My point is, these are emotional reactions that are not understood by Japanese.

Yes they are, when performed properly.

Driver's actions were disgusting. No excuse. But it is possible that the driver did stop, see that there was no way to bring the young man back, and thought "live my life of go to jail."

I can't believe that people are this upset about race.

Sorry to say, but if you interpret Sotomayor's 2001 comment as racist, then it just shows you have a lesser intellect.

Her comment had nothing to do with race, you have to read from a sociological perspective, though, that might be difficult for many.

This is a non-issue. In the 2001 quote, all she did was give an example how that her perspective is different than the perspective of people who traditional hold roles of power.

Those offended by this need some self reflection.

Okay, this thread is begging for some rationality.

Maria, yes, it's terrible to call the victim a liar. However, noone is doing that here. I believe that the general consensus is that the victim accused the wrong man.

Angelo, men have no right to blame women for their weaknesses. And there is no such thing as a two-inch skirt. Come on, man.

I still cannot comprehend how Japan has a traffic light system where pedestrians, including children, are given a green light to cross and cars turning are also given a green light to turn ? I am pretty sure that yet another child has been killed whilst cycling over a crossing with a green light and being hit by a vehicle that also has a green light to turn. It's not the childs fault because they have a green light to cycle across and it's not the drivers fault when a child comes cycling out of nowhere whilst they are driving into the turn. It's the governments fault.

    yes

    Good on the judge.

Swedish guy, if you've got a good story, write it with your own characters and let it stand for itself. This is either fan fiction or a gimmick to sell your book, which either case reflects poorly on the publisher.

If you want to write canonized characters, apply to Marvel or DC.

moonbeams, you think this pullout would be going on now if McCain got elected? You think that we'd be looking forward to leaving Iraq in 2011 if McCain or Romney or any of the other republican candidates? They be working their butts off to stay in Iraq just as long as possible. < :-)

No, I voted for Obama, too. But I approach manners with a cool head and take into consideration that there is more to one side of things and I definitely don't use an internet forum to slander people.
