USAFdude,
"If they're at Gitmo, try them. If they're found guilty, keep them there or put them in some other maximum security prison"
Gee, isn't that what's going to happen ? What's the hurry ? Many of the people who captured these scum are busy out there defending your right to free speech and endless babble on the internet all day.

Cleo, does the comedy never end ? Last I checked, your Britain was more than in favor of jumping on Bush's bandwagon to enter Iraq and take part in the follies. In fact, Britain went as far as to have two seperate cabinet discussions just to make sure that wht they were about to do was "legal"... March 13 and then the 17th of 2003. You inference to unilateralism, as usual, just doesn't hold up to scrutiny... the coalition of the willing included a total of 44 countries ! Might I suggest that folks like Cleo worry more about their own governments actions before lashing out at others.

Japan is dead in the water at this point. An export driven economy with absolutely no leadership from the top. Aso thinks he can just copy whatever the US does in an effort to appear in control. What the Aso doesn't understand is that the situation is vastly different in the US. First tThe US can generate domestic consumption by blocking out foreign competitors. Second the US should now use it's dollar exchange rates to its benefit by pushing exports. In short, Japan and the US need to consider swapping past economic policies. The US needs to export more while becoming more protectionist at home and Japan must import cheaper foreign goods and generate more domestic spending. Welcome to a new topsy turvey world that will have the US economy up and roaring long before the Japanese can cry boo-hoo-hoo.

USAFdude...
"you have no idea whether any Gitmo detainee ever killed anyone; how could you know - they haven't been tried yet."
Interesting catch 22. So how can Obama justify closing gitmo with the possibility of letting them free ? The solution ... maybe they can come and stay at "your" house. Ready to welcome them in ?

Cleo puleeze...
"Why should other countries take responsibility for US mistakes?"
You Brits and French should easily know the answer to that ! Noooo, I'm not gonna run down the inexhaustable list of countries colonized by the British or the hundreds of times the US has bailed France out of another mess. But such drivel coming off your keyboard is truly... disappointing.

Whats to "push" ? Bush has already primed the pump ! See those housing sales figures today ? Seems the media was "surprised, shocked, dismayed" at the 6.5% increase last month, yep still under the Bush watch. Some of us however are not surprised... it's oil people, oil ! The world needs to hold OPEC accountable for attempting to destroy the world's economy last year. Tough pill for the Bush haters to swallow but this was never about "sub-prime" loans or the US banking industry. Sheesh !

The problem here is Japan which continues to muddle the waters through nonproductive unilateral activities... like stopping all forms of food and energy assistance. Hillary should spend more time on the Japanese. Seems everytime the bees go home to rest the Japanese come by and kick the nest. Therin lies the trouble, Japan must first stop trying to starve the NK's to death.

Is it too early in the year to start handing out booby prizes for lame comments of the year ??? I mean really now, smithinjapan's whimmsicle view of the current prez is laughable to say the least, but this closing ? Are you serious ?
"Like it or not, sargie, Obama is making your world a better place. Stop fighting it and see it for the positive thing it is instead of desiring to continue to live in misery."
So what exactly has the Obama done in his first 7 days to earn such a rousing show of approval from smithinjapan ? Lets take a look...
-He started his term off by screwing up the inauguration oath so bad that it had to be done again. Gee, I don't recall Dubya getting any "second chances" by the bashers out there.
-Then he went on to parade out 8 different guests, from his choosing mind you, to entertain or otherwise participate in the inauguration ceremony. We had bible readers, poets, singers, and a small band ensemble. In total the 8 consisted of people representing minorities, females, blacks, immigrants, Asians. We had representatives from all of the major ethgnic groups in the USA... except ??? Hispanics !!! Yep, Obama chose 4 blacks out of the eight... 50% and didn't give one iota about the hispanic population... who by the way let him have it with street demonstrations throughout the USA the next day.
-Now down to business. Time to shut down Gitmo, sign the papers and... gee, what to do with the prisoners ??? Seems Obama has yet to consider exactly what to do with some of the worlds most notorious terrorists. Hey smitty, can they come and stay at your house ? Oh yeh, it seems some of the previously released have already found shelter and work... back with Al Queda ! Yep, just google it up.
-OK, how about something positive... that Obama has promised to increase troop build-up in Afghanistan. Gee smithinjapan, more Americans going off to war probably... isn't exactly how you described it is it. What was it you said again:
"Obama is making your world a better place."
Hmm, pissing off the hispanic population, freeing terrorists, and sending more Americans to fight... yep, "making the world a better place" indeed !

The oil argument ? Again ??? Is there no shame anymore. I mean how many brainiacs out there insisted the Iraq war was "all about oil" ? 7 years later and the US still hasn't taken control of one oil field in the country. Puleeze, pull yer head out ! And Sarge is right ! The US has created more wealth, jobs, and opportunities in the middle east than any other nation on the planet. It's their religious beliefs that have run afoul... not American policies. Obama needs to stop humiliating himself and tell the Arabs exactly what they can do with their misguided concepts on world peace. The first would be to allow all religions into the holy land and go after all fanatic muslim terrorists or jihadists that disagree with this basic principle.

"The figures underscore the vulnerability of Japan’s export-dependent economy during global downturns, and point toward more cuts in jobs, output and profit forecasts in the coming months. Already, big brands including Toyota Motor Corp and Sony Corp have slashed thousands of workers and scaled back factory lines."
Japan's export driven economy is one of the main reasons behind the global economic mess. Imagine how different things would be if Japan had only agreed to import more American goods, keeping more Americans employed who could then buy Japanese made goods. A viscious circle brought on by Japanese selfishness and conceit, that still remains alive and well today as I still see no attempt to import American goods. What a freakin' joke Japan has become... sorry, just stating the obvious.

Proxy I agree. Bridgestone America had enough money to sponsor the "winter hockey classic" on New Years day (an outdoor NHL hockey game played at Wrigley's baseball field- a huge success mind you) and they still had enough left over to sponsor the half-time show at the Super Bowl, a Bruce Springsteen concert ! Millions of dollars spent here on these events, seems the head office here in Tokyo is panicking like the rest of the Japanese business world. Lets hope that when the dust settles, those fired Americans have enough common sense to give up on Japanese companies as well as their products. A lot of these job cuts seem racist ! Hardly necessary for an economy that has turned downward a mere 3 months !

Stocks in Japan are falling for one reason, and it isn't news about microsoft or sony. Japanese stocks continue to fall because Aso has no freakin idea about about how to stop it ! Coupled with Obama's speech focusing on the need for foreign leaders to stop blaming the US for their social ills, including unemployment and the economy, well the writing is on the wall. Time to sell yer meager possesions and find a cardboard box to get warm in. Japan is all but done !

When pray tell, will Toyota stop focusing all it's energy on the uS market ? Didn't they learn their lesson the first time around ? Maybe the reality of the Obama presidency has finally sunk in. Obama, the representative from Illinois has deep ties to his neighbour state Michigan and, drum roll please, the big 3 auto companies ! Toyota is toast! They will not receive financial assistance from the Japanese government, nor will they continue to have unabated access to Americas markets. Welcome to the post Bush world !

What the hey is happening at Toyota ? 20 plus years of huge profits have suddenly gone up in smoke with the company slashing jobs at every level ! This is surely one of the biggest scams in modern business history... yes right up there with Enron, time to investigate.
