When the 2008 financial collapse occurred in the United States, I remember vividly talks among my colleagues of having to rush out and move money from one bank to another for fear of losing their cash. Even though the FDIC insures each account up to a certain amount, but that's besides the issue. My point is, the US and the 'Western' world came damn close to having their 'House of Cards' crumble. We are now in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, with record unemployment among the G-8, along with record budget deficits in the US, Japan, Great Britain, and Southern Europe, not to mention Iceland, etc. All of these mentioned countries are now begging for Chinese cash.

So the main point here is, Wen Jiabao might be touting his horn and looking rather confident as he represents a nation that has not only weathered the financial crisis, but excelled during it. No one here can blame China's leadership for making at current what appears to be all the right moves, while the US stumbles with all the wrong moves.

When Naruhito signs the guestbook in both countries, he will find that the previous pages were all signed by Chinese dignitaries.

Perhaps he will be able to recognize all the Chinese signs in the capitals of both nations, or, stay at the guest houses built by the Chinese. Or, visit the various infrastructure projects- electric power, ports, irrigation, roads, that China is financing in Africa.

When he sees all this activity with his own eyes, he can then report back to the Japanese govt, and gasp out loud: 'What the *%$# are we doing in Africa besides sitting on our thumbs?!?!?!'

Slack attitude among the Japanese team contributed to the low medal count. Didn't one Japanese athlete dress like such a slob and address the Olympics as 'Nothing special'?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100211/wlasiaafp/oly2010snowboardjpn;ylt=Akk4G4FayzUDIU1k5tgZ0XZotLV

Which also means that Japan shared the zero gold status with such countries as Kazakhstan, Estonia, Albania, Latvia, and Croatia (way to go Japan!)

With Japan ranked #16 overall in the medal count, and South Korea earning nearly 3 times the amount of medals that Japan did, I'd say it is indeed time for the Japanese to work on improving their pathetic situation.

What should also be discussed in some Japanese magazines is how Japan, an established middle power, should better interact and accomodate China, the only established great power in asia. Other magazines have discussed this in detail:

Kim Yu-na was flawless. Mao Asada was very good but not in the same league as Kim Yu-na, unfortunately.

Hope Mao Asada doesn't commit any violent acts against herself or others, but judging by the pissed off look on her face when she heard her score, along with her angry look on the podium, one can only wonder.

Lastly, the Japanese media can end their discussion on Mao Asada winning the gold, as her distant 2nd place finish speaks a little too loudly.

    Always a pleasure.

All true. Your comments are spot on.

We can safely say that much of Japan will be the property of the People's Republic of China within the next 10 years.

In 10-20 years, Japan will be a virtual island province of China.

Or, so the next sensational Japanese magazine headline will read.

It's the Japanese insular, provincial mentality that has led them to this.

Japanese have no one to blame but themselves.

Nah, these articles must be written or influenced by the PRC propagandists, to spread fear among the Japanese masses.

    Ahem.

Ando should caution that Japan is not always destined to remain in lowly 15th place at the Olympics.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/medals

I'm sure Japan will move up the ranks, but for an industrialized nation, 15th place is very sad.

Why is Japan's Olympic team sucking ass in Vancouver?

I just took a look at the latest medal count, and Japan is way down the list, at number 15. That's pretty sad for a 'developed' country.

In terms of asian countries, Japan is in 3rd place, behind South Korea and China.

Minus any geographic changes, by 2500 Japan will most definitely be an island province of China.

Like I said before, forget about rising GDPs or rising exports, etc, measures that Japan used to pride itself on. Just focus on being the best welfare state of the world.

Japan can set an example for the world on how it takes care of it's elderly.

Also read that China is now the largest exporter in the world, overtaking Germany. Not to forget that China will announce that it has overtaken Japan as the 2nd largest economy in the world, where does all this leave a nervous Japan?

    VoXMan,

Or, try to have the British govt at the time of the opium trading understand that their actions would have millions of Chinese addicted to the drug, thereby weakening their country to the point that the term for China was changed from the Middle Kingdom, to 'the sick man of asia'.

Your ridiculous analagy is like saying that the US should abolish the DEA and simply let all the heroin from Asia, and cocaine from South America flow freely for the sake of world trade.

    Tell that to your children.

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but I believe the British forcefully imported opium from India to China in the 1840's, which started the Opium War that China lost. And we all understand that this Shaikh was a British national, right?

JHansen, I can guarantee you that 1.4 billion Chinese believe that, in terms of this case, Chinese justice is certainly no joke.

    Ossan,

While it is true that the US does not recognize South Korean or Japanese sovereignty over the Dokdo islets, George Bush certainly backed the reinstatement of recognition of South Korean ownership in 2008:

'AHEAD of his Seoul visit next week, George W. Bush has made a US government agency reinstate recognition of South Korea's ownership of the Dokdo islets, the subject of an angry territorial dispute with Japan. "I asked (Secretary of State) Condi Rice to review it, and the database will be restored where it was seven days ago," Mr Bush told Korean, Thai and Chinese reporters at the White House.'

Folks, it's South Korean territory. Time to move on.

Ok. South Korean troops are stationed on the Dokdo islands right? No one disputes that.

The Japanese can bitch and moan about the islets being Japanese territory all they want. It doesn't matter much.

These islets are South Korean territory.

I was quite surprised to see the short stature of Akihito in comparison to Xi. It was like a professional basketball player shaking hands with a shriveled midget.

I guess from the smell of it, many Japanese feel that China is smacking around their emperor by dictating the time and place for when to meet. And from the viewpoint of the huge changes taking place in Asia (China set to surpass Japan as 2nd largest economy in the world), this bit of symbolism could have been done on purpose by the Chinese, to illustrate that point, in a subtle (or dramatic) way.

From this vantage point, Japanese people have every right to be sensitive, as their national pride has been rather publicly violated in their own backyard.

That being said, Japanese people should get over it and move on.
